Mental Health Care Givers

Possesisive and jealous?
I work in a residence for men with mental health problems. Helped this year's six-client months he became very jealous when other males were around, and saw everything he was doing. I was touched by his unit nine months ago and moved down yet is very possessive and jealous of me now. Every time I leave fag breaks, the window shows me her room, and when you quit fags with your provider, you will find in our kitchen window to see where I am. I told my manager, but there's nothing I can do to stop it. the client gets very upset and may even break your room when I see around other people. is likely to worsen with jealousy.
Wow, you must be careful, you might want to harm in any way. And my faith itself he's so jealous and possessive, ignore it, will bring no harm, though it makes you feel uncomfortable, no problem. But yes, his jealousy could be worse, or stay the same, because I'm not sure if it could be worse than that.

Thank God For Mental Illness $13.99 Brian Jonestown Massacre: Anton, Sophie, Dean, Matt.Recorded on July 11, 1996.At the risk of further belaboring a rather obvious point, with Thank God for Mental Illness, their third collection of absolutely stunning music in less than a year, the Brian Jonestown Massacre parallels the prolific and effortless brilliance of the Rolling Stones at their fevered late-1960s peak; the sheer scope of their achievements is stunning — rarely are bands quite so productive, or quite so consistently amazing. Thank God is the BJM’s down-and-dirty country-blues outing, all 13-odd tracks supposedly recorded on a single July day at a cost of just $17.36; while it lacks the blistering immediacy of their previous material, the album swaggers and struts with all of the group’s usual attitude intact, coming complete with a loose, offhanded feel perfectly accenting the overall atmosphere of debauchery — “Too Crazy to Care,” “Sound of Confusion” and “Talk Minus Action Equals Shit” aren’t just song titles, they’re words the band lives by. ~ Jason Ankeny |

Damaged Care - $24.99 Damaged Care is fact-based drama about the managed care industry. It originally aired on Showtime. Laura Dern co-produced and stars in the film as Dr. Linda Peeno, who gives up her career after earning a medical degree, so that she can take care of her family. Her husband, Doug (James LeGros), is a successful OB/GYN. In 1987, when their children (from previous marriages) have gotten a little older, Linda decides to return to work, and gets a job as a medical reviewer at Humana Health Care. Patient claims that aren’t approved by the UR (utilization review) nurses are forwarded to the doctors on the medical review team, who, Linda learns, are expected to rubber-stamp the UR nurses’ decisions. Every decision Linda makes to cover a patient’s care is questioned, sometimes angrily. The head of the UR department, Cheryl Griffith (Regina King) befriends Linda, and shares her unhappiness with the system. Linda has a crisis of conscience when she gets a call about an emergency heart transplant that needs immediate approval. Pressured by the company, she finds an out in the employer’s healthcare booklet, and denies the claim. The patient dies. Eventually, Linda quits Humana (angering Doug), and Cheryl gets her a job at a smaller, non-profit company, Brothers Managed Care. The system is pretty much the same, though, and Linda comes into conflict with the cost-conscious head of the UR nurses, Gemma Coombs (Michelle Clunie). When a nurse (Suki Kaiser) is stricken with a series of crippling strokes, Linda takes a stand against the company to get her the treatment she needs. Eventually, Dr. Linda Peeno gets out of the system, and becomes an outspoken critic of the abuses of the health care industry. Dern’s mother, Diane Ladd, and Adam Arkin also appear in the film. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi |

Mental Floss for the Globe [LP] $42.98 Includes a bonus live disc from the MENTAL FLOSS FOR THE GLOBE tour.Urban Dance Squad: DNA (Special EFX, turntables, backing vocals); Rude Boy (vocals); Tres Manos (guitar); Silly Sil (bass); Magic Stick (drums). The 1990 debut of Urban Dance Squad revealed a band smashing the boundaries between rock, funk, punk, metal, and hip-hop. “Fast Lane” leads the program with a blistering groove powered by chugging guitar and sampled horns. Later, “Brainstorm on the U.D.S.” alternates rap verses with a punky shoutalong chorus, while “The Devil” borrows a murky string bassline and greasy slide guitar from the Tom Waits bag. Rudeboy never really sings; rather, he raps or — when the song demands it — sort of chants along in a singsong cadence. But for a non-singer he has a great voice, one that comes from the chest but has a sharp enough edge to cut through the mix. Also notable are polymath guitarist Tres Manos and the unbelievably funky bass of Silly Sil. ~ Rick Anderson |

The Cramps: Live at Napa State Mental Hospital - $14.99 In June 1978, the Cramps, a pioneering New York-based rock band who blend the primitive twangy stomp of rockabilly with the attitude and willful perversity of punk, were touring the West Coast and discovered they’d been lined up with perhaps the most unusual gig of their career. The Cramps were booked to play a show at the Napa State Mental Hospital, a facility for the emotionally challenged, and found themselves facing an audience that was half smuggled-in punk fans and half in-patients whose reaction to the performance was often vocal and demonstrative. A cameraman from the punk-oriented video collective Target Video was on hand with a primitive black-and-white camera, and the results became the infamous The Cramps: Live at the Napa State Mental Hospital. As the band faced a truly unusual audience, it roared through a handful of songs, including “Human Fly,” “Love Me,” “Domino,” “The Way I Walk,” “What’s Behind the Mask,” and “T.V. Set.” In 2003, British performance artists Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard staged a videotaped recreation of the Cramps’ Napa performance, which received enthusiastic reviews when screened under the title File Under Sacred Music. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Nobody’s Child – Dolby $8.99 Marlo Thomas fully justifies her star status in the made-for-television Nobody’s Child. Ms. Thomas portrays the real-life Marie Balter, a Massachusetts woman consigned to a mental hospital after a suicide attempt at age 16. For the next 20 years, Marie is and out of the institution, mostly under the care of a sensitive doctor (Caroline Cava) who treats her for panic disorder and depression. Finally able to curb her inner demons without the use of drugs and therapy, Marie leaves the hospital for good, hoping to pursue a normal life. She falls in love with another ex-mental patient (Ray Baker), and strives successfully to earn a college diploma (she later became a health administrator). Aside from Marlo Thomas’ Emmy-winning performance, Nobody’s Child boasts the stunning camerawork of longtime Ingmar Bergman associate Sven Nykvist. One scene, in which Marie Balter imagines she sees serpents emerging from a typewriter, is as frightening a piece of celluloid as has ever been presented on television. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Mental Cruelty (The 1960 Jazz Soundtrack) [LP] $26.98 This is the soundtrack to the 1960 film MENTAL CRUELTY, directed by Hannes Schmidhauser.Personnel: George Gruntz (piano); Barney Wilen (saxophone); Kenny Clarke (drums); Marcel Peeters, Raymond Court, K.T. Geier.Includes liner notes by George Gruntz.John Corbett wasn’t kidding when he said that he was going to start releasing non-vanguard jazz titles in the Atavistic Unheard Music Series. If this is a representative example, then bring them on. Pianist and composer George Gruntz is in the company of saxophonist Barney Wilen, drummer Kenny “Clook” Clarke, and a pair of unknown Europeans on bass and another saxophone. The unheard record in question is a 1960 soundtrack to a Swiss film called Mental Cruelty, which was made by a former soccer star. The soundtrack was issued by Decca, briefly, on 10″ EP, until the musicians realized it — they were paid for a film soundtrack, not a recorded one. Decca refused to pay, lost in court, and had to destroy what remaining vinyl they had, making this a thousand dollar collector’s item. Given that this was Gruntz’s first soundtrack, it’s extremely impressive. There are 18 tracks, all of them in the prevailing hard bop style of the day with some cool and noir-ish elements thrown in. But it feels more like a blowing session in the same way the Miles Davis soundtrack to L’Ascenseur pour L’Echafaud by Louis Malle did; loose blowing based on images and rushes from the film. Wilen is in especially fine form here: His tone has that big full sound with just a hint of the edge of Sonny Rollins in it. Gruntz is obviously a cocky, confident young pianist, but he is humbled by Clarke’s mastery on the swinging bop tunes and even on the two waltzes, which were the first Clarke had played on record in his life. This is more than a cool jazz record; it is a bit of hipster history with the chops to back up its obscurity. Highly recommended. ~ Thom Jurek |

Health & Strength $14.99 In the veritable faceless crowd of DJs that flooded the reggae scene in the 1970s and 1980s, most of the best and most distinctive ones spawned a host of imitators. Only Prince Far I, with his gravelly, stentorian voice and strict spiritual focus, remained truly unique — in part because few could have imitated him if they’d wanted to, and even fewer would have dared try. Health and Strength was one of the albums he cut for Virgin’s Front Line imprint in the late ’70s; unlike the others, this one was shelved and eventually lost until a cassette copy surfaced in 1997. The cassette had been made from the original master tapes and was of surprisingly high quality; when On-U Sound’s Adrian Sherwood got his hands on it, he cleaned it up a little and released it on his own Pressure Sounds reissue imprint. The results are truly spectacular. Featuring several rare examples of Prince Far I’s singing as well as the chanting (or “toasting”) for which he was famous, Health and Strength stands with his best work. Highlights include the apocalyptic “Frontline Speech,” the admirably practical “Health Warning” (chanted over the rhythm to Gregory Isaacs’ “Sacrifice”), and “Clean Hands Pure Heart.” Essential. ~ Rick Anderson |
