Suggestions for helping an old guy heal from an injury?

We take care of a 34 Yr old QH who was a barrel racer in his prime. He has arthritis in his knees and this week developed a suspensory injury. The vets (2 came to see him) don’t think he has to be put down although his owner would have if necessary.

Sounds like you are doing a great job caring for this old fella. We used to use Absorbine diluted with water 1:1. This would be great for his knees. However I would not use it under the boots. May blister him. You may even make the dilution a bit stronger but not by much. Absorbine used straight constantly can blister horses that are sensitive to it. Much like what Ben Gay can do to people. Bute is good for the inflammation and pain and Corta Flex helps with cartilage, tendons, and bone. I believe it helps to lubricate those old joints. Keep doing what you are doing. Might want to keep this guy inside on cold miserable days or let him out for a little while. Avoid letting him lay on cold wet ground. Standing idle will cause him to stiffen up. So even if you hand walk him a few times a day it will help. Provide plenty of bedding and keep him off of hard surfaces such as pavement. Good luck and thanks for giving this old fella a chance.
