dad 86 yrs in good health had CT scan found abdominal aorta aneurysm Dr says to scan in 3 mo very worried?

He had been in hospital in February from CT scan showing abdominal aorta inflammation – Shouldn’t we get second opinon? Do Medicare require a referral for specialist? I am so very worried and other than this my Dad is in great health. Are we sitting on a ticking time bomb? The technician that did the scan said this needed immediate attention. Who are we to believe?

Anyone knowing anthing about this type of problem or about Medicare and referrals, please respond. My Dad, my only Dad and I want him around a lot longer. 86 years old yes, but up Taking care of their house, property, on the go and healthy. One Doctor at Baylor in Dallas told my Dad ” you have probably another good 15 to 20 years” and I hope that is true.

I just don’t believe we need to take a chance. I believe we need to be educated and ask for a second opinion. Can anyone help?

We often watch a patient with an aortic aneurysm, if the aneurysm is not of a dangerous size. Until an AA gets to be 5 cm, it is watched to make sure it isn’t growing. Usually that is done with periodic ultrasounds. Many people live many years with a small AA which is not growing larger. I have one patient who we have been scanning for over 10 years, once a year to make sure the AA is stable. So, I guess if you knew the size, you would be better able to answer your own question. As far as I know, if your dad wasn’t sent to a specialist (vascular or thoracic surgeon), then I would bet his AA is under 5 cm. If that is the case, his primary care provider is well able to manage this.

I am not sure why the technologist said your dad needed immediate attention. I will say that sometimes the radiologist will ask us to tell the patient to go back to his doctor for consultation after a scan. Sometimes, we are the messenger for the radiologist, but most techs I know or have known will not, on their own, give out instructions such as that.

“Most aneurysms are small and slow growing and rarely rupture. Less commonly, aneurysms are larger and faster growing and are at higher risk of rupturing. Depending on the size and rate at which it is growing, treatment for aortic aneurysm may vary from watchful waiting to emergency surgery. Once an aortic aneurysm is identified, doctors will closely monitor it so that surgery can be planned if and when necessary.”
