Quite frankly, many people would really wonder why it is important to know about surgical tape. After all, the doctor or nurse who cares for you really does all the work with the tape anyway. Though that is true, some people have problems with different kinds of tape. Here are the most important things you should know about it.

It took quite some time for the general public to know that some tapes cause problems for people. But now, people are quite aware that they have allergies to particular kinds. For these sensitive individuals, they must avoid certain tapes completely.

There are many different kinds of tape. Some white ones actually contain zinc oxide, which helps to battle infections. Some are very porous to allow air to touch the skin. Some are more like open mesh. What is used really depends upon the injury or surgery being bandaged. More importantly, hypoallergenic versions have become more common, because tape can cause skin reactions such as rashes or redness.

Some tapes are made from plastics, some from cloth, and others are made from paper. Patients who rash from plastic should ask for paper tape instead. And some patients with very soft skin need to avoid plastic tape because it can pull the skin painfully. The plastic sticks firmly, but may pull off skin in some cases.

Luckily, medical tapes come in a variety of widths and composition. More paper tapes are commonly available than ever before. Some medical professionals will use a combination of tapes to bandage surgical wounds. They may cover the affected area, tape with paper tape where the bandages touch the skin, and then tape over the entire bandage with plastic or cloth tape.

Now it is possible to purchase a wide variety of medical tapes online. There are many suppliers offering different tape options. Clear, or transparent versions are found in both plastic and paper tapes. Cloth tapes are usually white or beige.

Some families will purchase medical tapes and gauze in anticipation of the cuts and bruises of active family life. It can be much cheaper to buy these tapes in bulk. And it can be comforting to know that the tape you prefer is stocked in your home if you need it.
