UAE Labor Law – cancelling visa?

i’ve quit my job due to health reasons, and my sponsor has my passport – I know I can get that back, but he’s refusing to cancel my visa, and is threatening to kick me out of the country unless i sign a paper saying i will not work in the same business in this city for 3 years. i don’t care since this is not my plan anyway, but for some reason he believes i will be his competition. and he won’t pay what he owes me for few months i worked. he refused to sign a real contract the 5 months i worked there. and i was also told that the automatic 6 months ban is now gone. what’s the truth here? what can i do?
after signing cancellation papers, how long does it actually take before it is really canceled and when can i get my passport back? i heard i have 20 days then i have to leave the country – if i can get visa on entry, can i just walk in and out of Oman to change to visit visa so i can enjoy my friends in UAE while i find job elsewhere?

I suggest for you to visit the Immigration and also the Labour Department to complain that your employer refused to issue you a contract and is withholding your passport. Both are illegal in UAE hence you have a good case in your hands.

Cancellation is actually a matter of days. Maximum 3 days. Once the cancellation is stamped, you can stay in UAE for only 30 days. I am not very familiar with Oman visa runs but you can do the same in Kish.

As far as I know the labour ban is still very much in effect although it can be countered with an offer of new sponsorship. As mentioned it is a labour ban. In this case, you can still apply for a visit visa. Just make sure though that an absconding case is not filed against you. You won’t be able to get a visit visa if that is the case.
