Sigh No More $49.99 English folk outfit Mumford & Sons’ full-length debut owes more than a cursory nod to bands like the Waterboys, the Pogues, and the Men They Couldn’t Hang. The group’s heady blend of biblical imagery, pastoral introspection, and raucous, pub-soaked heartache may be earnest to a fault, but when the wildly imperfect Sigh No More is firing on all cylinders, as is the case with stand-out cuts like “The Cave,” “Winter Winds,” and “Little Lion Man,” it’s hard not to get swept up in the rapture. Like their London underground folk scene contemporaries Noah & the Whale, Johnny Flynn, and Laura Marling, Mumford & Sons’ take on British folk is far from traditional. There’s a deep vein of 21st century Americana that runs through the album, suggesting a healthy diet of Fleet Foxes, Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens, Blitzen Trapper, and Marah. That melding of styles, along with some solid knob-twiddling from Arcade Fire/Coldplay producer Markus Dravs, helps to keep the record from completely sinking into the quicksand of its myriad slow numbers — tracks like “I Gave You All,” “Thistle & Weeds,” and “After the Storm” are pretty and plain enough, but they neuter a band this spirited. Sigh No More is an impressive debut, but one that impresses more for its promise of the future than it does its wildly inconsistent place in the present. No More Pain $26.99 Still powering their way to the top of the boy band rankings whenever they release an album, in No More Pain Kat-Tun show that they are continuing to develop musically, but at the same time their sounds hark back to other boy bands and earlier musical ideas. The album opens in epic fashion, signaling a comeback despite the band not having left the scene. They go through a couple of simpler affairs quickly, but come back for a particularly tweaked piece of electro-dance with “The D-Motion” and an extra dose of Auto-Tune over steeper electro-dance in the vein of Juno Reactor with “Right Now.” Corniness seeps in during the following track, and remains for a while in the middle of the album. The standard selection of solo tracks from the various members is thrown into the mix on No More Pain rather than relegated to an add-on disc, a refreshing attempt to both fill space and make the solo numbers more relevant. There’s a simple but nice ballad in the early-’90s U.S. R&B vein from Kamenashi Kazuya, a bit of rap that actually works out well from Taguchi Junno (he makes strong use of the syllabic structure of Japanese), and Tanaka Koki provides a bit of fairly straightforward dance music. The remaining members put together interesting bits, both forgettable (Ueda Tatsuya) and memorable (Nakamura Yuichi’s attempt at a Ken Hirai-like pop number). The album finally finishes up with classic Kat-Tun motifs in “Hello,” combining acoustic guitar, drum machines, and a marching beat. The album doesn’t deliver anything new to the world of Japanese boy bands, but it keeps Kat-Tun in form. They don’t obviously improve on previous works or detract from their legacy, as it were. Hello More $13.99 Plane: Ed Anderson, Joel Pasia.Plane’s fourth album is a stark departure from their previous self-released efforts. Long the sole province of singer/songwriter Edgars Legzdins (who has always been the Chicago-based group’s only constant), the latest lineup includes guitarist Ed Anderson, who adds his own vocals and songwriting to Legzdins’ quirky musical world and increases the pop song quotient by a factor of ten. The other change is the newfound prominence of vintage synthesizers, tape loops, and a cranky, elderly drum machine that beats out a staticky tattoo over the top of most of the songs. About half of the album works a treat: the genuinely catchy electro-pop of “Heart & Soul” (which sounds like it’s mostly Anderson’s work) is a perfect match for the spooky atmospherics of “Western Avenue,” and the centerpiece track, “Mr. Edgars” (a recording of a somewhat snippy voice mail from the Chicago Police Department threatening to tow Legzdins’ car, set to a Residents-like synth warble), is the best of the oddball found-sound interludes. Unfortunately, said interludes almost outnumber the actual songs, which gives Hello More a curiously fragmented, incomplete air. The combination of Anderson’s knack for a memorable tune and Legzdins’ defiantly eccentric path has created some of Plane’s most enjoyable music yet, and with a bit more inspiration from both parties, the next album might be better still. ~ Stewart Mason |
