Damaged Care - $24.99 Damaged Care is fact-based drama about the managed care industry. It originally aired on Showtime. Laura Dern co-produced and stars in the film as Dr. Linda Peeno, who gives up her career after earning a medical degree, so that she can take care of her family. Her husband, Doug (James LeGros), is a successful OB/GYN. In 1987, when their children (from previous marriages) have gotten a little older, Linda decides to return to work, and gets a job as a medical reviewer at Humana Health Care. Patient claims that aren’t approved by the UR (utilization review) nurses are forwarded to the doctors on the medical review team, who, Linda learns, are expected to rubber-stamp the UR nurses’ decisions. Every decision Linda makes to cover a patient’s care is questioned, sometimes angrily. The head of the UR department, Cheryl Griffith (Regina King) befriends Linda, and shares her unhappiness with the system. Linda has a crisis of conscience when she gets a call about an emergency heart transplant that needs immediate approval. Pressured by the company, she finds an out in the employer’s healthcare booklet, and denies the claim. The patient dies. Eventually, Linda quits Humana (angering Doug), and Cheryl gets her a job at a smaller, non-profit company, Brothers Managed Care. The system is pretty much the same, though, and Linda comes into conflict with the cost-conscious head of the UR nurses, Gemma Coombs (Michelle Clunie). When a nurse (Suki Kaiser) is stricken with a series of crippling strokes, Linda takes a stand against the company to get her the treatment she needs. Eventually, Dr. Linda Peeno gets out of the system, and becomes an outspoken critic of the abuses of the health care industry. Dern’s mother, Diane Ladd, and Adam Arkin also appear in the film. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi |

Mail Man $6.99 Personnel: E-40 (rap); Levitty (vocals); Flat Top (guitar); Sam Bostic (guitar, keyboards, programming); E-Way, Studio Ton (guitar, bass); Mike Mosley (keyboards, programming).Producers: Studio Ton, E-40, Mike Mosley, Sam Bostic.Originally issued on the indie Sick Wid It label, E-40′s The Mail Man EP was blown up into a near-album when the Jive label picked it up, added two tracks to it, and began introducing the West Coast slang king to hip-hop fans outside the Bay Area. The timing was right, too, because here the witty and hard rapper is coming into his own and nailing down the quick style that would make him a legend. He sounds ready to rise above of the bargain beats that producer Studio Ton was able to afford at the time, but the loose and homegrown feel of the EP has a streetwise charm that wouldn’t be heard again once Jive began footing the bill. “Neva Broke” and “Bring the Yellow Tape” make for a killer, lowdown opening ten minutes and the great singles “Captain Save a Hoe” and the title track are both Bay classics, although the Jive bonus remix of “Captain” sounds unfortunately thinner. The other bonus cut, “Ballin’ Out of Control,” is much better with hand-clapping funk, spacy electro, and E-40′s quirky style all coming together in perfect harmony. ~ David Jeffries |

Mail Order Bride – Widescreen $14.99 Many viewers avoided Mail Order Bride upon its first release, assuming (thanks to MGM’s shoddy promotional campaign) that the picture had been slapped together to capitalize on the popularity of Beverly Hillbillies star Buddy Ebsen. In truth, the film is an engaging and involving western drama, with Ebsen playing a character far removed from Jed Clampett. The mail order bride in question is not for Ebsen but for the wild young frontiersman in his charge (Keir Dullea). It is Buddy’s hope that the girl will tame the boy (the son of an old friend) and give him some sense of responsibility. Lois Nettelton is the proper young lady who fills the bill. In the closing scenes, director Burt Kennedy restages the climactic shootout from 1962′s Ride the High Country, which Kennedy scripted. Mail Order Bride is not only a satisfactory vehicle for Buddy Ebsen, but it also allows him an opportunity to sing the title song. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Air Mail Music: Vietnam $9.99 Imagine going to a small village in Vietnam, Bali, Romania or Cuba, recording talented musicians who weren’t necessarily professional recording artists and putting the recording on CD. That’s exactly the sort of thing that happened with the Air Mail Music series, and the results were often rewarding. It was unfortunate that the CDs’ liner notes didn’t tell you who any of those artists were — even if they weren’t professional musicians or singers, it would be nice to know something about them. When you’re savoring Air Mail Music: Vietnam, you find yourself wishing you had some information on the talented Vietnamese singers and musicians you’re being charmed by. The performances, which combine vocals with various Asian string and percussion instruments, are quite enjoyable. This is soulful music that has a lot of charm. ~ Alex Henderson |

You’ve Got Mail – Widescreen $5.99 Sleepless in Seattle director Nora Ephron originally made a name for herself as the writer of romantic comedies such as Heartburn and When Harry Met Sally. She continues the genre with You’ve Got Mail, marking her second collaboration with actors Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. The story brings romance and courtship into the electronic age of the World Wide Web via e-mail and chat rooms. Joe Fox (Hanks) and Kathleen Kelly (Ryan) live and work blocks from each other on New York City’s Upper West Side. Their lives are practically intertwined. They both shop at the same place, frequent the same coffee shop, and even own competing bookstores on the same street. They also both have significant others of their own. Joe has the overly hyper book editor Patricia Eden (Parker Posey), while Kathleen lives with the scholarly newspaper columnist Frank Navasky (Greg Kinnear). Then they meet in a chat room. Though they keep their identities secret (they’re known only by screen names “NY152″ and “Shopgirl”), they tell each other everything about their lives, including their private feelings, which slowly turn into affection for each other. When Joe decides to open a new branch of his “Foxbooks” chain that risks putting Kathleen’s “Shop Around the Corner” out of business, the tension between them escalates. Surely her boutique business will be lost to the conglomerate with a built-in newsstand and coffee bar. When Joe sees Kathleen waiting for him in the restaurant where they agreed to meet up, he puts two and two together, but cannot face her, given their agreement not to reveal each others’ names and professions. How can he reveal himself to her now, knowing that he is the cause of her misery? Hopefully, love will conquer all. ~ Chris Gore, Rovi |

Overland Mail/Human Targets – B&W $5.99 Includes:Human Targets (1932) Overland Mail (1939) Human Targets Former silent teenage star Buzz Barton headlines this juvenile Western from low-rent Big 4 Film Corp. directed by the veteran J. P. McGowan. The freckled Master Barton plays Buzz Dale, a young boy who becomes a local hero after stopping a runaway stage. Buzz’s heroic act, however, does not sit well with Duke Remsden (Edmund Cobb), the secret leader of a gang of stagecoach robbers who plans to frame his romantic rival Bart Travis (Francis X. Bushman Jr.) for the attempted robbery. Dressed as Travis, Remsden commits another crime, but Buzz discovers his hideout and is able to alert the sheriff (Franklyn Farnum). In the end, Bart is saved in the nick of time from a necktie party by Buzz and black stable hand Snowflake (Fred Toones). Remsden is finally brought to justice. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, Rovi Overland Mail Robert Emmett Tansey, production supervisor and head writer on Monogram’s Jack Randall Westerns, had the gall this time around to outright plagiarize John Ford’s newly released Stagecoach (1939). Like John Wayne in Ford’s masterpiece, Jack Randall found himself boarding a stagecoach after having his horse shot out from under him. The coach is already occupied by Mary, a saloon belle (Jean Joyce, aka Claire Rochelle), a whiskey salesman (George Cleveland), and Duke (Dennis Moore), an outlaw. By the time Jack and the passengers arrive in town, Tansey mercifully stops imitating Ford long enough to craft a none too spectacular story of Randall attempting to persuade Miss Joyce from working for Polini (Tristram Coffin, sporting the worst “foreign” accent this side of Buck Jones), whom he suspects of heading a counterfeiting ring. As it turns out, both Mary and the whiskey salesman are undercover agents and the greedy Polini is turned over to a gang of Indians, one of whom he once murdered. No one apparently complained about Tansey plagiarizing John Ford (not to mention screenwriter Dudley Nichols) and Overland Mail was dismissed as just another low-budget Western released on the lower half of double bills. ~ Hans J.
