Memphis - $19.99 The Tony Award-winning musical about the birth of modern rock ‘n’ roll makes the leap from stage to screen in this performance featuring the original Broadway cast. During the 1950s, racial tensions in the U.S. were at an all-time high. Segregation was the norm, but colorblind DJ Harry Calhoun (Chad Kimball) only cared about the music. Inspired by the intense energy of rock ‘n’ roll, white Harry found himself at the epicenter of a major cultural shift after falling for a talented black singer (Montego Glover), and teaming with her to change the course of musical history. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

Police Academy/Police Academy 2 [2 Discs] - $12.99 Includes:Police Academy (1984), MPAA Rating: R Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment (1985), MPAA Rating: PG-13 Police Academy Public safety takes a turn for the worse in this hit comedy, which spawned a long-running franchise. As a crime wave sweeps through a major city, the mayor decides that part of the problem may stem from overly restrictive qualifications for police officers, so she opens the door of the city’s Police Academy to anyone who wants to join. Soon, the new class is overrun with misfits and losers, including Carey Mahoney (Steve Guttenberg), who is given the choice of joining the force or going to jail; Karen Thompson (Kim Cattrall), a pretty cadet whom Mahoney has his eye on; Moses Hightower (Bubba Smith), a mountain of a man who likes to tend flowers; and Larvell Jones (Michael Winslow), who has an uncanny ability to imitate the sound of practically anything. Constantly befuddled Commandant Lassard (George Gaynes) and his lackey, Lt. Harris (G.W. Bailey), are none too thrilled with their new charges, but as they try to wash their hands of the cadets, Mahoney and his classmates become all the more determined to make good. The surprising success of Police Academy spawned six sequels and two TV series. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment In this weak, undistinguished sequel to the successful Police Academy, Mahoney and his cohorts have now graduated from their police training and are ready to tackle real criminals. The first assignment for the enthusiastic former cadets is to halt the graffiti-scribbling antics of a local gang of marauding toughs. The new lieutenant at the station (Art Metrano) is not anxious to see them succeed — and begins to roadblock their efforts against the graffiti artists. Not to be easily outmaneuvered, Mahoney and friends plot an appropriate revenge. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi |

Daddy and the Muscle Academy – Subtitle $24.99 The Finnish documentary Daddy and the Muscle Academy is the story of gay artist Tom of Finland. The viewer is treated to hundreds of vividly rendered portraits of male models, ranging from (according to the videocassette liner notes) “Drummer Daddies to fellow artists”. Tom’s sketches and paintings are grouped by subject matter, with emphasis on various forms of fetishism. The film includes interviews with the artist’s models, associates and intimates, not to mention a dramatized journey into “Tom’s soul”. By its very nature, Daddy and the Muscle Academy can boast only limited audience appeal, though both gay and non-gay artists might appreciate Tom of Finland’s painstakingly detailed technique. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

The Memphis Belle – B&W Collector’s $14.99 Filmed in color, The Memphis Belle has long been held up as a “model” wartime documentary. In a terse, exciting 41 minutes, the film assembles footage from several allied bombing missions into one single representative flight of the famed Flying Fortress known as The Memphis Belle. Though both the crewmen and the filmmakers take considerable pride in the fact that the Belle has completed 25 successful missions, there’s no phony heroism, no grandstanding, no flagwaving. As calm-voiced narrator Ed Kern explains, the Belle has a job to do, and it does it, and that’s all. The danger facing these Flying Fortresses is underlined, but never overemphasized, by brief glimpses of those doomed ships that didn’t make it back. Memphis Belle was directed by William Wyler, who also flew several missions with the crew, manning the camera himself at considerable risk. The overall excellence of The Memphis Belle is even more obvious when compared to the hokey fictionalized 1990 movie version of the Belle’s 25th mission. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Roy Orbison Sings / Memphis $17.99 The fifth and last volume of Edsel Records’ reissues of Roy Orbison’s MGM albums is not the strongest of the series, but it has its virtues, including Orbison’s surprisingly consistent and powerful singing, even on the Milestones material, where his goal was to deliver an album just good enough to fulfill his contract. The Memphis album is the most interesting while Sings is the strongest of the three, and Milestones is filled with superb (and a couple of surprising) covers of songs associated with other artists. The annotation is a bit uneven, thorough where Sings is concerned and very sketchy for Memphis and Milestones. The sound is excellent all around. ~ Bruce Eder |

The overall excellence of The Memphis Belle is even more obvious when compared to the hokey fictionalized 1990 movie version of the Belle’s 25th mission. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Thunderbolt Filmed in Technicolor, Thunderbolt was the last of Major William Wyler’s wartime directorial efforts on behalf of the US Army Air Corps. As in his previous WW2 documentaries, Wyler himself participated in the mission that he depicts herein on film. The title refers to the huge bombers used by the Corsica-based 57th fighter group. The film concentrates on “Operation Strangle”, the all-out assault agains t the Nazi stronghold at Monte Cassino. Adding poignancy to the film is the knowledge that several of the extremely young American participants, here shown smiling and waving at the camera, did not survive the battle. Released to the troops in 1945, Thunderbolt was distributed theatrically in 1947. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

The Beauty Academy of Kabul - $24.99 A team of women attempts to bring a vital part of the American way of life to war-torn Afghanistan in this documentary. Sponsored by U.S.-based manufacturers of hair-care products and cosmetics, a group of American volunteers traveled to Afghanistan to start the nation’s first Western-styled school of cosmetology after the collapse of the Taliban. Eager to offer Afghan women a different way of looking at themselves and others, the friendly but often gregarious Americans occasionally find themselves at odds with their Afghan students, who still possess deeply ingrained notions of modesty and gender inequality as they learn to style hair and apply makeup as they do in the West. The Beauty Academy of Kabul was shown in competition at the 2004 Tribeca Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |
