The Mask - $5.99 Hyperactive mayhem results when a mild-manned banker discovers an ancient mask that transforms him into a zany prankster with superhuman powers in this special-effects-intensive comedy. The wildly improvisational Jim Carrey plays Stanley Ipkiss, a decent-hearted but socially awkward guy who one night finds a strange mask. Carrey’s trademark energy reveals itself after Stanley puts on the mask and the banker transforms into The Mask, a green-skinned, zoot-suited fireball. The rubber-faced Mask possesses the courage to do the wild, fun things that Stanley fears, including romancing Tina Carlyle (Cameron Diaz). In addition to Carrey’s physical talents, the film makes effective use of digital visual effects that bestow the Mask with superhuman speed, insane flexibility, and popping eyes out of a Tex Avery cartoon. The Iron Mask - $24.99 The Iron Mask was Douglas Fairbanks’ sequel to his popular 1921 vehicle The Three Musketeers. Fairbanks returns to his original role of D’Artagnan, while Marguerite de La Motte and Nigel De Brulier briefly reprise their Musketeers roles as, respectively, Constance and Cardinal Richelieu. After tying up loose plot ends from the first film, the middle-aged D’Artagnan and his equally venerable fellow musketeers Athos (Leon Bary, also returning from the 1921 film), Porthos (Stanley J. “Tiny” Sandford) and Aramis (Gino Corrado) set about to rescue Louis XIV (William Bakewell), the rightful King of France. Mask Of Orpheus [Complete] $39.99 This set received the 1998 Gramophone magazine award for “Best Contemporary Recording.”‘The Mask of Orpheus’ is one of the major works of Harrison Birtwistle. The libretto explores several permutations of the Orpheus myth, often simultaneously, enacted by the characters as singer, puppet and mime. Like his earlier ‘Punch and Judy,’ ‘Orpheus’ is an exercise in dramatic ritual. In addition to the main action there is also a separate troupe of mimes who interrupt the action with another six episodes accompanied by electronic music. Although it is a work of formidable intellectual power, the opera is surprisingly visceral in actual performance. Musically it is well within Birtwistle’s usual harmonic practice. As befits an opera about antiquity’s finest singer, the opera is conceived entirely lyrically with often beautiful vocal writing within the stylistic parameters.Andrew Davis leads a live performance that is beyond praise. The cast articulates their difficult music with great tonal beauty as well as nearly perfect diction. They make the frequent transitions between speech and song seamlessly. The stringless orchestra of winds, percussion and electronic instruments play wondrously and the audience is virtually silent. While not perhaps for the usual music lover, ‘The Mask of Orpheus’ demands and generously repays close attention.

The Mouse and the Mask [LP] [PA] $15.98 Considering the comic book-derived personas and pop culture-obsessed tendencies of underground hip-hop artists MF Doom and Danger Mouse, it should come as no surprise that the two should collaborate on an album featuring cartoon characters from the uber-hip Adult Swim network. THE MOUSE AND THE MASK is an occasionally surreal, frequently humorous, and always mind-expanding jaunt through rap’s more intellectual reaches. While Space Ghost and Harvey Birdman Attorney At Law rub shoulders with real-life MCs Talib Kweli and Ghostface, the Danger Doom duo’s rhymes dominate the proceedings, wasting no time in skewering the lamentable state of mainstream rap and hip-hop culture. Musically, most tracks are sparse, drawing samples from what sounds like everything from spooky gypsy violin music to greasy 1970′s funk to groovy ’60′s beatnik music. Perhaps the most telling track, however, is “Old School,” which celebrates the virtues of making music for the pure enjoyment of the craft.

When the Black Mask learns that genetic scientists worldwide are falling victim to an unknown assassin, he races to save the life of the next on the list. Arriving a bit to late, Black Mask learns that the mutants who have carried out the killings were created by the same sentient computer had which created him. Later rushing to the rescue upon learning that a professional wrestler has turned mutant and kidnapped a child, Black Mask makes the horrific discovery that terrorists plan to detonate a mutant bomb that will turn the population into hideous creatures. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The Jade Mask – Fullscreen B&W Subtitle $4.99 An engagingly silly Charlie Chan whodunit from Poverty Row company Monogram, The Jade Mask mixed science fiction with Old House melodramatics and a generous dose of comedy. The venerable Chinese detective (Sidney Toler) is this time assigned by the government to establish the whereabouts of Harper (Frank Reicher), a scientist experimenting with a formula that may turn wood into solid steel. Harper, of course, turns up very much murdered and his strange house is virtually teeming with suspects. There is the dead man’s Mrs. Danvers-like sister (Edith Evanson), a vaudeville strongwoman (short subject regular Dorothy Granger), the ubiquitous British-accented butler (Cyril Delevanti), and a mute garage mechanic (Lester Dorr). Several additional murders occur right under Chan’s nose — which nobody seems to particularly mind, least of all hayseed sheriff Al Bridge — and corpses appear to be walking up and down staircases. Despite interference from manservant Birmingham Brown (the always welcome Mantan Moreland) and the inevitably dense Number Four Son (Edwin Luke), good old Charlie manages to catch the killer — or killers — within the allotted 66 minutes. Moreland and Luke, the real-life brother of Number One Son Keye Luke, perform their usual comedic asides, but the best lines are awarded to Preston Sturges stock-company regular Al Bridge as the plainspoken, homily spouting sheriff. Mask – Widescreen Subtitle AC3 Director’s $8.99 This is the true story of Rocky Dennis (Eric Stoltz), a personable young man suffering from “lionitis,” a fatal disease which causes hideous facial disfigurement. The son of freewheeling biker Rusty Dennis (Cher), Rocky is accepted without question by his mom’s boyfriends and cycle buddies, but treated with pity, condescension, and disgust by much of the outside world. The local high school principal tries to get Rocky classified as brain-damaged so he won’t have to enroll the boy in his school, but Rusty fights for her son’s rights with the ferocity of a mother lioness. Rocky makes friends easily both at school and at summer camp. He also falls in love with Diana (Laura Dern), a blind girl who cannot see his deformed countenance and is entranced by the boy’s kindness and compassion. Now that he’s got his own life in order, Rocky sets about to wean his chronically depressed mother from her drug habit. Mask is the sort of story that might have ending up wallowing in its own pathos had the acting, direction and scriptwriting (by Anna Hamilton Phelan) been anything less than very good. The film proved a much-needed financial success for director Peter Bogdanovich, though unfortunately it didn’t come soon enough to stave off his declaring personal bankruptcy. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Aided by heroine Ginny O’Donnell (Sheila Ryan), Ramsey follows the trail of clues to a deserted TV studio (actually Los Angeles’ KTLA). Sid Melton provides comedy relief as the head villain’s dopey henchman. The Man From Cairo casts Raft as an American vacationing in Algiers. In short order, he becomes involved with a group of mercenaries who are searching for a fortune in gold that was lost somewhere in the desert during WW II. Gianna Maria Canale co-stars as a sexy nightclub chanteuse who, like everyone else in the film, isn’t all she seems to be. At the same time, millionaire Bruce Wayne holds a party at his mansion. There he meets Councilman Arthur Reeves, the man behind the accusations. Reeves derides playboy Wayne for allowing his college sweetheart Andrea Beaumont to leave him. Suddenly Wayne flashes back to his pre-Batman days. He remembers how he met her while visiting his parents’ graves to renew his vow that he would spend his life fighting crime to avenge their wrongful deaths. He has already devised an early version of his alter-ego Batman, but that is nearly forgotten when he falls in love with Andrea. The story then jumps from past to present and back as the mysterious Phantasm strikes again. Batman continues his investigation and discovers a disturbing link between Andrea, who suddenly shows up after many years absence, and the villain. Meanwhile, the Phantasm, feeling that Batman is too close to learning his/her identity hires the Joker to kill him. But the Joker has his own agenda and much action ensues before the mystery of the Phantasm identity is solved, Batman clears his name, and justice is served. This film was originally made to go straight to video, Warner’s studio liked it enough to release it theatrically. It’s 1850, and the people of California, eager to improve their difficult lot in life, have launched a campaign to become part of the United States. Don Alejandro de la Vega (Antonio Banderas) has become aware of a plot by moneyed Europeans to block the campaign for statehood through nefarious means, and it looks as if Alejandro’s heroic alter ego, Zorro, may have to return to duty. However, Alejandro’s wife, Elena (Catherine Zeta-Jones), has grown weary of his secret life, and she demands that he choose between his family and his clandestine career as a champion of the people. This leads to a rift between Alejandro and Elena, and the couple separates, with Alejandro moving out while Elena continues to care for their son, Joaquin (Adrian Alonso). A few months later, Alejandro finds that Elena is already being wooed by Armand (Rufus Sewell), a suave French nobleman who wants her hand in marriage. However, Alejandro also learns that Armand is actually part of a plot to prevent California from attaining statehood by tampering with an upcoming election; meanwhile, there may be more to Elena’s involvement with Armand than romantic courtship.
