Obama Health Care Army

The Trillion Dollar Mayhem
Asking any American citizen, what in their opinion is the greatest threat to our economy, one would receive various responses. Terrorism, trade deficit, recession, oil prices and mortgage crisis would be a few answers that would top the list. Alan Greenspan, our previous chairman at the Federal Reserve stated he believed without a doubt that Medicare was our biggest problem (Colvin 1). Currently Medicare is a multi-trillion dollar issue that is viewed as going to become substantially worse. While Medicare and health care costs cannot completely go hand in hand, they sum up together as a problem that our nation cannot continue to ignore. If Medicare consistently grows as it has been along with its two other brother and sister programs, Medicaid and Social Security, they will consume all of GDP and the entire federal budget of this country.
Medicare cares for most Americans over the age of 65 and anyone with certain disabilities. It is mostly covered by payroll taxes provided by the typical working American and currently is about the same percentage of with holdings as the federal tax. The way Medicare is soaring means that taxes will only increase for years to come. The central dilemma lies with the retirement of the baby boomers, one of the largest amounts of citizens in terms of generations. The United States seems to have this motto where every human being should be kept alive for as long as possible, even if it means keeping a comatose person on a life support machine for years. One of Medicare’s largest expenses is the amount of waste used by the system. There is plenty of evidence that shows Medicare expenditures are spent for health care and the outcome has no benefit (Hogberg 3). Sometimes you cannot cure the health of an elderly person simply because they are old and their bodies and health are suppose to deteriorate, that if life. There is no sense in giving them needless prescriptions when the outcome will remain the same. Having worked in a retirement home, I was amazed at a conversation I had over listened to. Some of the residents were arguing over who had to take the most pills for their problems. One resident had over ten different types. In my mind it sounded wasteful and not a good use of my tax money. The retirement of the baby boomers will only increase wasteful use of the Medicare program. It also does not help that people are living longer.
There is a strong link between the economy and Medicare. For the past two decades the economy was cruising along and growing at a healthy rate which counteracted with the increase in payments for Medicare. Today is a much different story. Some say we are in a recession and our economy is growing at a dismal pace while Medicare costs continue to sky rocket. In 2007 health care costs under Medicare consumed $1.76 trillion dollars or 13% of our nation’s GDP. 2008 is estimated to hit $1.9 trillion or 13.5% of GDP. By 2013, it is projected to swallow up $2.65 trillion or 16.2% of GDP (8). These forecasts will most likely be incorrect due to analysts have missed other years previous estimates and the actual amount will be much more. Medicare is out of control fiscally speaking and cannot continue to grow more than our economy.
What are solutions to controlling these rising costs? Only a few weeks ago, the Senate attempted to block Medicare pay cuts to doctors. The only problem is it has never been successful (Goldstein 1). Doctors are not going to stand for a pay cut. Could one imagine if doctors all across America decided to go on strike? Everyone on Medicare would really be out of luck. A recent popular solution would be “Medicare for all” or universal health care. This topic has been heating up in recent years especially due to the fact that many countries in the European Union have adopted this policy. As the next presidential election is coming quickly, one would think that the greatest threat to America’s economy would be top priority for the candidates to discuss. Unfortunately it is a topic they barely like to comment on. It was no secret that Senator Clinton was all for socialized medicine. Barack Obama and John McCain both have mentioned the Medicare mess, but have not any concrete solutions to the problem. They all took on the more populist viewpoint where they were telling the citizens what they wanted to hear (Colvin 1). “Medicare for all” is not the best solution, but that is a whole other topic in itself.
The truth is there may not be any correct answer to fixing the rising costs of Medicare, but something needs to be done to contain it. If Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security consume all of GDP and the federal budget, then it means no Army, no Navy and no Education Department, only these three programs. We all know that it would be impossible to eliminate the Army and Navy, but it is a perspective worth taking into view. The United States is unprepared for what might be the greatest financial disaster in its history.

Frontline: Obama’s Deal - $19.99 Gain a deeper understanding of how the Obama administration functions as Frontline producer Michael Kirk pulls back the curtain to reveal how the early decisions made by the 44th President of the United States could ultimately define his entire legacy. From Obama’s early efforts to overhaul the health care system to his acrid debates with the Tea Party, the administration faced an imposing uphill battle from day one. Damaged Care - $24.99 Damaged Care is fact-based drama about the managed care industry. It originally aired on Showtime. Laura Dern co-produced and stars in the film as Dr. Linda Peeno, who gives up her career after earning a medical degree, so that she can take care of her family. Her husband, Doug (James LeGros), is a successful OB/GYN. In 1987, when their children (from previous marriages) have gotten a little older, Linda decides to return to work, and gets a job as a medical reviewer at Humana Health Care. Patient claims that aren’t approved by the UR (utilization review) nurses are forwarded to the doctors on the medical review team, who, Linda learns, are expected to rubber-stamp the UR nurses’ decisions. Every decision Linda makes to cover a patient’s care is questioned, sometimes angrily. The head of the UR department, Cheryl Griffith (Regina King) befriends Linda, and shares her unhappiness with the system. Linda has a crisis of conscience when she gets a call about an emergency heart transplant that needs immediate approval. Pressured by the company, she finds an out in the employer’s healthcare booklet, and denies the claim. The patient dies. Eventually, Linda quits Humana (angering Doug), and Cheryl gets her a job at a smaller, non-profit company, Brothers Managed Care. The system is pretty much the same, though, and Linda comes into conflict with the cost-conscious head of the UR nurses, Gemma Coombs (Michelle Clunie). When a nurse (Suki Kaiser) is stricken with a series of crippling strokes, Linda takes a stand against the company to get her the treatment she needs. Eventually, Dr. Linda Peeno gets out of the system, and becomes an outspoken critic of the abuses of the health care industry. Dern’s mother, Diane Ladd, and Adam Arkin also appear in the film. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi |

This Is the Army - $5.99 The splashy, star-studded This is the Army is based on the Irving Berlin Broadway musical of the same name, which in turn was a reworking of Berlin’s WW1 “barracks musical” Yip Yip Yaphank. In both instances, the cast was largely comprised of genuine servicemen, many of them either recently returned from fighting or on the verge of heading off to war. The Hollywood-imposed storyline concerns Jerry Jones (George Murphy), a member of the original 1918 Yip Yip Yaphank cast. His showbiz career curtailed by a leg injury, Jerry becomes a producer during the postwar era. When the US enters WW2, Jerry gathers together several other cast members from the 1918 Berlin musical to help him stage a new all-serviceman show, titled (what else?) This is the Army. The show-within-a-show framework is able to accommodate a romantic subplot, involving Jerry’s son Johnny (Ronald Reagan, later a political comrade-in-arms of George Murphy) and Eileen Dibble (Joan Leslie), the daughter of Yip Yip Yaphank alumnus Eddie Dibble (Charles Butterworth). Some of the best moments in This is the Army are from the Broadway production itself, though the lengthy Alfred Lunt-Lynn Fontanne imitation and incessant “gay” jokes may have been too smart for the room in 1943. Guest stars include boxer Joe Louis, Kate Smith (singing “God Bless America”, naturally) and Irving Berlin himself, who steals the show with his plaintive rendition of “Oh, How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning”. All profits for the stage and film version of This is the Army went to the Army Emergency Relief Fund, which also controlled the rights to the film. Long withheld from TV distribution, the film finally hit the small screen when it lapsed into Public Domain in the mid-1970s. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

At War With the Army - $4.99 Though At War With the Army was the third film appearance of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, it was the team’s first starring vehicle. A pattern is set herein for all the Martin-Lewis flicks to follow: Martin plays a self-assured romeo, forever bursting into song, while Lewis is a hopeless screw-up unable to perform the simplest task without wreaking havoc (in this one, he can’t even operate a Coke machine properly). Mike Kellin repeats his Broadway role as M&L’s tough topkick while Polly Bergen makes a very brief appearance. Because it has lapsed into public domain, At War with the Army is one of the most available of the Martin and Lewis films. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Working beside Manouchian was his wife, M?lin?e (Virginie Ledoyen), a poet-turned-underground fighter; Marcel (Robinson St?venin), a Jewish volunteer who is an excellent shot with a rifle; and Thomas (Gr?goire Leprince-Ringuet), a passionate Marxist with a skill for making bombs. But despite their cunning and talent, Manouchian and his partners find it difficult to keep their work a secret, and in time they’re found out by a ruthless detective (Jean-Pierre Darroussin) with the Vichy police. L’Arm?e du Crime (aka The Army of Crime) was based on the true story of a French resistance group dubbed “the Army of Crime” in Vichy propaganda pieces. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Pharaoh’s Army - $8.99 This fascinating historical drama, set in 1862 during the Civil War, chronicles the coming of age of a young Kentucky farm boy. The story begins in Meshack Creek, KY, a tense town where loyalties were sharply divided. Sarah Anders and her son were living there on an isolated farm while her husband was off fighting with the Confederates. They are one day jeopardized by the sudden arrival of Union-Army captain John Hull Abston and his ragged regiment. While they stay, Sarah and the captain begin a begrudging friendship based on mutual respect. Both of them have lost loved ones in the conflict, and the two are emotionally vulnerable. When one of the soldiers is seriously wounded during an accident, the regiment is forced to remain longer on the little farm. Conflict ensues between the captain and his men, when they keep stealing livestock from impoverished enemy farmers. Meanwhile the narrator, then a boy, is forced to use his gun against another human. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi |
