Outspaced $11.99 OUT SPACED is a great find for Super Furry Animals fans. Here, many of the Welsh quintet’s 1990s B-sides and rarities are collected. Where a lot of bands fill B-sides with inferior, throwaway material, the Super Furries are reliably eclectic and inventive enough to craft always-interesting takes on their blend of psychedelia, electronica, dance, punk, and hook-heavy power-pop.The expletive-laced opener is a classic Super Furries tune, moving through a shimmering, reverb-heavy verse before launching into a guitar boogie for the sing-along chorus. The group then shifts to full-fledged electronica on the expansive “Dim Brys Dim Chwys,” before kicking off “Smokin’,” a funky rocker about the pleasures of herbal indulgence. A number of the songs are in Welsh, including the weird “Fix Idris,” yet their mystery is balanced by the straightforward Ramones-esque blast of “Guacamole.” OUT SPACED is probably not the place for newcomers to start exploring SFA’s unique world, but it is a strong compilation and a must for devoted fans. |

Three – Widescreen Subtitle Dolby $12.99 Three constitutes an omnibus package of three short horror films made by Asian directors. “Memories,” made by Kim Ji-Woon, is about a woman (Kim Hye-Soo) who disappears from the home she shares with her husband (Jung Bo-Seog) and children, and ends up in a futuristic city filled with many disturbing hindrances to her finding her way back home. Nonzee Nimibutr’s “The Wheel” contains a puppeteer who is unsuccessful in warning a dance troupe about using cursed puppets. Peter Ho-Sun Chan’s “Coming Home” stars Eric Tsang as a policeman who becomes involved with his neighbors, a married couple who are involved in with some mysterious herbal medications. Three was screened at the Vancouver Film Festival. Vision - $24.99 Margarethe von Trotta, one of the most celebrated female directors in the German cinema, pays homage to another remarkable woman in this screen biography of 12th century Renaissance woman Hildegard von Bingen. Hildegard (Barbara Sukowa) came to live at the Disibodenberg abbey when she was a youngster, and grew up under the watchful but compassionate eye of Jutta the Holy (Mareile Blendl). In her teens, Hildegard became a nun and was known among her peers for her generous nature and desire to help others; she developed a talent for formulating herbal medicine as well as gift for composing music, and after three decades she was selected to become a magistra at the abbey. Hildegard was born during a time when women were expected to serve and not to preach, but she fearlessly began speaking to others about her religious visions, which she used as a vehicle to share lessons in faith in a manner that circumvented the rules. Hildegard also fearlessly denounced the violent self-abasement that was common among holy men and women of her day, believing that a faith born of kindness and devotion was more valuable than that which came from fear and pain. While Hildegard won may friends through her work, she also gained more than a few enemies, and while some denounced her for not restricting herself to the traditional role of a woman in the church, others contended that her holy visions were not the work of the Lord, but of the Devil. Go Fish – Subtitle $12.99 This hit arthouse ensemble piece traces the romantic and political ups and downs of a group of multicultural Chicago lesbians. The central story involves an unlikely romance between Max (Guinevere Turner), a hip young babe, and Ely (V.S. Brodie), a slightly older woman involved in a long-term, long-distance relationship that’s basically a smokescreen for her fear of romantic risk. When the pair are introduced by Max’s roommate, teacher/activist Kia (T. Wendy McMillan), Max isn’t interested in Ely, whose long hair, hippie accoutrements, and fondness for decaffeinated herbal tea don’t impress the younger, more fashion-conscious woman. Soon, though, fate, friends, and Ely’s butch new hairstyle conspire to push the women closer together. As this new romance inches along, the pair’s friends have problems of their own: Kia must help her closeted girlfriend, Evy (Migdalia Melendez), come to grips with the disapproval of her conservative Latina mother, while their pal Daria (Anastasia Sharp) incurs the disapproval of the lesbian community for her decision to sleep with a man. Filmed in black and white on-location in Chicago, Go Fish features a number of non-standard narrative devices, most notably the Greek chorus, or “jury,” of lesbians who comment on not only the plot, but also the political and social ramifications thereof. Shown in competition at Sundance in 1994, Go Fish went on to earn critical and commercial success and establish the careers of director Rose Troche and actress Turner, who together co-wrote and co-produced the picture.
