Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events - $34.99 The best-selling series of subversive children’s books from author Lemony Snicket (aka Daniel Handler) come to the screen in this black comedy for the whole family (and how often do you get to see one of those?). The Baudelaire siblings — gadget freak Violet (Emily Browning), bookworm Klaus (Liam Aiken), and baby Sunny (Kara Hoffman and Shelby Hoffman) — were living a fairy-tale existence with their parents until they died in a fire that destroyed the family home. With few close relatives and a large fortune the children won’t inherit until they reach adulthood, the Baudelaire children are left in the care of the peculiar Count Olaf (Jim Carrey), an out-of-work actor who would love nothing more than to get his hands on the kids’ money. It doesn’t take long for the children to figure out that Count Olaf is up to no good, and they try to steer clear of his various murderous schemes with the help of wildly paranoid Aunt Josephine (Meryl Streep) and snake-fancying Uncle Monty (Billy Connolly). Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events also features Catherine O’Hara, Timothy Spall, Cedric the Entertainer, and Luis Guzman; Jude Law narrates in the guise of author Snicket. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Damaged Care - $24.99 Damaged Care is fact-based drama about the managed care industry. It originally aired on Showtime. Laura Dern co-produced and stars in the film as Dr. Linda Peeno, who gives up her career after earning a medical degree, so that she can take care of her family. Her husband, Doug (James LeGros), is a successful OB/GYN. In 1987, when their children (from previous marriages) have gotten a little older, Linda decides to return to work, and gets a job as a medical reviewer at Humana Health Care. Patient claims that aren’t approved by the UR (utilization review) nurses are forwarded to the doctors on the medical review team, who, Linda learns, are expected to rubber-stamp the UR nurses’ decisions. Every decision Linda makes to cover a patient’s care is questioned, sometimes angrily. The head of the UR department, Cheryl Griffith (Regina King) befriends Linda, and shares her unhappiness with the system. Linda has a crisis of conscience when she gets a call about an emergency heart transplant that needs immediate approval. Pressured by the company, she finds an out in the employer’s healthcare booklet, and denies the claim. The patient dies. Eventually, Linda quits Humana (angering Doug), and Cheryl gets her a job at a smaller, non-profit company, Brothers Managed Care. The system is pretty much the same, though, and Linda comes into conflict with the cost-conscious head of the UR nurses, Gemma Coombs (Michelle Clunie). When a nurse (Suki Kaiser) is stricken with a series of crippling strokes, Linda takes a stand against the company to get her the treatment she needs. Eventually, Dr. Linda Peeno gets out of the system, and becomes an outspoken critic of the abuses of the health care industry. Dern’s mother, Diane Ladd, and Adam Arkin also appear in the film. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi |

Looking for Lincoln - $19.99 This documentary takes an in-depth look at legendary president Abraham Lincoln, examining the story behind his historic presidency, with controversial issues of race, religion, and civil rights surrounding him from the moment he entered public life. Sometimes prone to depression, Lincoln ascended to the most powerful position in America through many complex avenues involving both egalitarianism and ambition, revealing that the man’s mythic image in historic memory has often been left incomplete. ~ Cammila Albertson, Rovi |

Our Version of Events $20.99 In 2012, Brit’s Critic Choice Award, a best new artist prize for the United Kingdom’s best talent, unsurprisingly went to Emeli Sand?, a woman being lauded for her crystalline voice and her immaculate songwriting skills. By the time her debut album, Our Version of Events, hit shelves, Sand? had already been a number one-selling singer and songwriter, and had her work covered by names such as Tinchy Stryder, Alesha Dixon, and Susan Boyle. Many call the 24-year old starlet a jack-of-all-trades, and after listening to her first full-length debut, it’s easy to understand why. Events skip from genre to genre breezily, often being carried by Sand?’s piercing voice. Sonically, the album sounds like a whisked-blend of Leona Lewis, Kate Bush, and Alicia Keys — but, somehow, Sand? still establishes her own style between the airy coos, sultry piano melodies, and sprinkling of xylophones, synths, and bells. Sand?’s strongest tracks are such a mixed-bag — the Professor Green-spinoff “Read All About It (Part III)” is a raw interpretation of the massive pop single, “Lifetime” is a midtempo love song that’s as engaging as a close listen as it is late at night, and the electrifying first single “Heaven” has all the makings of a vibrant dance record slicked up for the floor. A true feature of this album is the sheer quality of the compositions, which, for lack of a better term, are unexpectedly sophisticated and nuanced for a mainstream record. What holds the album back in parts is the fact that its tempo is too slow at times, however, Sand? makes up for it with passion and precision. Our Version of Events is an earnest collection of works by a woman who is as good a composer as she is vocalist, a lethal combination in today’s pop music business. In this case, the Critic’s Choice Award was well deserved. ~ Matthew Chisling |

A Dramatic Turn of Events $47.99 A Dramatic Turn of Events, the 11th studio long player from progressive hard rock act Dream Theater, is understandably among the most anticipated in their decades-long career. Founding drummer Mike Portnoy — long considered, with guitarist John Petrucci, to be DT — left the band and was replaced with veteran Mike Mangini. This is the set that answers the question about his impact on their sound. Interestingly enough, it’s not that much. Mangini is as much a complex, intricate drummer as Portnoy was, though he is more an ensemble player; he plays more on the beat than behind it. A Dramatic Turn of Events is a much more keyboard-driven offering, though there is plenty of good old-fashioned prog metal here, too. Given its nearly 80-minute length, there is something here for virtually every fan — or detractor — to grab hold of. Singer James LaBrie doesn’t indulge his high metal screech here that often, and prefers to sing plainly — a good thing. Three tracks — “Outcry,” “Breaking All Illusions,” and “Lost Not Forgotten” — feature wildly long instrumental segments with more odd time signature changes than you can likely count. The latter of these sounds almost like Meshuggah with keyboards and stacked with multi-part harmonic vocals. Opening track and single “On the Backs of Angels” contains all the DT trademarks: disciplined drumming, intricate seven-string guitar riffs that grow increasingly more explosive, a Gothic chorale, and John Myung’s insistent basslines, which are nearly buried in the mix. Jordan Rudess’ keyboards counter Petrucci’s guitar and Mangini’s drums for dominance and come out on top. That said, the melodic structure of the tune harkens back to DT albums previous to the last decade’s. As melodic as it is, it’s almost knotty compared to the sheer melodicism of “Build Me Up, Break Me Down” that follows it. One does have to wonder about the inclusion of the ballads “Far from Heaven” and the string-laden “Beneath the Surface,” which have clunky, trite lyrics, sappy instrumentation, and feel like filler; it would have been better to have trimmed them to keep the album a reasonable length. In sum, a Dramatic Turn of Events, while not a perfect offering, has enough of what makes Dream Theater attractive to make it a necessary purchase for fans. ~ Thom Jurek |

Abraham Lincoln - $12.99 To date, this D.W. Griffith epic is the only talking-picture effort to encapsulate the entire life of Abraham Lincoln, from cradle to grave. The script, credited to Stephen Vincent Benet, manages to include all the familiar high points, including Lincoln’s tragic romance with Ann Rutledge (Una Merkel, allegedly cast because of her resemblance to Griffith favorite Lillian Gish), his lawyer days in Illinois, his contentious marriage to Mary Todd (Kay Hammond), his heartbreaking decision to declare war upon the South, his pardoning of a condemned sentry during the Civil War, and his assassination at the hands of John Wilkes Booth (expansively portrayed by Ian Keith). This was D.W. Griffith’s first talkie, and the master does his best with the somewhat pedantic dialogue sequences; but as always, Griffith’s forte was spectacle and montage, as witness the cross-cut scenes of Yankees and Rebels marching off to war and the pulse-pounding ride of General Sheridan (Frank Campeau) through the Shenandoah Valley. Thanks to the wizardry of production designer William Cameron Menzies, many of the scenes appear far more elaborate than they really were; Menzies can also be credited with the unforgettable finale, as Honest Abe’s Kentucky log cabin dissolves to the Lincoln Memorial. As Abraham Lincoln, Walter Huston is a tower of strength, making even the most florid of speeches sound human and credible; only during the protracted death scene of Ann Rutledge does Huston falter, and then the fault is as much Griffith’s as his. Road-shown at nearly two hours (including a prologue showing slaves being brought to America), Abraham Lincoln was pared down to 97 minutes by United Artists, and in that length it proved a box-office success, boding well for D.W. Griffith’s future in talkies (alas, it proved to be his next-to-last film; Griffith’s final effort, The Struggle was a financial disaster). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Gore Vidal’s Lincoln - $5.99 Originally telecast in two parts on March 27 and 28 of 1988, Lincoln was adapted from the bestselling “factual fiction” by Gore Vidal. Sam Waterston stars as Abraham Lincoln, with Mary Tyler Moore frighteningly convincing as the tragic Mary Todd Lincoln. Predictably, Part One of Lincoln deals with the inauguration, the outbreak of War, and the president’s tiltings with his cabinet, while Part Two includes the Emancipation Proclamation, the appointment of General Grant (James Gammon), and the assassination. The throughline of the script is the deteriorating mental condition of Mary Lincoln, not to mention her injurious impulsiveness: at one point, Honest Abe must cover up the fact that Mary has stolen a copy of his inaugural speech and sold it. Evidently, the name of Gore Vidal was not considered enough of a drawing card by the NBC publicists, who insisted upon advertising Lincoln as the second coming of Gone With the Wind, adding the teaser tagline “The Untold Story.” ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Young Mr. Lincoln - $34.99 John Ford’s fine direction distinguishes this highly fictionalized account of the early life of Abraham Lincoln. The film shows Lincoln (Henry Fonda) as he rises from a country boy born in a log cabin to a lawyer in Springfield, Illinois defending two young men unjustly accused of murder. The film, produced by Darryl F. Zanuck, received an Academy Award nomination for “Best Original Screenplay” for its screenwriter Lamar Trotti. Henry Fonda perhaps the most American of actors, is at his best playing Lincoln as the quintessential, compassionate American hero. ~ Linda Rasmussen, Rovi |

Lincoln: The Untold Stories - $19.99 One of the most popular and respected presidents in the history of the United States of America, President Abraham Lincoln remains a mystery to even the most dedicated historians. In this documentary, the filmmakers at The History Channel unearth the transcriptions of Lincoln’s official biographer William Herndon in order to shed some much-needed light on the fallen-president’s mystery-shrouded past. Shortly after the president was assassinated, Herndon began conducting interviews with over 250 of Lincoln’s closest friends and family members in a quest that would ultimately stretch three decades. During that time, Herndon was able to gather a comprehensive view of the man who shaped America. Now, for the very first time, Herndon’s tireless research is revealed to the public in a film that aims to finally resole the mystery of Lincoln’s formative years. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

The mare owned by young Jim Rabb (Ryan Merriman) of the First Michigan Cavalry gives birth to a colt, which battle-weary Sgt. Longacre (Steve Bacic) orders Jim to shoot so as not to slow down the other soldiers in the unit. Jim refuses to do so, risking severe disciplinary action. As it turns out, the Confederates strike before Longacre does, stealing both colt and mare. Again defying orders, Jim heads out alone to rescue his beloved horses, saving the life of a dying Rebel prisoner along the way. Ultimately, the colt proves to be an inspiration to Jim’s comrades in arms, and is duly immortalized by another member of the First Michigan, army artist Covington (Darcy Belsher). An uplifting tale of unassailable innocence in the midst of America’s bloodiest war, The Colt made its Hallmark channel debut on July 9, 2005. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

This program examines the obsession with the human body, from fitness crazes to the world of fashion and makeup. ~ Rob Ferrier, Rovi Great Events of Our Century: Volume 5 – Fame Andy Warhol once quipped that “In the future everyone will be famous for 15 minutes,” but his perceptive, though sarcastic, prediction was immediately adopted as the best description of the transitory nature of celebrity and the lust for fame in the late 20th century. Using archival footage, Great Events of Our Century: Volume 5 – Fame examines the concepts of “fame” and “infamy” in the 20th century, and how the prerequisites of achieving fame have altered due to technology and cultural shifts, and through the development of the entertainment industry, with its attendant publicity factory. The program also documents how old-style heroes endure. ~ Steve Blackburn, Rovi |

Investigating History: Lincoln – Man or Myth - $19.99 Nearly 150 years after the death of Abraham Lincoln, the filmmakers at The History Channel compare the many legends surrounding the beloved U.S. president against the cold hard facts in order to get a comprehensive portrait of Lincoln’s life and character. The fallacies are nearly as fascinating as the extraordinary truths as early archival materials are compared to innovative theories and discoveries, and noted historians grapple with Lincoln’s defining role as the “Great Emancipator.” It is true that Lincoln’s writings were powerful enough to sway an entire nation, and how can we even be sure of what he looked like? Discover the answers to these questions and more in a documentary that aims to untangle the many mysteries surrounding the sixteenth president of the United States of America, and the first American president ever to be assassinated. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

Abe Lincoln in Illinois – Fullscreen B&W $24.99 Raymond Massey plays Abe Lincoln in this moving adaptation of Robert Sherwood’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Expanded a bit for cinematic purposes, the film traces Lincoln’s progress from his days of scrambling for a living as a woodsman, to his courtship of the tragic Ann Rutledge (Mary Howard) and then the mercurial Mary Todd (Ruth Gordon), to the formative years of his law practice, to his debates with Stephen Douglas (Gene Lockhart), and finally to his election as President of the soon-to-be-divided United States in 1860. Latter-day critics have complained about Massey’s stolidity in his signature role, but even the most stone-hearted viewer will be moved by such scenes as Lincoln riding through the ruins of what once was the village of Salem; Abe’s heated election-eve quarrel with his spiteful wife Mary; and his climactic speech from the observation car of the train that will carry him to Washington…and immortality. Abe Lincoln at Illinois turned out to be a succes d’estime for its producer Max Gordon and its studio (RKO), taking a bath to the tune of $750,000. Its failure moved one Hollywood wise-guy to collar Gordon at a party and say, “I can’t understand it, Max. Lincoln was so kind to everybody but you.” ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |
