Johnson, founder of K Records and the former leader of Beat Happening, formed a band with K artist Jason Anderson and members of other bands associated with the label to record a collection of his own material as well as songs written and recorded by K acts like the Halo Benders and Johnson’s own Dub Narcotic Sound System. The increased instrumental proficiency perhaps obscures the ramshackle charms of early K releases, but the album showcases what an underrated singer and songwriter Johnson is and has always been.

Judah Johnson (EP) $7.99 The self-titled debut EP from the Michigan quintet Judah Johnson finds the group engaging in patient, sterile-sounding glacial sweeps. While the band has a gift for melodic invention — parts of “Tongue Kiss on Ecuador” stand out as particularly striking — the songs are too fragmented and filtered, perhaps intentionally, to have much of an impact. The song structures are non-linear, not because it seems the music needs it, but because it seems the thing to do. In the subsequent Radiohead and Elliot Smith-influenced pastiche, the band has a hard time finding alternative methods of framing. Part of this stems from the earnestly low-mixed vocals of primary songwriter Daniel Johnson, whose singing-to-his-feet vocal approach loses its charm on record. Lyrically, he seems quite strong, offering complicated emotional tone poems. Unfortunately, it is almost universally impossible to hear what he is saying. ~ Jesse Jarnow

The Complete Syl Johnson on Hi Records $22.99 Syl Johnson started out his career on the blues side of things, working with Howlin’ Wolf, Junior Wells, Magic Sam and others, but his biggest successes have come as a soul singer, first for Peter Wright’s TwiNight label (originally TwiLight Records, it became TwiNight when it was discovered that another label already owned the Twilight name) in the late 1960s, and then with Hi Records in the early- to mid-’70s. Working with the venerable producer Willie Mitchell and the unbeatable Hi rhythm section, Johnson put out four albums for the label, all of which are included here on this double-disc set, The Complete Syl Johnson on Hi Records, along with a handful of bonus tracks. Singing at the upper end of his range, Johnson sounds a bit (well, actually, a lot) like a poor man’s Al Green, his labelmate at Hi, working the same smooth, sensual shuffle that Mitchell seemed to be able to pull effortlessly from the air. There’s a lot to like here, including the sexy “Feelin’ Frisky,” the wonderfully sincere “I Want to Take You Home (To See Mama),” the hard-hitting “Stuck in Chicago,” the goofy (but winning) “I Hear the Love Chimes,” and Johnson’s biggest hit with Hi, a version of Al Green’s “Take Me to the River,” which peaked at number seven on the R&B charts in 1975. The comparisons to Green are inevitable, but Johnson holds his own, sounding a bit more ragged and rough, although not as rough as he got on his earlier TwiNight sides, where he sounded at times like a stressed-out James Brown (not at all a bad thing, really). Critics are divided on which version of Johnson is better, the funkier TwiNight version or the smooth, soulful Hi version, but with this two-disc set and the single disc Twilight & Twinight on Collectables, you can have both and skip the argument altogether. ~ Steve Leggett

Johnson County War - $8.99 The backdrop for this epic Western, which aired in August 2002 on the Hallmark Channel, will be familiar to fans of the genre and students of Western history. The Johnson County War took place in northern Wyoming in April 1892, growing out of the familiar story of big-money ranchers who suspected homesteader neighbors of rustling. Screenwriters Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana adapted Frederick Manfred’s 1957 novel, Riders of Judgment, which used some of the events and people but changed the names, including the county (which becomes Bighorn) and the main town (from Buffalo to Antelope). Michael Cimino’s Heaven’s Gate (1981) also employed elements of the Johnson County War in its story. Manfred’s book and this film center on Cain Hammett (Tom Berenger), a lonesome cowboy who hankers for Rory (Michelle Forbes); she has married his younger brother Dale (Adam Storke) in spite of the fact that she really loves Cain. A third Hammett brother, Harry (Luke Perry), unlike his honest, homesteading siblings, is a rustler who runs afoul of Marshal Hunt Lawton (Burt Reynolds), who is in the employ of wealthy Lord Peter (Christopher Cazenove), an Englishman in cahoots with the owners of big ranches to exterminate all of the homesteaders, guilty or innocent.
