In April 1997 he was in the final stage of the disease. Took part in a clinical trial to determine whether it is enough cord blood stem cells could be harvested for transplant to a successful adult. Damaged Care - $24.99 Damaged Care is fact-based drama about the managed care industry. It originally aired on Showtime. Laura Dern co-produced and stars in the film as Dr. Linda Peeno, who gives up her career after earning a medical degree, so that she can take care of her family. Her husband, Doug (James LeGros), is a successful OB/GYN. In 1987, when their children (from previous marriages) have gotten a little older, Linda decides to return to work, and gets a job as a medical reviewer at Humana Health Care. Patient claims that aren’t approved by the UR (utilization review) nurses are forwarded to the doctors on the medical review team, who, Linda learns, are expected to rubber-stamp the UR nurses’ decisions. Every decision Linda makes to cover a patient’s care is questioned, sometimes angrily. The head of the UR department, Cheryl Griffith (Regina King) befriends Linda, and shares her unhappiness with the system. Linda has a crisis of conscience when she gets a call about an emergency heart transplant that needs immediate approval. Pressured by the company, she finds an out in the employer’s healthcare booklet, and denies the claim. The patient dies. Eventually, Linda quits Humana (angering Doug), and Cheryl gets her a job at a smaller, non-profit company, Brothers Managed Care. The system is pretty much the same, though, and Linda comes into conflict with the cost-conscious head of the UR nurses, Gemma Coombs (Michelle Clunie). When a nurse (Suki Kaiser) is stricken with a series of crippling strokes, Linda takes a stand against the company to get her the treatment she needs. Eventually, Dr. Linda Peeno gets out of the system, and becomes an outspoken critic of the abuses of the health care industry. Dern’s mother, Diane Ladd, and Adam Arkin also appear in the film. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi |

Culture at Work $14.99 Recording information: Channel One Studios; Dynamic Sound Studios, Kingston, Kingston, Jamaica; Music Mountain Studios, Kingston, Jamaica. This reggae harmony trio, led by the mystical and charismatic Joseph Hill, made its most enduring recordings under the tutelage of the “Mighty Two” — producers Errol Thompson and Joe Gibbs — and for Sonia Pottinger’s High Note label. But this program finds them working alternately with the Roots Radics and with Sly & Robbie, whose production is just a bit dull but still packs much of the same power as the earlier Culture recordings. Culture at Work finds Joseph Hill sounding more like Burning Spear than ever, and his melodies, which are always hummable but rarely truly memorable, tread similarly familiar terrain. Same with his lyrics — “Crisis” and “I’m Worried” predict a ghetto apocalypse, “Christian” chides the clergy for its spiritual blindness, “Money Girl” scolds womankind for its greed, “Dance Hall Style” celebrates Hill’s own vocal prowess. Heard all that somewhere before? Of course you have. Doesn’t mean it isn’t worth hearing again, though. Culture at Work is no Two Sevens Clash, but it’s still worth owning. ~ Rick Anderson |

Strange Culture - $24.99 Filmmaker Lynn Hershman-Leeson examines a strange miscarriage of justice amplified by post-9/11 hysteria in this imaginative fusion of documentary and docudrama. Steve Kurtz is an artist and political activist who was an associate professor at the State University of New York’s Buffalo campus and a member of a politically oriented creative collective known as the Critical Art Ensemble. In the spring of 2004, Kurtz was preparing an installation of pieces commenting on the potential dangers of genetically modified foods for the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art when his wife, Hope Kurtz, unexpectedly suffered heart failure. Kurtz called 911 to report the emergency, but by the time the police arrived she was dead. While looking through Kurtz’s home, authorities found petri dishes used to grow bacteria and genetically modified flies the artist had obtained for his exhibit; soon, a Hazmat crew had sealed off the house, and Kurtz was behind bars under laws designed to combat bioterrorism. While Kurtz purchased his materials legally through the Internet and the case against him is flimsy at best, the FBI has refused to drop charges against him, in part because the federal government is eager to strengthen bioterrorism laws rather than call attention to their flaws, and in part because the Food and Drug Administration would prefer to keep critics of bioengineered food (which the FDA has embraced over the objection of many in the scientific community) as quiet as possible. Since Kurtz is not able to tell his own story on camera, for the film Strange Culture Hershman-Leeson has combined interviews and newsreel footage with cin?ma v?rit?-style re-creations, featuring actors Thomas Jay Ryan as Steve Kurtz, Tilda Swinton as Hope Kurtz, and Peter Coyote as Steve’s associate Robert Ferrell. Strange Culture also features an original score by pioneering experimental rock group the Residents. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Culture Vultures $17.99 Personnel: Jason Pebworth (vocals); George Astasio, Kevin Roentgen (guitar); Helen Goatly (violin, viola); Mark Brown (saxophone); Benny Edwards, Ben Edwards (trumpet); John Scott Bentjen (bass guitar); Chris Cano (drums).Producers: Noah Shain; Chris Cano; George Astasio; Kevin Roentgen; Chad Rachild; John Scott Bentjen; Jason Pebworth; Julian Gallagher.Audio Mixers: Noah Shain; Al Stone.Photographer: Ellis Parrinder. When Orson uprooted from their L.A. home and moved camp to the U.K., they were taking a big gamble with their career. When their debut album Bright Idea and it’s accompanying singles made them stars in Europe, it was obvious that their gamble had paid off big time. With great songs and a snappy image, this pop/rock quintet certainly deserved the acclaim and success that they received. Comparisons were made to former L.A. brethren Maroon 5 but, although similarities do exist, Orson came off like M5′s older, wiser brothers who chose to mix their soul influences subtly into their musical brew instead of hitting people on the head with it. So, when the boys in Orson prepared their sophomore album for release, they spoke of an edgier sound, which, in the music business, often means that they couldn’t come up with the melodic goods and they rocked out instead. Not so with Culture Vultures! In fact, if you took every great aspect of their debut and multiplied it by ten, then that is what this album is: a stunning display of fun, hooky songs played with imagination and energy. From opener “Radio” to the album’s closer “Everybody,” Culture Vultures is one hell of a great time. Imagine great ’70s “radio” pop and soul hits thrown into a blender with a little punk, a few pinches of new wave, and some chugging alt-rock guitar, then pour the whole mixture over a white, spongy angel-food cake and let the party begin! The album’s first single “Ain’t No Party” was the complete opposite of its title: it was the party single of the year. Cuts like the aforementioned “Radio,” “Little Miss Lost and Found,” and “Gorgeous” get the blood pumping in your veins like only true love can. The brilliant “Broken Watch” was scheduled as the album’s second single but was canceled when sales of the album hadn’t performed as well as expected. Now, tell me, how could an album this fantastic (and I do mean fantastic) not sell millions of copies world-wide? And why have the American record labels ignored Orson? If this was a perfect world (and we all know that it isn’t), then you’d already know about Orson and Oasis would be begging to open for them. But alas, Oasis still rule the Brit-pop/alt-rock roost and continue to release marginal albums while bands like Orson are virtually ignored…but ain’t that always the way? It goes without saying that Culture Vultures is definitely one of the best pop/rock albums of 2007 if not the best. ~ Steve “Spaz” Schnee |

Sicko – Widescreen $12.99 After exploring the predominance of violence in American culture in Bowling for Columbine and taking a critical look at the September 11th attacks in Fahrenheit 9/11, activist filmmaker Michael Moore turns his attentions toward the topic of health care in the United States in this documentary that weighs the plight of the uninsured (and the insured who must deal with abuse from insurance companies) against the record-breaking profits of the pharmaceutical industry. Moore interviews a number of people who have been left broke by medical bills even though they were fully insured, and explains how the corporate drive for profits has left numerous people in financial and medical disarray. After hearing that detainees in Guantanamo have access to free health care, Moore assembles a group of World Trade Center rescue workers to travel to Cuba in order to get the medical help they need for ailments they incurred in 2001. Moore’s film debuted at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi |

Health & Strength $14.99 In the veritable faceless crowd of DJs that flooded the reggae scene in the 1970s and 1980s, most of the best and most distinctive ones spawned a host of imitators. Only Prince Far I, with his gravelly, stentorian voice and strict spiritual focus, remained truly unique — in part because few could have imitated him if they’d wanted to, and even fewer would have dared try. Health and Strength was one of the albums he cut for Virgin’s Front Line imprint in the late ’70s; unlike the others, this one was shelved and eventually lost until a cassette copy surfaced in 1997. The cassette had been made from the original master tapes and was of surprisingly high quality; when On-U Sound’s Adrian Sherwood got his hands on it, he cleaned it up a little and released it on his own Pressure Sounds reissue imprint. The results are truly spectacular. Featuring several rare examples of Prince Far I’s singing as well as the chanting (or “toasting”) for which he was famous, Health and Strength stands with his best work. Highlights include the apocalyptic “Frontline Speech,” the admirably practical “Health Warning” (chanted over the rhythm to Gregory Isaacs’ “Sacrifice”), and “Clean Hands Pure Heart.” Essential. ~ Rick Anderson |
