Damaged Care - $24.99 Damaged Care is fact-based drama about the managed care industry. It originally aired on Showtime. Laura Dern co-produced and stars in the film as Dr. Linda Peeno, who gives up her career after earning a medical degree, so that she can take care of her family. Her husband, Doug (James LeGros), is a successful OB/GYN. In 1987, when their children (from previous marriages) have gotten a little older, Linda decides to return to work, and gets a job as a medical reviewer at Humana Health Care. Patient claims that aren’t approved by the UR (utilization review) nurses are forwarded to the doctors on the medical review team, who, Linda learns, are expected to rubber-stamp the UR nurses’ decisions. Every decision Linda makes to cover a patient’s care is questioned, sometimes angrily. The head of the UR department, Cheryl Griffith (Regina King) befriends Linda, and shares her unhappiness with the system. Linda has a crisis of conscience when she gets a call about an emergency heart transplant that needs immediate approval. Pressured by the company, she finds an out in the employer’s healthcare booklet, and denies the claim. The patient dies. Eventually, Linda quits Humana (angering Doug), and Cheryl gets her a job at a smaller, non-profit company, Brothers Managed Care. The system is pretty much the same, though, and Linda comes into conflict with the cost-conscious head of the UR nurses, Gemma Coombs (Michelle Clunie). When a nurse (Suki Kaiser) is stricken with a series of crippling strokes, Linda takes a stand against the company to get her the treatment she needs. Eventually, Dr. Linda Peeno gets out of the system, and becomes an outspoken critic of the abuses of the health care industry. Dern’s mother, Diane Ladd, and Adam Arkin also appear in the film. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi |

Four Days in July - $14.99 The setting of Mike Leigh’s Four Days in July is Belfast in the mid-’80s, just before the annual July 12th march of The Orangemen to celebrate the 17th century victory of the Protestant William of Orange over the Catholic King John II. Two couples prepare to have their first child. Collette (Brid Brennan) and Eugene (Desmond McAleer) are Catholic, while Lorraine (Paula Hamilton) and Billy (Charles Lawson) are Protestant. Eugene is injured and awaiting a disability check, so he has time to dote on his pregnant wife. Billy is in the military, and when he’s not manning checkpoints, he hangs out with his fellow soldiers, Big Billy (Brian Hogg) and Little Billy (Adrian Gordon). On the 11th, as the celebrations and bonfires are being prepared, Brendan (Shane Connaughton, who later co-wrote the script for My Left Foot) comes by to fix Collette and Eugene’s toilet. Then an old friend of Brendan’s, Dixie (Stephen Rea), comes by to clean the building’s windows. The four of them sit around for a while and chat. The upcoming marches are a sore spot that is briefly alluded to, and Eugene reveals that his injuries were suffered at the hands of the British military. Lorraine goes with Billy to a bonfire, where there’s drinking, singing, and high spirits. The next morning, both women go into labor and are brought to the same hospital. In the waiting room, Eugene strikes up a conversation with Billy. Four Days in July was the last film Leigh made for the BBC and one of the first films scored by composer Rachel Portman. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi |

Live Blueswailing July ’64 [LP] $22.98 The Yardbirds: Keith Relf (vocals, harmonica); Eric Clapton, Chris Dreja (guitar); Paul Samwell-Smith (bass); James McCarty (drums).Recorded live in July 1964.This recently discovered seven-song set is an awe-inspiring live recording of the Yardbirds before their official debut, Five Live Yardbirds. As a document, it adds considerable weight to the band’s early rep that has been passed into legend. It also rewrites history: this short set blows Five Live away both in terms of performance and sound quality. This is the second incarnation of the band, with Chris Dreja, Jim McCarty, Keith Relf, Paul Samwell-Smith, and new guitarist Eric Clapton (who had replaced Andrew “Top” Topham). The music here roars, screams, howls, growls, and bleeds white-boy British blues; it is blistering in its raw intensity, with covers of Chuck Berry’s “Too Much Monkey Business” and the standard “Smokestack Lightning.” The band’s trademark “rave-up” antics are abundant here (check out “She’s So Respectable”), and in the closer — one of the most startling rock versions of “The Sky Is Crying” on record — the listener gets the clearest picture yet of Clapton as an early and worthy guitar hero. His playing is so inspired and full of razor-sharp turnarounds and knotty arpeggios, one has to wonder what was left for him to accomplish even then. The energy here is crackling, dangerous, and woolly. Anyone interested in vintage garage or modern garage rock should check this out, as it rivals most of what comes out of today’s “raw and raucous” scene as well. Indeed, history has been rewritten. ~ Thom Jurek |

Health & Strength $14.99 In the veritable faceless crowd of DJs that flooded the reggae scene in the 1970s and 1980s, most of the best and most distinctive ones spawned a host of imitators. Only Prince Far I, with his gravelly, stentorian voice and strict spiritual focus, remained truly unique — in part because few could have imitated him if they’d wanted to, and even fewer would have dared try. Health and Strength was one of the albums he cut for Virgin’s Front Line imprint in the late ’70s; unlike the others, this one was shelved and eventually lost until a cassette copy surfaced in 1997. The cassette had been made from the original master tapes and was of surprisingly high quality; when On-U Sound’s Adrian Sherwood got his hands on it, he cleaned it up a little and released it on his own Pressure Sounds reissue imprint. The results are truly spectacular. Featuring several rare examples of Prince Far I’s singing as well as the chanting (or “toasting”) for which he was famous, Health and Strength stands with his best work. Highlights include the apocalyptic “Frontline Speech,” the admirably practical “Health Warning” (chanted over the rhythm to Gregory Isaacs’ “Sacrifice”), and “Clean Hands Pure Heart.” Essential. ~ Rick Anderson |

Christmas in July – Fullscreen Subtitle Dolby $14.99 This modest Preston Sturges comedy stars Dick Powell as an office clerk dreaming of better things and Ellen Drew as his more pragmatic girlfriend. Powell convinces himself that his fortune will be made if he can win a slogan contest sponsored by a coffee company. Powell’s contribution: “If you can’t sleep at night, it isn’t the coffee, it’s the bunk!” Three of Powell’s fellow workers decide to have some fun with him; they fake a telegram which announces that he’s won the contest. The deception snowballs to the point that even the head of the coffee firm (Raymond Walburn) labors under the misapprehension that Powell has won. When the painful truth is revealed, Powell finds himself broke (because of all the creature comforts he’s bought) and jobless, but at least he’s retained the love of his wife. A cute deus ex machina to the story appears in the person of William Demarest, the foreman of the “jury” that is judging the slogan contest. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Born on the Fourth of July – Widescreen Dubbed Subtitle AC3 $12.99 The second of three films by co-writer/director Oliver Stone to explore the effects of the Vietnam War (Platoon and Heaven and Earth are the others), Born On The Fourth Of July tells the true story of Ron Kovic (Tom Cruise), a patriotic, All-American small town athlete who shocks his family by enlisting with the Marines to fight in the Vietnam War. Once he is overseas, however, Kovic’s gung-ho enthusiasm turns to horror and confusion when he accidentally kills one of his own men in a firefight. His downfall is furthered by a bullet wound that leaves him paralyzed from the chest down. He returns home, spends an appalling, nightmarish stint in a veterans’ hospital, and follows an increasingly disillusioned and fragmented path that ultimately leaves him drunk and dissolute in Mexico. However, Kovic somehow turns himself around and pulls his life together, becoming an outspoken anti-war activist in the process. The film is long but emotionally powerful; many consider it Stone’s best work and Cruise’s best performance. Both were nominated for Oscars, as was the film itself, but only Stone, who co-wrote the film with Kovic from the latter’s book, won for Best Director. ~ Don Kaye, Rovi |
