What is Korean Ginseng?

Korean ginseng is often also known as Chinese ginseng and is probably one of the most widely used and acclaimed herbs available. It comes in a couple of varieties and you will often hear them referred to as white or red ginseng. The plant grows on moist shaded mountainsides in Korea, China and Russia and is a perennial herb. It has dark green leaves and red berries and can grow to a height of 2 ft (60cm) or more. The root is the part that is used for medicinal purposes and is very slender and some even say if has similarities to the human body in appearance.

How to use Korean Ginseng

You can get Korean ginseng from your health food store in a variety of different ways. Depending on where you look you will be able to find it as whole root, powder, liquid extracts and teas. You may also be able to get powder capsules as well and you should take them as indicated on the packet. Many herbal teas that you find in your local supermarket will also contain ginseng. If you are going to take the herb it is recommended that for each week taken you should have a few days away from the herb.

If you would like to make a tea you can do this will the whole root. You should slice it up using about 1 to 5 grams and cover with water. Bring to the boil and allow to boil for 10 minutes of more, then strain and flavour with honey to taste. Many experts say that you should not use metal pots as that can affect the antioxidant properties of the herb.

Uses of Korean Ginseng

Korean ginseng is a widely used herb and has a large number of benefits. As a result a lot of research has been carried out on it to determine the medical benefits. It is thought that Korean ginseng can help a person to deal with stress and bring themselves back into balance. It is often used as a herb for general health and many Chinese herbalists will recommend it for the weak or elderly. It has also been associated with memory improvement and so could be very useful for people suffering from dementia. It is also a great tonic for those who suffer from exhaustion or chronic illness.

Some studies have also shown that it has anti-fatigue abilities and so can be very useful for people who are suffering from things like chronic fatigue syndrome. In addition studies on animals have shown that it can help lower blood sugar by facilitating the release of insulin which could make it useful for diabetics. Other studies have shown that it has anticancer properties and also that it can be useful for people suffering from AIDS. In addition it is thought to help with cholesterol reduction as well as impotence.

Side Effects and Precautions

There are a number of different types of ginseng so it is important to do your research and get the one that is best for you. Korean ginseng is not recommended for people suffering from ulcers, high blood pressure, tension headaches, nervousness, mental imbalance, inflammation, fever and symptoms associated with high levels of stress. It is also not recommended for pregnant or lactating women as well as women of child bearing age. It is better for the elderly and weak and often not given to young people.

The side effects are usually mild but some people can suffer from overstimulation, irritability, nervousness, and insomnia. If you take too much ginseng or do not have a break it can cause things like headaches, insomnia, seeing spots, dizziness, shortage of breath and gastrointestinal discomfort. Long term use can cause menstrual abnormalities and breast tenderness in some women.

In terms of interactions you should seek medical advice it you are using hormonal drugs before taking ginseng. In addition as it is a stimulant you should not take ginseng with caffeine as this can cause over stimulation.

Originally released as 2 separate LPs.When it comes to smothering a recording with over-production or being much too slick for his own good, keyboardist Bob James is an expert. In the 1970s, James lent his “expertise” to Eric Gale’s albums Ginseng Woman and Multiplication (which were united on a single CD in 1991). To be sure, James’ arranging is excessive. But the damage isn’t as severe as one might imagine, and the ubiquitous jazz/R&B/pop guitarist actually has enough room to stretch out at times — as does Grover Washington, Jr. (tenor sax). Far from exceptional but generally decent and enjoyable, these albums make it clear that Gale could be a very appealing and tasteful soloist when given room to breathe. ~ Alex Henderson

Riding the trend of Korean action blockbusters after the phenomenally popular Swiri, Park Chan Wook directs this murder mystery thriller about death on the DMZ. The film opens with a shooting along the heavy militarized border between North and South Korea, which leaves a North Korean soldier (Shin Ha- Kyun) dead and a South Korean soldier injured. Hoping to reduce the potentially explosive political fallout by solving the crime quickly, both countries agree to an investigator of Korean-Swiss descent named Sophie Jean (Lee Yeong-Ae). As she methodically sifts through the evidence, Sophie learns that the testimony of two other soldiers — North Korean Oh Kyeong Pil (Song Kang-Ho) and South Korean Lee Soo Hyeok (Lee Byung-Hun) — are completely contradictory. Another witness (Kim Tae-Woo) tries to commit suicide rather than divulge information. Sophie soon concludes that a group of guards from the North and South, after years of eyeing each other, started meeting in the North Korean guard house to chat, fawn over porn, and to play cards. Why this informal d?tente dissolved into bloodshed is a thornier question. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

Korean filmmaker Gina Kim directed this erotic drama about a woman’s dangerous response to her husband’s fertility issues. The Departed’s Vera Farmiga stars as Sophie, an American woman married to Korean-American Andrew (David McInnis). When Andrew’s inability to impregnate Sophie leads him to attempt suicide, Sophie seeks the help of a fertility clinic, but is turned away. Desperate to save her marriage, she begins paying Korean immigrant Jihah (Ha Jung-woo) for sex, in hopes that she’ll become pregnant and Andrew will be none the wiser. As on might expect, though, the relationship between Sophie and Jihah evolves into something more than either bargained for. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

The King and the Clown - Subtitle

The King and the Clown – Subtitle

$19.99

South Korean director Lee Joon-ik’s feature The King and the Clown has the double distinction of being the highest-grossing film in Korean history at the time of its release and one of the first Korean commercial films to deal openly and unabashedly with gay themes; it is regarded in many quarters as “the Korean Brokeback Mountain.” Adapted from Kim Tae-Woong’s play Yi, this period drama concerns two 16th century, Chosun Era clowns: the supremely self-assured Jang-seng (Kam Woo-seong) and transsexual Gong-gil (Lee Jun-gi), who earn a meager living as street performers in Hanyang. Miraculously, their excruciating poverty comes to an end when the tyrannical King Yon-san (Jeong Jin-yeong) catches their act and, delighted, invites them to serve as resident court jesters at his palace. But matters grow increasingly complex and tricky when Yon-san feels a torrent of lust for Gong-gil and attempts to possess the androgynous performer. This elicits unbridled jealousy from Jang-seng and not only sets him on a head-to-head collision course with the king, but threatens to propel Yon-san into full insanity. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

This film marks the big-screen debut of Robert Redford. Sydney Pollack, who would collaborate with Redford on future film projects, plays the role of Sergeant Van Horn. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

Martial-arts pro Jeong Du-hong stars as Jeong Tae-su in notorious Korean action director Ryoo Seung-wan’s The City of Violence (aka Jakpae). A former punk and brawler-turned-police detective, Tae-su returns to his hometown for the funeral of a buddy, Wang-jae (Ahn Gil-gang). Once there, he reconnects with members of the “old gang,” including the tough but loyal fighter Ryoo Seok-hwan (played by the director) and the gang leader, Jang Pil-ho. Tae-su suspects foul play in Wang-jae’s death, and instinctively ties it to Pil-ho, now a scuzzy slimeball with a massive inferiority complex and hordes of armed men. His instincts, it seems, are correct — Pil-ho indeed had Wang-jae rubbed out. Thus, Tae-su and Seok-hwan ultimately take on Pil-ho at an abandoned Korean restaurant, fighting myriads of his henchmen with bare knuckles, blades, and Korean martial arts, and accompanied by a rousing Leone-style score. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Korea’s leading filmmaker, Kang Je-gyu, directed this epic-scale drama focusing on two brothers caught up in the madness of the war that tore their nation apart in the early ’50s. Jin-seok Lee (Weon Bin) is a bright and well-educated young man whose older and more physically imposing brother Jin-tae Lee (Jang Dong-gun) believes he represents the best hope for his family’s future. When both Jin-seok and Jin-tae are called up to fight in the South Korean army following the advance of Communist forces, a wary Jin-tae cuts a deal with his commanding officer — if he racks up an impressive enough record on the battlefield, the army will give Jin-seok an early release. Jin-tae proves to be a fearless soldier, and is soon recognized as a war hero, but as the conflict wears on, he develops an unhealthy enthusiasm for the violence of the battlefield, and Jin-seok finds himself questioning his big brother’s actions, both as a soldier and as a member of his family. The title Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War refers to the Korean name for the South Korean flag, originally designed in 1876 but outlawed during Japanese rule of the nation, and restored to use in 1948. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

South Korean filmmaker Kim Ji-hun collaborates with screenwriter Park Sang-yon for this drama set during a tragic day in Korean history. It was a calm spring morning in 1980 when South Korean troops were ordered onto planes for immediate deployment. Most of the soldiers assumed that they would finally be confronting their enemies to the north, though soon after takeoff they realized they were heading south. Meanwhile, down on the streets of Gwangju, political tensions are running high in the wake of General Chun Doo-hwan’s recent military coup. Min-woo and his family are going about their daily business as usual, blissfully unaware that their lives will soon be changed forever. As the military planes land, scores of soldiers flood out on a mission to suppress the student uprising. Their use of force is both excessive and indiscriminate, gunning down students and average citizens alike. As the violence escalates over the course of the next few days, the frightened citizens band together to form a militia. Gwangju is about to explode, and Min-woo is standing directly in the eye of the storm. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

To filmmaker and war veteran Samuel Fuller, war is about survival. You either kill or be killed. His combat films are not about politics, adventure, or home. They are about killing and staying alive. Fixed Bayonets, Fuller’s second study of the Korean War, focuses on a neophyte corporal, Denno (Richard Basehart), who is afraid to take a life. When his division is forced down Korea’s snowbound mountains, Denno’s unit stays behind to cover its retreat. Entrenched in an icy cave, Denno watches his superiors get picked off one by one until he must take command. He soon learns of what he is truly capable and what he will do to survive: Denno learns to kill. Filmed and released during the Korean War, Fixed Bayonets offered audiences no respite from the harrowing, difficult combat. It also introduced a new arena into modern American combat films — freezing, icy terrain. The actors were so unaccustomed to the ice (that Fuller had actually frozen onto the set), that several men injured themselves within the first week of shooting. Many of the wounded in the film are simply ailing performers who Fuller kept on set so they could still receive their paychecks! ~ Aubry Anne D’Arminio, Rovi

South Korean-born filmmaker Yu-Jin Kim (A Promise) takes the helm for this epic historical war drama detailing the invention of the first multi-launch rocket system. Created during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), the revolutionary weapons system forever changed the face of combat by allowing armies to rain destruction down on their enemies with unprecedented ferocity. A century after the Sino-Korean conflict, China has grown increasingly hostile in its efforts to reign in the affairs of its small tributary state. As a result, Joseon King Sejong (Ahn Seong-gi) strives to protect his country’s autonomy by allocating secret funding for the development of a highly sophisticated weapon. This responsibility is bestowed upon sleazy merchant Seol-ju (Jeong Jae-yeong), the son of a gunpowder maker from the fallen Goryeo Kingdom (918-1392). Not only does the merchant’s lowly status make him the ideal candidate to head-up such a top-secret project, but his knowledge of explosives provides him with the knowledge to create a weapon that’s capable of flying up to two kilometers and creating a crater up to thirty centimeters deep. When the Chinese government becomes suspicious and the original weapons designer takes his own life, his young daughter Hong-ri (Han Eung-jeong) is faced with the task of guarding a volatile national secret. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This laughable Korean rip-off of King Kong was released the same year as Dino De Laurentis’s trumpeted remake to sponge up some free hype from that film’s massive publicity machine (in some areas it was retitled The New King Kong). Despite the fact that the poorly-handled big-studio film was considered by many to be a pointless exercise, this movie makes De Laurentis’ fiasco seem positively inspired by comparison (although the producers of this film might merit some slack — they didn’t have $20 million to blow). The vaguely familiar story involves a captured 36-foot ape who escapes his offshore prison to rampage through the streets of Seoul, where he falls in love with an American actress (Joanna Kerns) who is shooting a movie there. Jam-packed with laughs, both intentional (the big brute gives Korean defense forces the finger) and unintentional (look for the “Tonka” logo on the trucks he hurls through the air), this might have found a home among fans of truly awful cinema thanks to an effective use of 3-D, but TV and video versions are missing this clunker’s sole bonus. Released under several alternate titles, the most appropriate being Attack of the Giant Horny Gorilla! ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

A would-be North Korean defector still reeling over the killing of his family by the communist government when he was just a child determines to destroy the Korean peninsula in a tense, politically minded action thriller directed by Kwak Kyung-taek and starring Jang Dong-gun, Lee Jung-jae, and Lee Mi-yeon. When a vessel sailing a few hundred kilometers off the northeast port of Jt Long in Taiwan is hijacked by pirates and the National Intelligence Service learns that a nuclear guidance kit has been stolen, they quickly dispatch naval lieutenant Kang, Se-jong (Lee Jung-jae) to find out who was responsible for the deed and to bring him to justice. The criminal mastermind in question is Sin (Jang Dong-gun), a man who harbors a deep-rooted hatred for the Korean government due to a tragic event that took place in his childhood. As a young boy, Sin’s family had tried to defect to South Korea. When they were turned away by a government who feared complicating their relationship with China, however, Sin watched as his parents were brutally executed and his only sister, Choi, Myung-ju (Lee Mi-yeon), was taken away. Upon learning that Sin currently resides in Russia, Lieutenant Kang travels to the Eastern European republic as the tragedy of Sin’s past slowly comes into focus for the sympathetic military man. His mission to apprehend Sin is clear, though, and despite his personal feelings Lieutenant Kang remains determined to get his man by any means necessary. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Having previously focused his attentions on films about the experiences of Koreans in contemporary Japan, Korean-Japanese filmmaker Yoichi Sai reverts to the Korean reading of his name (Choi Yang-Il for this moody underworld thriller about a mysterious loner in search of his long-lost twin. Adapted from the popular Korean manga of the same name, Soo follows the journey of a wanted man named Tae-Soo, who has spent nineteen years attempting to locate his missing sibling Tae-Jin. Tae-Jin was snatched away when they were just young boys, yet Tae-Soo is convinced that his brother is still alive almost two decades later. Pursued by both the police and the most dangerous gangs in Korea, Tae-Soo does ultimately manage to find Tae-Jin, though the moment they are reunited Tae-Jin is suddenly killed. In the aftermath of Tae-Jin’s death, Tae-Soo assumes his identity in hopes of tracking down the killer. The fact that Tae-Jin was a policeman doesn’t make pulling off such an elaborate ruse very easy, though Tae-Soo does manage to play the part long enough to access his brother’s police files and discern that Tae-Jin’s kidnapper and killer are one in the same. Now, as Tae-Jin embarks on a quest for revenge that takes him directly to the top of the gangland hierarchy, the resulting violence plays out with all the power of a Greek tragedy. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

I Was an American Spy is a true story, based on a series of autobiographical Reader’s Digest articles written by Claire Phillips. Ann Dvorak stars as Ms. Phillips, an American nightclub singer trapped in Singapore when the Japanese march in. Having lost her husband to the Bataan death march, Phillips agrees to join an American secret agent (Gene Evans) in undermining the Japanese occupation troops. She is captured by the enemy, tortured, and sentenced to be shot, but is rescued at the last minute by her American contact. I Was an American Spy handles its more brutal scenes with a marked degree of tastefulness, thanks to the careful direction of Lesley Selander. Just as in their wartime movie appearances, Chinese actor Richard Loo and Korean actor Philip Ahn are eminently hissable as the Japanese villains. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
