Dream a Little Dream 2 - Fullscreen

Dream a Little Dream 2 – Fullscreen

$5.99

This direct-to-video sequel to the teen-oriented body-swap fantasy Dream a Little Dream (1989) – which, like its predecessor, stars Corey Feldman and Corey Haim as longtime buddies Bobby and Dinger – preserves the “fantastic reality” mood of the original but offers audiences a slightly different plot conceit (and omits co-stars Jason Robards, Jr. and Harry Dean Stanton). In the sophomore outing, the boys have graduated from high school and now share an apartment with a lady friend. They happen upon two pair of magical sunglasses, one of which enables the wearer to exert total control over the doings of the person who wears the other pair. Unfortunately, the shades were invented by a homicidal nut who soon notices their absence and sets out to reclaim his property. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

During a glorious Southern California summer, high school student Benny King (Jermaine “Huggy” Hopkins) is doing time flipping burgers. Benny’s father wants him to learn the work ethic, rather than have him sit around the house all summer, dreaming and writing. It’s not surprising, then, that when his old friend Durrell (Brian Hooks) comes by with a more attractive alternative, Benny jumps at it. When his family goes on vacation, Benny borrows his father’s Mercedes and heads on down to the beach with Durrell. They have told themselves that they are there to sell beach-goers cheap sunglasses, but they are really there to party and hit on the girls. Rap and hip-hop performer Coolio, playing himself, has a brief performance. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Martin Short and Annette O’Toole star in this comedy documenting a date from hell. Short is David, a sunglasses salesman, who makes a date with Kathy (Annette O’Toole) in order to celebrate his new promotion. David and Kathy have gone out a few times before, but they both think that this is the date that will put both of them over the top, convinced that they have finally found the right person. With anxiety in their hearts, they both prepare anxiously for the date. But there is trouble on the horizon. Before heading out on the date, David discovers that instead of getting a promotion, he has been fired. Afraid that Kathy will think that he is loser, he doesn’t tell her that he lost his job. He has also borrowed the car and the apartment of his friend Bruce (Paul Reiser) for the date, permitting her to think that they all belong to him. But Kathy hasn’t been entirely truthful to David either. For example, she has conveniently forgotten to tell him about the existence of her seven-year-old daughter. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

The Omega Man – Widescreen

This second film adaptation of Richard Matheson’s science-fiction novel I Am Legend (the first version being The Last Man on Earth with Vincent Price) unfolds in a post-apocalyptic 1976. Charlton Heston is Robert Neville, the sole recipient of a serum that enabled him to survive an onslaught of germ warfare between Russia and China – which seemingly rendered him the last (normal) human alive. Neville lives in a garish, antique-strewn L.A. penthouse. During the day, he roams through the vacant city. At night, he fends off a bloodthirsty horde of mutant scavengers garbed in Spanish inquisition robes and sunglasses, led by Matthias (Anthony Zerbe), a former television newscaster in his good ol’ pre-mutant days. Matthias and his half-human vampires want to kill Neville. Neville’s last man on earth status is shattered when he comes across a group of young people, presided over by the sexy and cynical Lisa (Rosalind Cash). Neville begins to form an interest in her, as the two try to keep Matthias and his minions at bay. The Omega Man was filmed in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday afternoons, an area that consists almost exclusively of office buildings, and therefore was suitably vacant at the the time of production. In 2007, Matheson’s novel received yet another incarnation – this one with Will Smith in the Heston role. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

Personnel: JC Chasez (vocals, keyboards); Dirt McGirt (rap vocals); Homer Pierre (acoustic & electric guitars); Eric Schermerhorn (guitar, bass); Brad Daymond (guitar); Stephan Moccio (piano); Roger Joseph Manning, Jr. (Wurlitzer piano, Mellotron, keyboards); Rockwilder (keyboards, programming); Martin Flores (drums); Lenny Castro (percussion); Robb Boldt, London Jones (programming); Yehrin Dong (background vocals).Producers include: JC Chasez, Robb Boldt, Riprock, Alex G, Basement Jaxx.As the second member of N Sync (after Justin Timberlake) to release a solo album, JC Chasez doesn’t play it safe. As the title implies, the music on SCHIZOPHRENIC is intentionally eclectic. The sensual shuffle of “Some Girls (Dance with Women)” gets the album off to a lively start, and the acoustic funk of “She Got Me” follows, with Chasez’s voice and delivery reminiscent of Jamiroquai. “All Day Long I Dream About Sex” is carried by synth and bass lines that recall New Order, and “Right Here (By Your Side)” features a gentle, tropical backdrop. What’s clear in each one of Chasez’s musical moves is that he’s a powerful vocalist who can easily slide into any number of styles. And on “Come to Me,” Chasez sings over the unmistakable main riff to Corey Hart’s 1980s hit “Sunglasses at Night,” an oddly appropriate nod to pop’s past.

Two low-level American crooks head to Australia, where they match wits with a kangaroo (who appears to have an intellectual edge on his pursuers) in this broad comedy. Charlie Carbone (Jerry O’Connell) is a hairdresser from Brooklyn whose best friend, Louis Booker (Anthony Anderson), scrapes together a living moving stolen merchandise. Charlie’s stepfather, Sal Maggio (Christopher Walken), is a crime kingpin who has loaned Charlie a lot of money and wants to know when he’ll get it back; Sal’s not especially fond of Louis, especially after he and Charlie accidentally lead the police to a storehouse of burgled goods owned by Sal. Charlie owes Sal a big favor, and Sal wants Charlie and Louis out of his hair for a while, so Sal sends them to Australia, where they’re to deliver a large amount of cash to a mysterious Mr. Smith (Marton Csokas). En route to their meeting in the outback, Charlie and Louis accidentally run over a kangaroo, and the half-bright tourists decide to dress the dead marsupial in sunglasses and Louis’ favorite jacket for snapshots. However, the animal wasn’t as dead as they imagined, and it soon hops away, shortly after Louis realizes the payment to Mr. Smith was in the pocket. Now Louis and Charlie are out to find the fast-moving critter, with the help of Jessie (Estella Warren), a wildlife expert; Mr. Jimmy (David Ngoombujarra), a wilderness guide; and Blue (Bill Hunter), a pilot familiar with the outback. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Men in Black - Widescreen Fullscreen Dubbed

Men in Black – Widescreen Fullscreen Dubbed

$9.99

For his fifth effort as a feature-film director, one-time cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld brought his cartoonish visual style and darkly humorous sensibilities to this adaptation of, appropriately enough, a tongue-in-cheek sci-fi comic book. Will Smith stars as James Darrel Edwards, a New York City cop with an athletic physique and a flippant, anti-authoritarian attitude toward law enforcement. After chasing down a mysterious perpetrator one night who turns out to be an alien, James is recruited by “K” (Tommy Lee Jones), a veteran of a clandestine government agency secretly policing the comings and goings of aliens on planet Earth. Nicknamed the “men in black” for their nondescript uniform of black suit, shoes, tie, and sunglasses, the agents are assigned to recover a bauble that’s been stolen by an intergalactic terrorist (Vincent D’Onofrio). It seems the item is none other than the galaxy itself, and its theft has plunged humanity into the center of what’s shaping up to become an interstellar war, unless K and his new wisecracking partner, now renamed “J,” can stop the bad guy. On their side but somewhat in the dark is a pretty, unflappable city medical examiner (Linda Fiorentino) who has been zapped one too many times by K’s ingenious memory-sapping device. Men in Black was a box office smash, inspiring an animated children’s television series and a hit soundtrack album that featured a performance by star (and rapper) Smith. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

Scream (Bonus Tracks) (Japan)

Scream (Bonus Tracks) (Japan)

$64.99

Ozzy Osbourne’s tenth studio album was originally called Soul Sucka before fans shut the working title down. The resulting Scream may not win any awards for brain cell power as far as titles go, but the 11 tracks contained within find the Prince of Darkness in fine form. People who only know the metal legend from watching him mumble and baby step around his house in sunglasses and a track suit on reality television can hardly be blamed for steering away from his music, but it only takes one chorus of opener “Let It Die” to suggest otherwise. Like 1980′s Blizzard of Ozz (Randy Rhoads), 1983′s Bark at the Moon (Jake E. Lee), and 1988′s No Rest for the Wicked (Zakk Wylde), Scream features a changing of the guard. Enter Greek power metal guitarist Gus G., a progressive, tech-heavy shredder who can pound out drop-D, Lamb of God-inspired doom riffs (“Latimer’s Mercy”) on one hand while paying respects to Rhoads’ peerless “Diary of a Madman” intro on the other (“Diggin’ Me Down”). His enthusiasm for the material acts like a charging dock for Osbourne, who co-wrote the record with producer Kevin Churko, and while Scream suffers from the same “a handful of songs are great and the rest are OK” curse that has plagued everything since 1981′s Diary of a Madman, the songs that are great are indeed great. Ozzy Osbourne may be more product than man these days, but for every uncomfortable TV commercial there’s a “Time” or a “Let Me Hear You Scream” to help remind people that the man behind the machine still has at least one hand on the wheel. ~ James Christopher Monger

A stranger in town has some big plans that could mean the end of humanity as we know it in this blend of comedy and sci-fi thrills. Nadine Story (Traci Lords) is a nurse working in the office of Dr. Rochelle (Ace Mask) when she encounters a very unusual patient — the mysterious Mr. Johnson (Arthur Roberts), who is always dressed in black, wears dark sunglasses indoors and demands a blood transfusion. After Dr. Rochelle tests Johnson’s blood, he’s surprised to discover the man’s body isn’t producing blood in the usual manner, and Johnson hires Nadine to work in his home and give him regular transfusions. As Nadine fends off the advances of Johnson’s ex-con chauffeur and go-fer Jeremy (Lenny Juliano), he discovers that people have a habit of showing up at Johnson’s door but not going home again. With her help of her boyfriend, a motorcycle cop named Harry (Roger Lodge), Nadine discovers Johnson has a shocking secret — he’s an emissary from the planet Davanna, who is looking for a ready supply of human blood his people need to survive. Not Of This Earth was a remake of the 1957 film of the same name directed by Roger Corman, who served as executive producer for this version as well as distributing the picture. It was the first mainstream feature for former adult film actress Traci Lords, and features her last nude scene to date. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

The oft-filmed life story of Sada Abe — a courtesan who killed her lover during lovemaking and then cut off her favorite organ as a keepsake — has been the stuff of legend for over 60 years. In Nobuhiko Obayashi’s 1998 adaptation of the same story, he went for a less explicit, more postmodern tact; this film tries to get to the roots of Sada’s motives. Born into a poor and lonely childhood during the beginning of the 20th century, Sada (played by television star Hitomi Kuroki) is raped at the age of 14 by a thuggish college student (Masaku Ikeuchi) but saved from further degradation by Okada (Kippei Shina), a mysterious medical student who sports sunglasses and a long black coat. She falls for him, but unfortunately Okada has a dark secret; he has leprosy. Just before he departs from society to go to an asylum, he carves out an imaginary heart from his chest with a scalpel and gives it to Sada. Unable to get over the heartbreak of losing her true love, she becomes a prostitute. At age 29, she becomes the lover of a wealthy civil servant named Tachibana (Bengal) who buys her out of prostitution and apprentices her to a teahouse. There she meets Tatsuzo (Tsurutaro Kataoka), with whom she discovers a passion that she never found in the arms of her thousands of johns. When his wife learns of their tryst, she kicks Sada out. Soon Tatsuzo — who abandoned his wife — and Sada are holed up in a dinky apartment as sexual fugitives. Feeling like he has lived all he needs to live, he encourages her to pull the chord across his throat as part of a kinky sex game. This film won the International Film Critics Prize at the 1998 Berlin Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

The real craziness begins when they discover that the killer is one of their ex-wives and that she is living next door. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi Dream a Little Dream 2 This direct-to-video sequel to the teen-oriented body-swap fantasy Dream a Little Dream (1989) – which, like its predecessor, stars Corey Feldman and Corey Haim as longtime buddies Bobby and Dinger – preserves the “fantastic reality” mood of the original but offers audiences a slightly different plot conceit (and omits co-stars Jason Robards, Jr. and Harry Dean Stanton). ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi School for Seduction When an enchanting Italian temptress opens a School for Seduction in a small-town, four friends find their stagnant sex-lives taking on a whole new life in a passionate tale of love and lust starring Kelli Brook, Dervla Kirwan, and Emily Wool. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi The Big White A travel agent in deep debt attempts to swindle a by-the-books insurance agent by claiming the corpse of a gangland hit as his long-missing brother in director Mark Mylod’s dark crime comedy. Paul Barnell (Robin Williams) is in trouble. Saddled with a cantankerous wife (Holly Hunter) and unable to convince ambitious insurance company agent Ted (Giovanni Ribisi) to pay off the one-million-dollar claim on his brother, who has been missing for five years, Paul’s debts are mounting as fast as his life is crumbling. When Paul discovers the corpse of a nameless man who ended up on the wrong side of the mob, desperation drives him to stage a grizzly death scene and make it look as if his brother has suffered a horrible fate. Though the local police force is easily taken by Paul’s elaborate ruse, it’s going to take a little more convincing before Ted is willing to sign off on the hefty insurance payment. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Includes:Leningrad Cowboys Go America (1989), MPAA Rating: PG-13 Total Balalaika Show (1993) Leningrad Cowboys Meet Moses (1994) Leningrad Cowboys Go America The odd comedies of Finnish director Aki Kaurismaki may be an acquired taste, but it is one which more and more people are getting. The story concerns the exploits of an extremely inept but dedicated troupe of accordian musicians, “The Leningrad Cowboys,” whose sheer awfulness puts SCTV’s Schmenge brothers in the shade. In fact, in order to stop having to listen to them, a local record producer advises them to go to America, and paints a glowing picture of the success they will enjoy there. These eight Finnish lads (seven living, one very frozen corpse) are dressed as they think true hipster musicians should be (ducktails, sunglasses, fur coats, pointy-toed shoes), and they head off for New York. There they encounter yet another wise guy, who sends them off to Mexico by car to play at his cousin’s wedding (he apparently hates his cousin). Along the way, they get bookings wherever they can, learn American music styles, and get along fabulously (by their reckoning). ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi Total Balalaika Show Finland’s Leningrad Cowboys meet the ex-Red Army Choir in this inspired Finnish documentary. The Cowboys (a comedy group) claim to be the world’s worst rock and roll band. The 100 member Red Army Choir is one of the world’s premiere men’s choirs. Most of the film chronicles their June 12, 1993 concert together. Over 70,000 people crowded into Helsinki’s Senate Square for the event. To their credit the choir remains deadpan and dreadfully serious while the Cowboys cavort and dancing girls appear. Songs include “Volga Boatmen,” the Turtle’s “Happy Together,” “Finlandia,” “Let’s Work Together,” “Delilah” (sung while traditionally garbed Russian women perform a folkdance), “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” and more. For the final song both groups, arms linked, sing “Those Were the Days.” ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi Leningrad Cowboys Meet Moses This comedy is a sequel to Aki Kaurismaki’s successful Leningrad Cowboys Go America. The Lenigrad Cowboys are billed as the “worst rock’n'roll band in the world.” In the last film they went to the U.S. In this film they travel from Mexico back to Lennigrad. The story begins in Mexico. The band, after having a top ten hit, decided to settle there. Their success seemed assured until they discovered the joys of tequila which killed off many of the band members. Those that didn’t die went native. They were impoverished and living on cactus when they decide to travel to Coney Island to play a gig. They reunite with their old manager Vladimir who now calls himself Moses. He vows to return the band home to “the Promised Land,” Siberia. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
