Why ObamaCare is Wrong for America: How the New Health Care Law Drives Up Costs, Puts Government in Charge of Your Decisions, and Threatens Your Constitutional Rights $5.23 Most people initially had high hopes for health reform. There clearly are problems that must be fixed. The president had promised that if reform passed, everyone would be able to get health insurance, costs would go down, and we would be able to keep both our doctors and our coverage. And we were told that reform would even cut the deficit and make Medicare stronger. But the law that actually p… |

Damaged Care - $24.99 Damaged Care is fact-based drama about the managed care industry. It originally aired on Showtime. Laura Dern co-produced and stars in the film as Dr. Linda Peeno, who gives up her career after earning a medical degree, so that she can take care of her family. Her husband, Doug (James LeGros), is a successful OB/GYN. In 1987, when their children (from previous marriages) have gotten a little older, Linda decides to return to work, and gets a job as a medical reviewer at Humana Health Care. Patient claims that aren’t approved by the UR (utilization review) nurses are forwarded to the doctors on the medical review team, who, Linda learns, are expected to rubber-stamp the UR nurses’ decisions. Every decision Linda makes to cover a patient’s care is questioned, sometimes angrily. The head of the UR department, Cheryl Griffith (Regina King) befriends Linda, and shares her unhappiness with the system. Linda has a crisis of conscience when she gets a call about an emergency heart transplant that needs immediate approval. Pressured by the company, she finds an out in the employer’s healthcare booklet, and denies the claim. The patient dies. Eventually, Linda quits Humana (angering Doug), and Cheryl gets her a job at a smaller, non-profit company, Brothers Managed Care. The system is pretty much the same, though, and Linda comes into conflict with the cost-conscious head of the UR nurses, Gemma Coombs (Michelle Clunie). When a nurse (Suki Kaiser) is stricken with a series of crippling strokes, Linda takes a stand against the company to get her the treatment she needs. Eventually, Dr. Linda Peeno gets out of the system, and becomes an outspoken critic of the abuses of the health care industry. Dern’s mother, Diane Ladd, and Adam Arkin also appear in the film. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi |

Bad Santa – Widescreen AC3 Dolby $6.99 The Christmas season just got a lot less joyous in this very dark comedy. Willie T. Stokes (Billy Bob Thornton) is a con man and a thief who teams up with his friend Marcus (Tony Cox), a midget, for a very special scam each year during the holiday season. Willie gets a job as Santa Claus at a shopping mall, his pal tags along as an elf, and they use their employee status to crack mall security and rob stores blind just before Christmas. However, there’s one flaw to this plan — Willie is a bitter, foul-mouthed and perpetually grouchy alcoholic who doesn’t care for kids, and it’s all he can do to keep himself from getting fired while on the job. The mall’s manager (John Ritter, in his last film appearance) is certain something’s wrong with the Santa he’s hired, so he asks the mall’s chief of security (Bernie Mac) to do some research on Willie. Meanwhile, one of the kids Willie is forced to talk to becomes a regular customer; overweight, awkward, and the frequent target of bullies, the boy manages to arouse something like sympathy from Willie, who tries to give him some advice and develops something vaguely resembling Christmas sprit along the way. Bad Santa was directed by Terry Zwigoff, who enjoyed previous success with Crumb and Ghost World. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Her philandering husband (Charles Korvin) isn’t too worried about her violent headaches and fever, especially as he is carrying on behind her back with Sheila’s younger sister (Dorothy Malone). Sheila’s condition worsens, however, and she ends up at a local clinic, where she infects a young girl (Beverly Washburn) who crosses her path. The police and public health authorities get called in after the girl falls ill, and begin desperately trying to find the source of the girl’s infection — meanwhile, Sheila is hiding out from the federal men following her over the diamonds, and also realizes that her husband is trying to cheat her. She tries to confront her sister, and then seeks shelter from her low-life brother Sid (Whit Bissell), who runs a flop-house on skid row. Sheila finally realizes what is happening to her, shooting her way past the doctor (William Bishop) trying to help her — she may not live long, but she wants to last long enough to catch up with her husband. Meanwhile, the police and the doctor try to reach her in time to find out where she’s been and who she’s seen and spoken to, before that information dies with her. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi Two of a Kind Cardsharp Edmond O’Brien gets more than he bargained for when he links up with con artists Lizabeth Scott and Alexander Knox. The trio plot to fleece a wealthy couple out of ten million dollars by having O’Brien pose as the couple’s long-lost son. When the husband (Griff Barnett) refuses to change his will, Scott and Knox plan to bump him off. O’Brien may be a crook, but he’s no murderer, so he balks at the plan and confesses the scam to the elderly couple–prompting Knox to add O’Brien to his list of potential victims. When Scott decides to pull out of the plan as well, Knox is run out of town, leaving the girl with O’Brien–truly “two of a kind,” who’ll be able to line up suckers elsewhere. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi The Glass Wall This drama chronicles the exploits of Peter, a European desperate to enter the United States. Because he can’t be granted asylum due to the lack of proper papers, he resorts to jumping ship and sneaking in. In the Big Apple, he is assisted by two people who know about his past. Peter helped the man then and hopes that he will now vouch for Peter in his attempts to obtain legal papers by showing that he was instrumental in aiding underground activities during the war to help the Allied cause. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi Bad for Each Other The film Bad For Each Other, together with stars Charlton Heston and Lizabeth Scot |

Handle with Care [LP] $23.98 Nuclear Assault truly arrived on 1989′s Handle With Care — a record which stands the test of time as one of the East Coast’s best offerings to the thrash metal genre. The development displayed on their previous effort, Survive, was honed to an even tighter focus here, resulting in the band’s best and most powerful album. Outstanding thrashers like “Critical Mass,” “F: (Wake Up),” and “When Freedom Dies” lead the way with the same bile and fury fans had grown accustomed to. But the band also displays an increasing appreciation for melody and straight-ahead metal riffs on tracks like “Inherited Hell” and the epic “Trail of Tears” — no doubt upsetting those who preferred the rawer hardcore elements in their sound. And even though John Connely and Danny Lilker remain the band’s prime creative forces, drummer Glen Evans also contributes some killer material (“Emergency” and “Search & Seizure”), making Handle With Care Nuclear Assault’s truest band effort. Too bad this only presaged the splintering which would occur on 1991′s disappointing (and appropriately titled) Out of Order. (Lilker’s insistence on including pointless noise bursts spanning mere seconds, like “Funky Noise” and “Mother’s Day,” didn’t help matters any.) Still, Handle With Care is a perfect introduction, and pretty much all one will ever need from Nuclear Assault. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia & John Franck |

Bad Girls of Film Noir, Vol. 2 - $19.99 Includes:Night Editor (1946) One Girl’s Confession (1953) Women’s Prison (1955) Over-Exposed (1956) Night Editor Inspired by the radio program of the same name, Night Editor features Charles D. Brown as the editor of the New York Star. In flashback, the editor tells the tale of police lieutenant William Gargan, who forsakes his happy home life for the love of no-good society dame Janis Carter. Both Gargan and Carter begin cheating on their respective spouses, and while on a romantic rendezvous the couple witnesses a murder. They can’t report the crime without revealing their own infidelities, a dilemma which leads to blackmail, double-crossing and a second murder attempt. A twist ending caps this snappy little 65-minute morality play. The script of Night Editor was based on the story “Inside Story” by Scott Littleton, previously dramatized on the Night Editor radio series. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi One Girl’s Confession Filmmaker Hugo Haas unfolds his usual cautionary “old man-young woman” story in One Girl’s Confession. Perennial Haas leading lady Cleo Moore stars as Mary Adams, whose first step on the road to ruin is a $25,000 robbery. Mary hides the money, then confesses to the crime, secure in the belief that she can dig up the loot upon her release from prison. A few years later, Mary is placed on probation, whereupon she takes a waitressing job at the seaside eatery run by Dragomie Damitrof (Haas). A chronic gambler, Damitrof is on the verge of losing his caf? when Mary offers to loan him money. When Damitrof begins spending cash like a sailor, Mary is convinced that he’s located her hidden loot, whereupon she hits him on the noggin and leaves him for dead. Deciding that the money is too much trouble, Mary donates the rest of the loot to an orphanage and confesses to Damitrof’s murder. But that’s not the end of the story …. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Women’s Prison With the exception of the vastly superior Caged, Columbia’s Women’s Prison was the quintessential “babes behind bars” drama of the 1950s. Ida Lupino (who else?) stars as Amelia VanZant, the sadistic supervisor of the titular prison. Unable to establish any sort of relationship with a man, Amelia takes it out on her long-suffering inmates. When prison psychiatrist Clark (Howard Duff) tries to improve conditions for the women, he too is targetted for destruction by the vituperous Ms. VanZant. The cast includes such perennial “hard-boiled dames” as Jan Sterling, Cleo Moore, Audrey Totter, Phyllis Thaxter, Gertrude Michael and Mae Clarke. Not taken very seriously in the first place, Women’s Prison was elevated to the level of “high camp” by youthful film buffs of the 1960s and 1970s. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Over-Exposed This forgettable piece of 1950s sleaze stars Cleo Moore as a voluptuous blonde who becomes a successful commercial photographer. Richard Crenna, making a major break from his TV image as Our Miss Brooks’ Walter Denton, plays a reporter who takes a special interest in Moore’s care |

The Care Bears Movie – Fullscreen Dubbed Subtitle $12.99 In a film designed to bring smiles to the post-toddler set on up to perhaps their seven-year-old siblings, this animated story by Arna Selznick (only the third woman in cinematic history to direct a full-length animated feature) is about the popular Care Bears. These loving creatures inhabit a realm in the clouds called Care-A-Lot, and their purpose in life is to get the humans down below to share their good feelings with each other. They watch over human children with large telescopes and help those children who need help. The Care Bears have their work cut out for them, because Nicolas, a lonely magician’s assistant, is about to fall under the evil influence of a bad spirit who lives in an ancient magic book — it seems Nicolas will do just about anything for friends. Aside from Nicolas, Kim (Cree Summer) and Jason (Sunny Besen Thracher) are in trouble because they are starting not to trust people after suffering many disappointments. Mickey Rooney is the voice of Mr. Cherrywood, the owner of an orphanage. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi |
