At Fillmore East $89.99 The Allman Brothers Band: Gregg Allman (vocals, piano, organ); Dickey Betts (guitar); Duane Allman (guitar, slide guitar); Berry Oakley (bass); Jai Johanny Johanson (drums, congas, timbales); Butch Trucks (drums, timpani).Additional personnel: Thom Doucette (harmonica). Recorded live at the Fillmore East, New York, New York on March 12-13, 1971. Originally released on Capricorn.Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity’s proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24-karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box.The original Fillmore East album is one of the finest live documents of the rock era, capturing the original line-up of one of the ’70s’ tightest outfits before they were cruelly robbed of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley. Taken from five 1971 performances at New York’s fabled Fillmore East, the extended and effortlessly melodic workouts of “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed” and “Whipping Post” still have the power to rivet and move.On display here is the Allmans’ fabled chemistry at its finest. The band not only rocks, it rolls, swings, and stretches out in exploratory, jazzy passages. The dual guitar interplay of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts glides effortlessly over the propulsive rhythm section of Oakley and twin drummers Jaimoe and Butch Trucks, while Greg Allman’s powerful blues voice and melodic keyboard work provides the icing on the cake. Though the later-released THE FILLMORE CONCERTS presents these songs in their original entirety, AT FILLMORE EAST, with its seamless edits of multiple performances, may be the superior recording. It highlights all the glint and sparkle of what still ranks among the best jamming committed to record. |

Goodnight Mister Tom - $14.99 In this adaptation of the novel by Michelle Magorian, John Thaw stars as Tom Oakley, an old man with a short temper who doesn’t have much use for people. However, after the outbreak of World War II, Tom is forced to take in Willie Bech (Nick Robinson), a young boy who has been evacuated from London and sent to the small village Tom calls home. Willie is a quiet, withdrawn child whose childhood has not been a happy one; Tom learns to draw him out, tutors him in reading and writing, and encourages his creative gifts. An unexpected bond develops between Tom and Willie, and when the boy’s mother wants him to return to a London that’s been torn apart by the blitz, Tom doesn’t want him to leave — and neither does Willie. Goodnight, Mister Tom received its American premier on PBS’s Masterpiece Theater in 1999. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Gone is the earnest, coffehouse folkie feel, replaced by squadrons of percolating synthesizers and snappy loops. Together with new writing partner/co-producer Lester Mendez, she seems to have worked out a way to mate Max Martin-style pop hooks with her own sometimes-introspective, sometimes-philosophical lyrics. There are plenty of songs that deal strictly with the vagaries of romance, but there’s also “America,” where Jewel gets overtly political, and “Stand,” where she laments the failure of Woody Guthrie’s visions in contemporary society. So while a casual listen might give the impression that yesterday’s Jewel had become strictly a memory, there’s a continuing lyrical thread on 0304 that extends like a dangling lifeline to the singer’s old fans. |

Chicken Little – Widescreen Dubbed Subtitle AC3 $19.99 An old fable gets a high-tech update in this computer-animated comedy from Walt Disney Pictures. Chicken Little (voice of Zach Braff) is an earnest young fowl living in the town of Oakley Oaks who one day starts a panic when a falling acorn drops on his head, and he warns everyone that the sky has started to collapse. Chicken Little was wrong, of course, much to the embarrassment of his father, Buck Cluck (voice of Garry Marshall), and now the young chicken is struggling to live down the incident. While his best friends Abby Mallard (voice of Joan Cusack), Runt of the Litter (voice of Steve Zahn), and Fish out of Water stand by him, the school’s star athlete Foxy Loxy (voice of Amy Sedaris) never passes up an opportunity to make fun of the diminutive chicken. As a result, Chicken Little tends to keep his more recent discoveries to himself, but what’s a bird to do when he uncovers pseudo-scientific evidence that suggests the sky really is starting to fall, in large hexagonal chunks? Chicken Little was directed by Mark Dindal, who previously helmed The Emperor’s New Groove for Disney. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

crazy/beautiful – Special $4.99 The Romeo and Juliet story has been modernized to a high school setting previously, but this romance from director John Stockwell turns the tale inside out. Jay Hernandez stars as Carlos Nunez, a poor but athletically gifted Latino teenager who endures a two-hour bus ride every day from East L.A. to attend the posh, wealthy Pacific Palisades High School in Los Angeles on a football scholarship. A straight-A student, Carlos is focused and driven, but his future is cast in doubt when he becomes the flirtation target of spoiled, self-destructive bad girl Nicole Oakley (Kirsten Dunst), who’s the daughter of a prominent congressman (Bruce Davison). When his friends, family, and even Nicole’s own father oppose the romance for Carlos’ sake, he chooses to ignore their advice and stubbornly pursues his relationship with Nicole, whose feelings grow from simple physical attraction to something much deeper. Crazy/beautiful is directed by writer, actor, and director John Stockwell, who also penned the same year’s Rock Star. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi |

The Convent - $12.99 Adrienne Barbeau stars in this campy horror flick about dead nuns and the undead. The film opens with the legendary massacre at the St. Francis Boarding School for Girls. One night in 1960, a disgruntled former student saunters into the school chapel and kills a bunch of nuns and a priest with a shotgun. The deranged student, young Christine (Oakley Stevenson), then douses the mother superior with gasoline and sets her on fire with the flick of a lit cigarette. Forty years later, the shuttered school is a popular haunt for drunken frat boys and pasty-faced goths. When the cops make their usual bust of trespassing revelers, black-bedecked Mo (Megahn Perry) sticks around, only to be kidnapped for a Satanic human sacrifice. The inept devil worshippers inadvertently call up a real live demon when they stab Mo. Most of the ersatz Satanists are either butchered or rendered evil ghouls. Fortunately, Clarissa (Joanna Canton), the obligatory “nice-girl” in the band, manages to flee the school and find refuge with Christine (Barbeau), who was recently released from a mental asylum. With some coaxing, Christine agrees to break out the armaments and fight against the demons. Rap star Coolio appears as a freaked-out cop in the film. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi |

Best of Classic TV Westerns [2 Discs] - $5.99 Includes:The Fighting Westerner (1935) The Lone Ranger: Pete and Pedro (1949) Rim of the Canyon (1949) The Roy Rogers Show: The Train Robbery (1952) The Cisco Kid: Buried Treasure (1952) Annie Oakley: Sharpshooting Annie (1954) Bonanza: Death at Dawn (1960) Bonanza: Badge Without Honor (1960) The Fighting Westerner Randolph Scott stars in this adequate Zane Grey adaptation. Lawman Larry Sutton (Scott) is assigned to solve a series of murders occurring at a radium mine. Among the suspects is mine owner Mrs. Borg, played by legendary Broadway star Leslie Carter in a rare film appearance. The key to the mystery would seem to be a sinister Chinese gent named Ling Yat (Willie Fung), but he proves to be one of many red herrings. Hoping to beat Sutton to the solution is local sheriff Tex Murdock, played by veteran vaudevillian Chic Sale. With so much high-powered talent, it’s small wonder that many reviewers failed to mention the ingenue, a young actress named Anne Sheridan. A remake of the 1922 film Golden Dreams (the original title of the Zane Grey novel), Rocky Mountain Mystery was reissued as Vanishing Pioneer. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi The Lone Ranger: Pete and Pedro No synopsis available. Rim of the Canyon Gene Autry plays a dual role in the above-average Columbia oater Rim of the Canyon. Our hero plays “himself” and his own father, a famed sheriff. Twenty years ago, Autry Sr. threw a trio of outlaws (Walter Sande, Jock Mahoney and Francis McDonald) into jail for stealing a large sum of money. When the crooks escape and head for the hidden loot, it’s up to Autry Jr. to track them down. Unlike previous Columbia Autrys, Rim of the Canyon downplays the musical element in favor of fast, sometimes violent action. Even Autry’s faithful horse Champion gets in on the act by trampling one of the crooks. Autry’s leading lady this time out is Nan Leslie, later a busy TV character actress; another future TV favorite, Alan Hale Jr., essays a supporting role. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi The Roy Rogers Show: The Train Robbery No synopsis available. The Cisco Kid: Buried Treasure No synopsis available. Annie Oakley: Sharpshooting Annie No synopsis available. Bonanza: Death at Dawn The first season of Bonanza came to an end on April 30, 1960, with the episode titled “Death at Dawn.” Laurence Mascott’s teleplay would seem to have been influenced by the like-vintage TV series The Untouchables, as a gang of 19th century gangsters holds Virginia City in thrall, forcing the citizens to buy protection lest “accidents” befall them. When a store owner is murdered by gang member Perkins (Gregory Walcott), the only witness, the victim’s wife Beth (Nancy Deale), is terrorized into silence. Determined to bring Perkins to justice, Ben Cartwright offers Beth safe harbor at the Ponderosa-whereupon gang leader Sam Bryant (Robert Middleton) kidnaps Ben and offers to release him in exchange for Perkins. Featured in the cast are Morgan Woodward (Sheriff Biggs), Wendell Holmes (Judge Scribner), |

Wipe Windows Check Oil Dollar Gas (Japan) (Mlps) $54.99 Full title: Wipe the Windows, Check the Oil, Dollar Gas.The Allman Brothers Band: Gregg Allman (vocals, guitar, organ, Clavinet); Richard Betts (vocals, guitar, slide guitar); Chuck Leavell (piano, electric piano, background vocals); Lamarr Williams (electric bass); Butch Trucks (drums, tympani, percussion); Jaimoe (drums, percussion).Engineers include: Johnny Sandlin, Tom Flye, Tom Scott.Recorded live at various venues in California and New York between 1972 and 1975. Originally released on Capricorn (0177). Includes liner notes by Mike Hyland and Mark Pucci.By 1976, it had been five years since the release of the Allman Brothers’ breakthrough (and all-time classic) release LIVE AT THE FILLMORE EAST. With the band calling it quits, the Allmans record company decided this would be the perfect time to issue a follow-up–WIPE THE WINDOWS, CHECK THE OIL, DOLLAR GAS.With original members Duane Allman and Berry Oakley deceased, the mid-’70s Allmans line-up was patched up by bassist Lamar Williams and second keyboardist Chuck Leavell, helping to show that the group still could work their in-concert magic. With “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” the only song from the FILLMORE release to reappear here, such post-Duane gems as “Jessica” and “Ramblin’ Man” shine in a live setting, making WIPE THE WINDOWS a worthy addition to any Allman fan’s album collection. |

Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues: Allman… $11.99 Full title: Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues: Allman Brothers.Allman Brothers Band: Gregg Allman (vocals, piano, organ); Dickey Betts (acoustic & electric guitars, background vocals); Duane Allman (acoustic & electric guitars); Berry Oakley (bass, background vocals); Butch Trucks, Jaimoe (drums, percussion).Additional personnel: Dan Toler (guitar); Jim Essery, Thom Doucette (harmonica); Chuck Leavell (piano); David Goldflies (bass).Producers: Adrian Barber, Tom Dowd, Johnny Sandlin, The Allman Brothers Band.Compilation producers: Bill Levenson, Jeffrey Peisch.Recorded at Atlantic Studios, The Fillmore East, New York, New York; Capricorn Sound, Macon, Georgia; Criteria Studios, Miami, Florida; Ludlow Garage, Cincinnati, Ohio between 1969 & 1979. Includes liner notes by Martin Scorsese, Scott Schinder. This is part of “Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues” series. As any fan knows — heck, as anyone who’s listened to the radio since 1970 knows — there was much more to the Allman Brothers Band than blues. Blues-rock, however, was a foundation of their music, and that’s what you’ll hear on this compilation, which is part of the Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues CD series, issued in conjunction with the television documentary series The Blues. As is proper, almost all of this is from the band’s early years; all but two of the songs were recorded between September 1969 and June 1971, and none of them postdate 1979. So the accent falls very heavily on their Southern rockified covers of blues songs by Elmore James, T-Bone Walker, Muddy Waters, Blind Willie McTell, and Sonny Boy Williamson, including tunes that were among the group’s most popular, among them “Trouble No More,” “Statesboro Blues,” “One Way Out,” “You Don’t Love Me,” and “Dimples.” That means there’s no room for the considerable chunk of their repertoire that also mixed in pop, straight-ahead hard rock, jazz, and country, like “Dreams,” “Ramblin’ Man,” “Whipping Post,” and “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.” But if you are in the mood for the blues and the blues only, this is certainly a good (and long, running 74 minutes) sampler of the sounds that made them the most esteemed American blues-rock interpreters. ~ Richie Unterberger |

In 1970, Brown’s bandleader/sax player Maceo Parker departed to form his own band, taking much of Brown’s group with him. This event heralded the arrival of the JB’s, which included monster bassist Bootsy Collins, whose hyperkinetic style made Brown’s funk harder, leaner, and meaner. This album gives listeners a bird’s-eye view of the change, featuring the final sessions of the Maceo-led band as well as the first recordings of Bootsy and the JB’s.Maceo and company were at their hardest and funkiest at this point, as seen on “The Funky Drummer,” where Clyde Stubblefield lays down the drum break that would launch a thousand hip-hop samples. Stubblefield stuck around long enough to be part of the first JB’s, whose tracks here are full of frenetic, barely controlled energy. Three Stooges: The Outlaws Is Coming – Widescreen Subtitle $12.99 Includes:Goofs and Saddles (1937) The Outlaws Is Coming (1965), MPAA Rating: NR Goofs and Saddles The Three Stooges actually play different characters here (or at least they have different names, different hairstyles, and different mustaches) — Curly is Buffalo Bilious, Moe is Wild Bill Hiccup, and Larry is Just Plain Bill. They are General Muster’s three best scouts, and now that the Indian problem is solved, he needs them to round up a gang of cattle rustlers. At first this sounds like bad news for General Muster and his men but, surprisingly, the boys are nearly halfway competent — either that, or the rustlers are even more stupid than they are. Disguised as big gamblers from the West (sans mustaches and back to their usual hair), the Stooges head over to the Longhorn saloon, where they sit down to a card game with Longhorn Pete, the proprietor — who’s also the head of the rustlers. They’ve sent a note, via pigeon, asking for reinforcements, but the bird happens to be Pete’s pet and their identities are uncovered. They escape in a wagon containing pots and pans which they toss out to stall their pursuers. There’s also a monkey who terrorizes Curly. They wind up at a cabin where they shoot it out with the bad guys. When some bullets accidentally fall into a meat grinder Curly is using, it becomes a machine-gun-like device. The Stooges vanquish the rustlers and, as they are being congratulated, the monkey takes over the meat grinder and sends them off in a hail of bullets. Some shots from this picture would be recycled in 1954′s Pals and Gals. ~ Janiss Garza, Rovi The Outlaws Is Coming The Three Stooges (Moe Howard, Larry Fine, and Curly Joe De Rita) leave Boston for the Wild West when they are fired from the Society for the Preservation of Wildlife. With Eastern editor Kenneth Cabot (Adam West), the boys find themselves in lawless Wyoming and the target of every infamous gunslinger of the era. With help from Annie Oakley (Nancy Kovak), the Stooges and Cabot fight the likes of Billy the Kid, Johnny Ringo, Jesse James, Cole Younger, and the Dalton Gang, and soon Wild Bill Hickok and Bat Masters arrive in a blaze of bullets. Watch for longtime Stooges foil Emily Sitar in a triple role as Aberrant, a U.S. cavalry Colonel, and the Witch Doctor, with Henry Gibson as Charlie Horse, and Murray Alper as Chief Crazy Horse. Ellwood Ullman provides the screenplay from the story by director Norman Maurer, Moe’s son-in-law. With character names like the Sunstroke Kid and Trigger Mortis, this last of the Stooges feature films ranks among the best. Annie has a fight in the middle of town with Belle Starr (Sally Starr), and the cowardly editor Cabot proves his bravery and falls for his heroine Annie. Years later in a tribute to history’s longest running comedy trio, Adam West fondly remembered his experience in making The Outlaws Is Coming with the Stooges. West would score his biggest career plume with the television series Batman, but he was obviously in a |
