Rosewood & Steel $14.99 Not quite as strong as it predecessor but definitely worth hearing, Rosewood & Steel has Flower putting her own special spin on music by Junior Parker (“Mystery Train”), Charlie Patton (“Pony Blues”), Skip James (“Cypress Grove Blues”), and Brooks Berry (“Can’t Sleep For Dreaming”), along with a bunch of originals. Geoff Muldaur, Amos Garrett, Steve James, and Paul Geremia all contribute to various songs. Flower’s singing is rich and husky, and her originals exploit the various sides of her musical personality, from playful to dark and moody (check out “Cock-A-Doodle Blues” and “Two Days Straight”), and all but one slots in perfectly with the covers on this collection. Her “Midnite Blue” vaguely recalls CSN’s “4+20,” with some gorgeous slide by Steve James, while she impresses and then some with her lap steel playing on the delightful “Roll On, Mississippi, Roll On” and Patton’s searing “Pony Blues” (which also features Geremia’s slide). The real surprise is “Mystery Train,” which gets about the slowest, most lyrical treatment ever on record here. ~ Bruce Eder |

Steel – Widescreen $14.99 Low-rent, poorly-lit superhero action is the order of the day in this film from television director Kenneth Johnson — who makes several references to his series Alien Nation throughout the course of the movie. NBA basketball superstar Shaquille O’Neal stars as John Henry Irons, a weapons designer and metallurgical genius who is developing a new sonic weapon for the military with the help of Sparks (Annabeth Gish), a computer whiz. When an accident caused by unscrupulous superior Nathaniel Burke (Judd Nelson) leaves Sparks paralyzed, Irons quits his job in disgust. It turns out later that Burke has begun mass-producing the weapon and selling it to terrorists and L.A. street gangs, so Irons and Sparks team up with Uncle Joe (Richard Roundtree), a junkyard artist, to create a suit of armor and a gadget-packed sledgehammer. Irons dons the suit and becomes known as the superhero Steel, who kicks criminal posterior all over the city with his impenetrable get-up and high-tech gizmos. Before long, Burke’s comeuppance is in the offing. The Steel Claw - $5.99 George Montgomery directs, stars, and co-scripts this routine, somewhat dated wartime drama set in the Philippines during World War II. Capt. John Larsen (Montgomery) has to go behind enemy lines at the beginning of the war to rescue a general from Japanese captivity. Instead of breezing through the assignment, Larsen discovers that the general has died, and it is almost impossible to get back to his rendezvous point. Filipino guerrillas help him out, but then he is handicapped by an injured woman in need of medical attention. The “steel claw” of the title is a hook that the one-handed Larsen fastens onto himself, a prosthetic straight out of Peter Pan. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi |

Blue Steel - $5.99 John Wayne once again goes undercover to catch a wanted outlaw in this average entry in his 1934-1935 Western series for Monogram Pictures. Wayne plays John Carruthers, a U.S. marshal, and his quarry is the Polka Dot Bandit, aka Danti (Yakima Canutt), who has taken off with a 4,000-dollar pay roll. As John soon learns, Danti is in the employ of Malgrove (Edward Peil Sr.), a supposedly upstanding citizen who is secretly trying to starve the good people of Yucca City. Unbeknownst to the townsfolk, a valuable ore runs right through the area and Malgrove is plotting to buy the land on the cheap. Silk and Steel $54.99 Released back when there was always two sides to every audio story (i.e., side one and side two), Giuffria’s second offering houses an interesting concept: polarizing the huffy from the heavy. This is hardly a revolutionary idea, as such was the common format of most AOR at the time, and perhaps for the sake of balance some silk slips into the steel and vice versa, so the record ultimately ends up heavy on the light. The titular titan’s bombastic keyboards float like angel feathers amongst David Glen Eisley’s lung-busting vocals (Eisley even scats with axeman Lanny Cordola right out of the gate on “No Escape”). The saccharine sweetness of “Love You Forever” and “Girl” isn’t sticky enough and makes your teeth hurt, but brief radio-ringer “I Must Be Dreaming” reveals a lovely, plaintive reverie, forerunner to White Lion’s wimpy winner “Little Fighter” and arguably even better than the debut’s “Call to the Heart” (Giuffria’s shining moment on the charts). Silk closer “Change of Heart” mentions “Heart on the Line,” a Rick Nielsen number the band covered as House of Lords on Sahara. Obviously these poodle poppers want the airwaves, as demonstrated on the radical “Radio” and through the production gloss of Pat Glasser, the secret of Night Ranger’s success. The best steel moment, “Lethal Lover,” naturally rules and quotes Journey’s “Edge of the Blade” and “Hocus Pocus” by Focus. The slippery-when-wet “Dirty Little Secret” isn’t as raunchy as Y&T should be, but boasts some fine playing. Giuffria’s whooping keys retain their grandiose uniqueness, and the electric drums are antiquated but not annoying, ditto the blazing fretwork (a dependable hair staple) from Cordola. Honestly, though, except for one jewel on each side, these dudes can’t touch Steve Perry and company. The European reissue includes a bonus, “Say It ain’t True.” Sinister genius Gene Simmons forced the band to change their name and vocalist to become House of Lords. ~ Doug Stone |

Sacred Steel – Collector’s $19.99 In most traditional houses of worship, an organ or a piano is used to provide the music for Sunday services, but that isn’t the case in the Jewel Dominion and Keith Dominion churches of the African-American House of God/Holiness-Pentecostal denomination. In the 1930s, prompted by a passage in Psalms that urged parishioners to “praise Him with stringed instruments,” a Keith Dominion congregation in Florida replaced their organist with a steel guitar player, and the practice spread to other Florida churches. Gospel steel guitar was all but unknown outside of Florida until 1997, when a musicologist compiled recordings of a number of Keith and Jewel Dominion musicians into an album called Sacred Steel, which quickly became one of the most acclaimed historical releases of the decade. Sacred Steel is a documentary which looks at the history of this little-known musical movement and features inspiring performances filmed at both concert halls and churches of the finest sacred steel players letting the Holy Spirit speak through their music.
