Rather, their raw, shambling sound suggests a cross between the garage rock of the Strokes and White Stripes and the heartland sleaze-rock of Nashville Pussy. In fact, if the aforementioned garage types hadn’t loosened up the music industry a bit, it would be hard to imagine a band as down-and-dirty as this foursome getting a major label deal. The songs aren’t all blazing stompers; there are the occasional touches of acoustic guitar and piano and even a waltz tempo on one tune, but still in the same pointedly discombobulated spirit as the rockers. A hidden track on the end that sounds like EXILE-era Stones in heroin-country mode offers a hint to the Kings’ deeper roots and leaves the option of sonic advancement open for the future.

Heavy Metal Parking Lot -

Heavy Metal Parking Lot -

$14.99

A close-up view of the heavy metal scene in its heyday (maybe too close), Heavy Metal Parking Lot is an underground classic recorded on video in the parking lot of a Judas Priest concert at the Capitol Center in Largo, MD, in 1986. Director John Heyn wandered around the drunken parking lot scene and barely had to do anything other than hold up a microphone and aim the camera. Packs of plastered kids unfurled homemade Judas Priest banners, sang their favorite Judas Priest songs, played air guitar for the camera, and in general, made incredible asses of themselves. The interviews are pretty simplistic. They ask questions like, “Why are you here?” or “What do you guys think of Judas Priest?” So, the filmmakers were fortunate that the crowd that day exuded so much unbridled enthusiasm and were willing to completely lose it in front of the camera. Other than the interviews and images of fans, this short film features a couple of Judas Priest songs on its soundtrack and less than a minute of concert footage at the end to round out this nearly legendary, no-budget hit. ~ Adam Bregman, Rovi

Lot Like Love

Lot Like Love

$6.99

Composer: Alex Wurman. The soundtrack to the 2005 romantic comedy, A LOT LIKE LOVE piles on loads of smart, heady pop that focuses on the intricacies of love and relationships. This winning collection of songs features Third Eye Blind’s jangly 1997 hit “Semi-Charmed Life,” Ray LaMontagne’s Van Morrison-like ode “Trouble,” Butch Walker’s Paul Westerberg-meets-Lifehouse slice of self-doubt “Maybe It’s Just Me,” and Hooverphonic’s lush, trip-hoppy “Mad About You.” And while Chicago’s soft-rock standard “If You Leave Me Now” packs in desperation amidst lush strings and Peter Cetera’s croon, the Jet ballad “Look What You’ve Done” exudes frustration over a melancholy piano backdrop. Of the younger artists on the soundtrack, Aqualung particularly impresses with the orchestral “Brighter Than Sunshine,” and Anna Nalick contributes “Breathe (2 AM),” which recalls both Fiona Apple and Alanis Morissette.

Salem's Lot - Widescreen Subtitle AC3

Salem’s Lot – Widescreen Subtitle AC3

$17.99

In this TV adaptation of the Stephen King novel, a journalist with traumatic memories of his haunted childhood returns to find his hometown being infiltrated by vampires. As a boy in Jerusalem’s Lot, ME, Ben Mears (Rob Lowe) took a dare and broke into a local mansion called the Marsten House. There, he had the misfortune of discovering the corpses resulting from a scandalous murder/suicide. Decades later, he returns to find that a mysterious antiques dealer (Donald Sutherland) and his unseen business partner (Rutger Hauer) have moved into the Marsten House. Soon, townspeople begin disappearing and dying, only to return, floating outside the windows of their loved ones and begging to be let in. Only Ben and a few newfound allies suspect the awful truth: that something unholy has overtaken their town…something with links to the sinister mansion of Ben’s nightmares. Originally broadcast June 20 and 21, 2004, on the TNT cable network, Salem’s Lot was scripted by Peter Filardi, who previously penned The Craft and Flatliners. Shot on-location in Australia, this is the second television adaptation of Salem’s Lot, and it follows Tobe Hooper’s 1979 version. Hauer and Sutherland are old vampire buddies, having previously co-starred in the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer film. ~ Brian J. Dillard, Rovi

Salome/Lot in Sodom – B&W Dolby

$22.99

Includes:Salome (1922) Lot in Sodom (1933) Salome Seeking to bring High Art to the American hinterlands, silent film star Alla Nazimova sank a great deal of her own money into her 1922 adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s Salome. Art director Natacha Rambova (notorious as the contentious second wife of Rudolph Valentino) based her set designs on the works of fin-de-siecle artist Aubrey Beardsley. The story remains as always: Salome is coerced by her mother Herodias (Rose Dione) to demand the head of John the Baptist on a platter. She performs an erotic dance around the head, then is crushed to death by Herod’s guards. Legend has it that everyone in the supporting cast and production crew of Salome was homosexual–hand-picked by Nazimova, who reportedly believed that only a gay aggregation could do full justice to her bizarre, excruciatingly stylized cinematic vision. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Lot in Sodom No synopsis available.

When they parted, however, Emily decided not to pursue a relationship with Oliver, even though he was obviously interested. Over the next several years, circumstances kept putting them in one another’s paths, and over the years Oliver and Emily became close friends and confidantes. Both are still certain, though, that they’re entirely wrong for each other on a romantic level. However, after nearly a decade, with both Oliver and Emily edging into their thirties, they begin to wonder if they’ve allowed a great opportunity to pass them by. Spencer’s Mountain – Widescreen Subtitle

$5.99

For a family picture, not to mention a story that later became the old-fashioned-values-affirming series The Waltons, Spencer’s Mountain sure has a lot in it about sex. Henry Fonda gives an interesting portrayal in one of his more unusual roles, as Clay Spencer, the hard-drinkin’, hard-livin’, hard lovin’, hard-cussin’ patriarch of a fiercely independent Wyoming family living in the Grand Tetons. When he’s not resisting the encroachment of organized religion on his daily life (he believes in God, but doesn’t want others to tell him how to do that, or how to show respect to the Lord), he’s busy trying to finish the house he promised his wife (Maureen O’Hara) to house their constantly growing brood, and trying to help his eldest son, Clayboy (James MacArthur) — who’s going to be the first Spencer to get past high school — prepare for college and manhood, while temptation in the form of Claris Coleman (Mimsy Farmer) and Minnie-Cora Cook Kathy Bennett comes his way. There’s also a good bit of human drama here, and some especially finely nuanced performances by Donald Crisp and Lillian Bronson, as Fonda’s aging parents. Between their work, the CinemaScope photography, the gorgeous Wyoming locations, and a good basic story, this is a surprisingly engrossing comedy-drama of a kind that probably could not be made today, even with a top-name cast. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi

A man finds the son he never knew he had, and a boy discovers a city he never knew existed, in this comedy. Michael Cromwell (Tim Allen) is a commodities broker who deals in coffee beans; while on a trip to Brazil, Michael is abandoned by his wife, Patricia (JoBeth Williams), an anthropologist who decides to stay behind to study the indigenous tribespeople of the area. Fourteen years later, Michael has decided to marry his new girlfriend, Charlotte (Lolita Davidovich), but since he never formally divorced Patricia, he must go to Brazil, find her, and get her to sign a divorce agreement. Once he arrives, he discovers that there’s a bit of a complication — Patricia was pregnant at the time she left Michael, and she is now the mother of a 13-year-old son, Mimi-Siku (Sam Huntington). Mimi-Siku is about to undergo the manhood rituals of the tribe that adopted Patricia and himself, and when the leader discovers that the boy’s father has arrived, he insists that Mimi-Siku should return to the “Stone Island” of Manhattan to get to know his dad. Arriving in New York City with a loincloth and a blowgun, Mimi-Siku has a lot to learn about living in contemporary America. Charlotte is not too happy about discovering that she’s about to be a stepmother, while Richard (Martin Short), Michael’s business partner, wishes the boy wouldn’t eat the tropical fish from his aquarium. Jungle 2 Jungle is an Americanized remake of the French comedy Un Indien Dans la Ville. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
