Charlie Carbone (Jerry O’Connell) is a hairdresser from Brooklyn whose best friend, Louis Booker (Anthony Anderson), scrapes together a living moving stolen merchandise. Charlie’s stepfather, Sal Maggio (Christopher Walken), is a crime kingpin who has loaned Charlie a lot of money and wants to know when he’ll get it back; Sal’s not especially fond of Louis, especially after he and Charlie accidentally lead the police to a storehouse of burgled goods owned by Sal. Charlie owes Sal a big favor, and Sal wants Charlie and Louis out of his hair for a while, so Sal sends them to Australia, where they’re to deliver a large amount of cash to a mysterious Mr. Smith (Marton Csokas). En route to their meeting in the outback, Charlie and Louis accidentally run over a kangaroo, and the half-bright tourists decide to dress the dead marsupial in sunglasses and Louis’ favorite jacket for snapshots. However, the animal wasn’t as dead as they imagined, and it soon hops away, shortly after Louis realizes the payment to Mr. Smith was in the pocket. Scream (Bonus Tracks) (Japan) $64.99 Ozzy Osbourne’s tenth studio album was originally called Soul Sucka before fans shut the working title down. The resulting Scream may not win any awards for brain cell power as far as titles go, but the 11 tracks contained within find the Prince of Darkness in fine form. People who only know the metal legend from watching him mumble and baby step around his house in sunglasses and a track suit on reality television can hardly be blamed for steering away from his music, but it only takes one chorus of opener “Let It Die” to suggest otherwise. Like 1980′s Blizzard of Ozz (Randy Rhoads), 1983′s Bark at the Moon (Jake E. Lee), and 1988′s No Rest for the Wicked (Zakk Wylde), Scream features a changing of the guard. Enter Greek power metal guitarist Gus G., a progressive, tech-heavy shredder who can pound out drop-D, Lamb of God-inspired doom riffs (“Latimer’s Mercy”) on one hand while paying respects to Rhoads’ peerless “Diary of a Madman” intro on the other (“Diggin’ Me Down”). His enthusiasm for the material acts like a charging dock for Osbourne, who co-wrote the record with producer Kevin Churko, and while Scream suffers from the same “a handful of songs are great and the rest are OK” curse that has plagued everything since 1981′s Diary of a Madman, the songs that are great are indeed great. Ozzy Osbourne may be more product than man these days, but for every uncomfortable TV commercial there’s a “Time” or a “Let Me Hear You Scream” to help remind people that the man behind the machine still has at least one hand on the wheel. ~ James Christopher Monger |

Nadine Story (Traci Lords) is a nurse working in the office of Dr. Rochelle (Ace Mask) when she encounters a very unusual patient — the mysterious Mr. Johnson (Arthur Roberts), who is always dressed in black, wears dark sunglasses indoors and demands a blood transfusion. After Dr. Rochelle tests Johnson’s blood, he’s surprised to discover the man’s body isn’t producing blood in the usual manner, and Johnson hires Nadine to work in his home and give him regular transfusions. As Nadine fends off the advances of Johnson’s ex-con chauffeur and go-fer Jeremy (Lenny Juliano), he discovers that people have a habit of showing up at Johnson’s door but not going home again. With her help of her boyfriend, a motorcycle cop named Harry (Roger Lodge), Nadine discovers Johnson has a shocking secret — he’s an emissary from the planet Davanna, who is looking for a ready supply of human blood his people need to survive. Not Of This Earth was a remake of the 1957 film of the same name directed by Roger Corman, who served as executive producer for this version as well as distributing the picture. Sada - $14.99 The oft-filmed life story of Sada Abe — a courtesan who killed her lover during lovemaking and then cut off her favorite organ as a keepsake — has been the stuff of legend for over 60 years. In Nobuhiko Obayashi’s 1998 adaptation of the same story, he went for a less explicit, more postmodern tact; this film tries to get to the roots of Sada’s motives. Born into a poor and lonely childhood during the beginning of the 20th century, Sada (played by television star Hitomi Kuroki) is raped at the age of 14 by a thuggish college student (Masaku Ikeuchi) but saved from further degradation by Okada (Kippei Shina), a mysterious medical student who sports sunglasses and a long black coat. She falls for him, but unfortunately Okada has a dark secret; he has leprosy. Just before he departs from society to go to an asylum, he carves out an imaginary heart from his chest with a scalpel and gives it to Sada. Unable to get over the heartbreak of losing her true love, she becomes a prostitute. At age 29, she becomes the lover of a wealthy civil servant named Tachibana (Bengal) who buys her out of prostitution and apprentices her to a teahouse. There she meets Tatsuzo (Tsurutaro Kataoka), with whom she discovers a passion that she never found in the arms of her thousands of johns. When his wife learns of their tryst, she kicks Sada out. Soon Tatsuzo — who abandoned his wife — and Sada are holed up in a dinky apartment as sexual fugitives. Feeling like he has lived all he needs to live, he encourages her to pull the chord across his throat as part of a kinky sex game. The story concerns the exploits of an extremely inept but dedicated troupe of accordian musicians, “The Leningrad Cowboys,” whose sheer awfulness puts SCTV’s Schmenge brothers in the shade. In fact, in order to stop having to listen to them, a local record producer advises them to go to America, and paints a glowing picture of the success they will enjoy there. These eight Finnish lads (seven living, one very frozen corpse) are dressed as they think true hipster musicians should be (ducktails, sunglasses, fur coats, pointy-toed shoes), and they head off for New York. There they encounter yet another wise guy, who sends them off to Mexico by car to play at his cousin’s wedding (he apparently hates his cousin). Along the way, they get bookings wherever they can, learn American music styles, and get along fabulously (by their reckoning). ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi Total Balalaika Show Finland’s Leningrad Cowboys meet the ex-Red Army Choir in this inspired Finnish documentary. The Cowboys (a comedy group) claim to be the world’s worst rock and roll band. The 100 member Red Army Choir is one of the world’s premiere men’s choirs. Most of the film chronicles their June 12, 1993 concert together. Over 70,000 people crowded into Helsinki’s Senate Square for the event. To their credit the choir remains deadpan and dreadfully serious while the Cowboys cavort and dancing girls appear. Songs include “Volga Boatmen,” the Turtle’s “Happy Together,” “Finlandia,” “Let’s Work Together,” “Delilah” (sung while traditionally garbed Russian women perform a folkdance), “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” and more. For the final song both groups, arms linked, sing “Those Were the Days.” ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi Leningrad Cowboys Meet Moses This comedy is a sequel to Aki Kaurismaki’s successful Leningrad Cowboys Go America. The Lenigrad Cowboys are billed as the “worst rock’n'roll band in the world.” In the last film they went to the U.S. In this film they travel from Mexico back to Lennigrad. The story begins in Mexico. The band, after having a top ten hit, decided to settle there. Their success seemed assured until they discovered the joys of tequila which killed off many of the band members. Those that didn’t die went native. They were impoverished and living on cactus when they decide to travel to Coney Island to play a gig. They reunite with their old manager Vladimir who now calls himself Moses.
