Obama Health Care Battle

Is this “health care reform” just a trick to distract Obama’s opponents away from something else entirely?

It seems to me that Obama could have easily passed this at any point in the past year. Prior to Scott Brown, he had a supermajority in the Senate and a 75-seat advantage in the House. Yet he kept things in constant suspense for a year. Is this all a feint? Is he just distracting Republicans with “health care”, and keeping all their resources focused on it, while he does all these other things (auto company takeovers, bank bailouts, tax hikes, etc).

This whole thing feels like the end of the Lord of the Rings. Aragorn starts a huge (ultimately fake) battle at the gates of Mordor so that Sauron will take his eye off of Frodo and the ring. Is Obama doing that? Is he starting a “health care” fight to distract the country from his real goals?

They currently don’t have the votes, in spite of Nazi Pelosi’s claim. If they had the votes, it would already have been brought to the floor.

Damaged Care - $24.99 Damaged Care is fact-based drama about the managed care industry. It originally aired on Showtime. Laura Dern co-produced and stars in the film as Dr. Linda Peeno, who gives up her career after earning a medical degree, so that she can take care of her family. Her husband, Doug (James LeGros), is a successful OB/GYN. In 1987, when their children (from previous marriages) have gotten a little older, Linda decides to return to work, and gets a job as a medical reviewer at Humana Health Care. Patient claims that aren’t approved by the UR (utilization review) nurses are forwarded to the doctors on the medical review team, who, Linda learns, are expected to rubber-stamp the UR nurses’ decisions. Every decision Linda makes to cover a patient’s care is questioned, sometimes angrily. The head of the UR department, Cheryl Griffith (Regina King) befriends Linda, and shares her unhappiness with the system. Linda has a crisis of conscience when she gets a call about an emergency heart transplant that needs immediate approval. Pressured by the company, she finds an out in the employer’s healthcare booklet, and denies the claim. The patient dies. Eventually, Linda quits Humana (angering Doug), and Cheryl gets her a job at a smaller, non-profit company, Brothers Managed Care. The system is pretty much the same, though, and Linda comes into conflict with the cost-conscious head of the UR nurses, Gemma Coombs (Michelle Clunie). When a nurse (Suki Kaiser) is stricken with a series of crippling strokes, Linda takes a stand against the company to get her the treatment she needs. Eventually, Dr. Linda Peeno gets out of the system, and becomes an outspoken critic of the abuses of the health care industry. The Battle of the Sexes - $19.99 A remake of a 1914 D.W. Griffith potboiler, The Battle of the Sexes is a highly entertaining, if cautionary, tale of a middle-aged family man, J.C. Judson (Jean Hersholt), who despite his devotion to wife and offspring falls for what is obviously a gold digger, Marie Skinner (Phyllis Haver). When Mrs. Judson (Belle Bennett) and her grown children, Ruth (Sally O’Neil) and Billy (William Bakewell), confront him with the awful truth, Judson refuses to give up his inamorata and instead moves out of the home. A desperate Ruth, gun in hand, seeks a showdown with Marie, but their confrontation is interrupted by the latter’s handsome but feckless boyfriend, Babe Winsor (Don Alvarado), who in drunkenness begins to court the pretty Ruth. Judson walks in on this tender scene and immediately employs a double standard, condemning his daughter for bringing shame upon his house. A violent argument between a jealous Marie and Babe forces him to face the truth, however, and a chagrined Judson returns to home and hearth, begging for forgiveness. Narrated by Anthony Veiller, Battle for Russia is designed to clarify the history of America’s Russian allies to military and civilian audiences alike, and to emphasize the importance of Russo-American cooperation in defeating the Nazi juggernaut. The film’s highlight is the siege of Stalingrad, alternately terrifying and awe-inspiring. Battle for the Sun $22.99 Placebo made a name for themselves playing tough alt-rock with a glammy, sexually provocative swagger. For the their first album since 2006′s MEDS, the group pulled from the many facets of their sound through the years and created what is perhaps the consummate Placebo release. Tracks alternate between smart, angsty guitar-driven rock (“Kitty Litter,” the title track) and anthemic, hook-heavy Britpop (“Ashtray Heart,” “Bright Lights”), with touches of dark electronica and lush synth textures thrown in. While the band continues to explore themes of hard living, there’s also considerable self-examination taking place here, with alternatives to the rock & roll lifestyle explicitly laid out on the table. BATTLE FOR THE SUN finds Placebo continuing to evolve as a band in more ways than one.
