Moderate Severe

My son is moderate to severe deaf, and he is not adjusting well in school, should I home school him?
He is being mainstreamed this year, and he is just not happy. He cries everyday when he comes home, and this goes on through the night. He is now having headaches and stomache aches. He told me the kids yell at him in class, as though they think he cannot hear at all. He’s also being picked on at recess, but the teachers always seem to place the blame on my child. I have tried to work it out with the school, but my son just seems so unhappy, they said he laid on the floor most the day crying. I had to go pick him up early, turns out he was faking a headache to get to come home. He is only in first grade this year, and I want him to have the best chance to succeed, and I’m not sure if I know how to teach a special needs child, even though I have homeschooled two other children for 5 years. I know I will do what I have to do, but how long should I let this go on? This same school didn’t even want to provide him with what he needed to learn for his disability.
First, learn about Deaf Culture and learn to use ASL with your son. If there is a deaf school near you, look into his academic placement at a deaf school. People in Deaf Culture do not consider themselves disabled. They consider themselves deaf. The only thing they can’t do is hear. They can communicate quite well in their natural language, which is signing, if they are taught to use it.
The school system may well consider deaf people disabled, and in that case, the system is legally mandated to provide your son with appropriate free public education. Mainstream classes can be extremely traumatic for children who are “different” and subjected to abuse by other children, which then makes mainstream classes an inappropriate education. As parents, we have to learn to provide first-line advocacy for our children to the school system. It is important for us to know federal and state laws impacting the education of our children and to demand compliance with those laws. You can take the first step by requesting IN WRITING a MFE (multifactored evaluation) and an IEP (individualized education plan) for your child. The school district has 90 days to complete the MFE after it has been requested (or at least that has historically been the time limit on it), and once the IEP is developed, the school district is required to follow it. If home schooling is part of the IEP, the school district is then required to provide the home schooling programming. If deaf school is part of the IEP, the school district can be required to pay for special school placements, such as deaf school, if there is any special placement. If your son is allowed to continue in an abusive situation, he will grow to hate school and may either develop real behavior problems or become very withdrawn as a coping mechanism. He is a little guy who deserves to be loved and respected, and to have an advocate. His advocate is you, and that is a position you can never afford to give up while he is a minor. When he gets a little older, you can teach him to advocate for himself, but in first grade he is just vulnerable to every outside influence he encounters.

Severe Injuries - $14.99 A singularly untalented murderer crosses paths with someone who knows the ropes all too well in this satiric comedy that pokes fun at vintage slasher films of the 1980s. Melvin Hubble (Charlie Fleming) is a young man who, in order to obey his father’s dying request, goes into the family business. There’s just one problem — the family tradition that Melvin is to follow is becoming a serial killer, and while the guy has the will to become a multiple murderer, he’s not very good at it. With his reputation at stake, Melvin stakes out the Ro Ro Ro Sorority House just as they’re about to throw one of their famous parties, but while every serial killer clich? is in the cards, Melvin can’t kill anyone properly. Besides, as it happens, Melvin has competition, as another, more skillful killer is already making mincemeat of the girls and their dates. Severe Injuries features cameo appearances from “scream queens” Brinke Stevens and Debbie Rochon, as well as Troma Team Pictures founder Lloyd Kaufman. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Sworn Vengeance $14.99 Severe Torture is one of Scandinavian Death Metal’s darkest, most brutal practitioners. As refined as a scalpel, and just as likely to draw blood, SWORN VENGEANCE is a scarily focused new effort welded together of equal parts precise playing and terrifying noise. Opener “Dismal Perception” sets the tone with a relentless flurry of drum rolls, guttural vocals, and slashing guitars, but “Fight Something” flips the script with slower tempos and moodier textures. It’s on razor-wire blitzkriegs such as “Dogmasomatic Nausea,” however, that Severe Torture really reaches a full head of steam. Given their name, one would expect this kind of album, but it takes real skill to do it this well. |

A Christian Testimonial $20.99 Its severe title notwithstanding, Christian Testimonial captures the Dixie Hummingbirds at their most daring, drawing on secular R&B hallmarks to push their breathtaking harmonies in appealing new directions. Backed by little more than simple guitar accompaniment, the Hummingbirds evoke the clarity and purity of a cappella, but their harmonies also boast an elasticity unmistakably rooted in street-corner doo wop; alter the subject matter from Jesus to the pretty girl next door, and Christian Testimonial would fit comfortably alongside the best of the Drifters or the Clovers. ~ Jason Ankeny |

Funk-O-Metal Carpet Ride $15.99 Though the Electric Boys weren’t as successful as they deserved to be, the distinctive hard rockers enjoyed some moderate MTV exposure with their grinding hits “Psychedelic Eyes” and “All Lips and Hips” — both of which are among the highlights of this inspired, Bob Rock-produced debut album. Despite what its title implies, Funk-O-Metal Carpet Ride isn’t funk/metal in a Red Hot Chili Peppers-like fashion — rather, the melodic yet aggressive band had more in common with Aerosmith’s intense boogie. Combining an Aerosmith-influenced sense of fun with elements of ’60s psychedelic rock (including a sitar), the Electric Boys made Carpet one of 1990′s most memorable hard rock releases. Unfortunately, their moderate success has proved to be short-lived. When alternative rock came to dominate MTV in 1992 and 1993 and Aerosmith-influenced bands significantly decreased in popularity, the Electric Boys became a casualty of changing tastes. ~ Alex Henderson |

Mary Wilson (Lauren German) was born and raised in Texas, but by the time she became an adult she’d grown tired of her off-the-wall family and moved East to build a career for herself. Desperate to keep the store afloat, Mary decides to bite the bullet and go back to Texas for a visit; her plan is to bring along her fianc? Rise of the Footsoldier – Widescreen Subtitle AC3 Dolby $12.99 Julian Gilbey’s fact-based crime saga Rise of the Footsoldier traces one man’s meteoric ascension from a lucrative soccer career, through the ranks of organized crime, to the status of Britain’s most omnipotent drug lord. The tale begins in the 1970s, when hooligan Carlton Leach (Ricci Harnett) finds himself implicated in a series of violent skirmishes on the soccer fields of England. Prompted to leave this activity and enter another trade, Leach self-incorporates as a company called ICF – a front for the young entrepreneur’s drug-dealing activities. Soon, Carlton’s business flourishes – first with cocaine, then with ecstasy and heroin (as time rolls forward from the self-serving 80s into the 1990s), but with it comes severe addiction and, disturbingly, wave after wave of nerve-wracking violence. More hardened, more severe criminals turn up to do business with Carlton’s associates, forcing Carlton to recruit tougher and more psychopathic elements to protect himself – particularly when the goods from a heroin shipment disappear and Turkish thugs begin closing in. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi |

D2: The Mighty Ducks - $12.99 In this sequel to the kid-friendly sports comedy The Mighty Ducks, Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez) takes one more shot at a career as a professional hockey player, but a severe knee injury sidelines him for good. However, his success coaching a rag-tag pee-wee hockey team in Minneapolis (as chronicled in the first film) has attracted the attention of a major sportswear firm, which hires him to coach the United States team for the Junior Goodwill Games. Gordon reassembles most of the Mighty Ducks along with several new players, including a huge bully who is great on defense (if low on social skills), a figure skater who knows how to move on the ice, and a hotshot goalie who happens to be a girl. However, the excitement of a trip to Los Angeles and a large dose of overconfidence puts the team at a severe disadvantage when they’re pitted against the top-ranked Icelandic team. D2: The Mighty Ducks features cameo appearances from hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, champion figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, whose athletic career has never involved ice skating. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

The Baby Maker – Widescreen $14.99 Barbara Hershey stars as the “baby maker” of the title. Tish Gray (Hershey) hires herself out to married couple Jay and Suzanne Wilcox (Sam Groom and Collin Wilcox-Horne), who’ve been unable to conceive a child of their own. Tish agrees to bear the child for them, assuming that her hippie boyfriend, Ted Jacks (Scott Glenn), will go along with the plan. The problem is that Tish must allow Jay to impregnate her, causing severe strains on both couple’s relationships. In 1970, the notion of surrogate motherhood was radical in the extreme, so The Baby Maker seemed quite progressive and daring. This served as the theatrical-feature directorial debut for screenwriter James Bridges. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Anatomy of a Shark Bite – Fullscreen AC3 Dolby $8.99 While plenty of scientists have done research on the phenomenon of shark attacks, Dr. Erich Ritter has an unusual degree of experience in the subject. In 2002, while working with the Discovery Channel on a documentary on shark behavior, Ritter was given a severe bite on the leg by a bull shark weighing 350 pounds. The attack was caught on film (one of the very few times this has happened), and Ritter survived to tell about it in Anatomy of a Shark Bite, which examines not just the attack on the scientist, but the nature of sharks, how and why they approach their victims, and what he and his colleagues learned from the incident. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Lomax the Songhunter – Subtitle $17.99 During his lifetime, Alan Lomax stood alone via the originality of his contributions to Twentieth Century folk music; a veritable walking music encyclopedia with a passion for various local cultures, Lomax spent his life journeying from country to country and city to city, and recording the musical sounds of the indigenous peoples whose paths he crossed. He died in 2002; one year prior to him death, however, documentarists Adri Schrover and Roger Kappers visit him – only to discover that he has been rendered mute via a severe brain hemorrhage. Confronted with this knowledge, the filmmakers decide to embark on a transcontinental journey in an attempt to locate and film many of the people whose sounds Lomax preserved, in such rural locales as Italian mountain villages and nearly-vacant Scottish islands. Lomax the Songhunter captures the highlights of this incredible journey, intercut with protracted on-camera reminiscences by Lomax’s friends and colleagues. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi |

Ginseng Woman/Multiplication $6.99 Originally released as 2 separate LPs.When it comes to smothering a recording with over-production or being much too slick for his own good, keyboardist Bob James is an expert. In the 1970s, James lent his “expertise” to Eric Gale’s albums Ginseng Woman and Multiplication (which were united on a single CD in 1991). To be sure, James’ arranging is excessive. But the damage isn’t as severe as one might imagine, and the ubiquitous jazz/R&B/pop guitarist actually has enough room to stretch out at times — as does Grover Washington, Jr. (tenor sax). Far from exceptional but generally decent and enjoyable, these albums make it clear that Gale could be a very appealing and tasteful soloist when given room to breathe. ~ Alex Henderson |

Chihuly: Fire & Light - $29.99 The ‘Chihuly’ of the title is in fact Tacoma-born artist Dale Chihuly, a maverick sculptor glass-blower noted for his ability to continue to work effectively despite two enormous handicaps: the loss of one eye from a severe automobile accident, and the loss of movement in one shoulder from a surfing incident. In response to these setbacks, Chihuly transitioned by necessity from creating art with his own two hands, to orchestrating a team of artists who routinely work for him. This documentary observes Chihuly in his studio as he coordinates his team and puts together the most ambitious creation of his life, eventually mounted at the de Young Museum in San Francisco, California. That exhibit made history by drawing around 400,000 visitors over a period of 15 weeks, making it the most popular site in the museum’s history and the most visited artwork of Chihuly’s long career. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi |

Dear Pyongyang - $19.99 The political divide between Japan and South Korea is mirrored in the troubled relationship between a woman and her parents in this documentary. Filmmaker Yang Yonghi was born to ethnically Korean parents living in Japan; hoping to spare their three sons the severe prejudice they believe befalls Koreans in Japan, Yonghi’s parents sent the boys to live with family in Korea, though they opted to keep their daughter Yonghi with them in Osaka. Yonghi took a camera crew with her to Korea as she visited her brothers, seeing them for the first time in years, and talked with them about how the separation from their parents left a mark upon their lives. Later Yonghi returned to Japan and interviewed her mother and father about the decisions they made in their lives, their feelings about both Korea and Japan, and their relationship with their children. Dear Pyongyang received its North American premiere at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |
