Damaged Care - $24.99 Damaged Care is fact-based drama about the managed care industry. It originally aired on Showtime. Laura Dern co-produced and stars in the film as Dr. Linda Peeno, who gives up her career after earning a medical degree, so that she can take care of her family. Her husband, Doug (James LeGros), is a successful OB/GYN. In 1987, when their children (from previous marriages) have gotten a little older, Linda decides to return to work, and gets a job as a medical reviewer at Humana Health Care. Patient claims that aren’t approved by the UR (utilization review) nurses are forwarded to the doctors on the medical review team, who, Linda learns, are expected to rubber-stamp the UR nurses’ decisions. Every decision Linda makes to cover a patient’s care is questioned, sometimes angrily. The head of the UR department, Cheryl Griffith (Regina King) befriends Linda, and shares her unhappiness with the system. Linda has a crisis of conscience when she gets a call about an emergency heart transplant that needs immediate approval. Pressured by the company, she finds an out in the employer’s healthcare booklet, and denies the claim. The patient dies. Eventually, Linda quits Humana (angering Doug), and Cheryl gets her a job at a smaller, non-profit company, Brothers Managed Care. The system is pretty much the same, though, and Linda comes into conflict with the cost-conscious head of the UR nurses, Gemma Coombs (Michelle Clunie). When a nurse (Suki Kaiser) is stricken with a series of crippling strokes, Linda takes a stand against the company to get her the treatment she needs. Eventually, Dr. Linda Peeno gets out of the system, and becomes an outspoken critic of the abuses of the health care industry. Odyssey 5 (Japan) $39.99 DJ Onyx is on the decks for this installment and the ear for progressive trance offers a competent range of uplifting tunes with the minimal amount of fuss. Unfortunately, such a shy interpretation of a normally unifying, anthemic genre succeeds far less than one expects. Pulsedriver IV’s “Kiss That Sound” demonstrates the intense acid house DNA in the bloodstream of modern trance, Kaycee’s “Love Stimulation” incorporates almost two-step simplicity, Paffendorf does a comical trance take on the theme to The Terminator, but for the most part DJ Onyx keeps it too tame and protected for many other uses. There are few changes of pace. A lack of unconventional deck skills. Odyssey 5 is not a jilting mishmash of random tracks, it’s a compilation that’s too cohesive for its own good. ~ Dean Carlson |

Solomon Northup’s Odyssey - $14.99 Half Slave, Half Free is the reissue title for African-American director Gordon Parks’ TV movie Solomon Northup’s Odyssey. Based on the autobiography Twelve Years a Slave, the film relates the story of Solomon Northup, a black freedman who, in 1841, was kidnapped in Washington D.C. and sold into slavery. Avery Brooks stars as Northup, having spent a dozen years’ servitude in Louisiana before managing his escape. Northup’s own written words bespeak a rebellious spirit not far removed from the firebrand freedom fighters of the ’60s. Curiously, director Parks downplays this in favor of sentimentality. The planet is sold to an evil despot named Kress, and it is up to the kindly Professor Maury and his ragtag band of human and robot friends to reclaim the planet from Kress and his cyborg army. Familiar faces include Gianni Garko, Malisa Longo, and Chris Avram, veterans of numerous European thrillers. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi Prisoners of the Lost Universe This low-budget film is about a scientist (Kenneth Hendel) and two other people (Kay Lenz and Richard Hatch), in the wrong place at the wrong time, who are transported to another world in another dimension when an earthquake occurs just as the scientist is experimenting with his “matter” transmitter. As the transmitter beeps and flashes, the trio end up in the strange world of Vonya (which looks very much like the African plains where this film was shot, and where everyone speaks English). Chinese Odyssey 2002 – Widescreen Subtitle $19.99 Chinese Odyssey 2002, produced by Wong Kar-Wai, is writer-director Jeff Lau’s energetic parody of Chinese kung fu epics, with a bit of Shakespeare thrown in. Chang Chen (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) plays the Emperor, who, desperate for the free-spirited life of a wanderer, tries to escape from the royal palace with his sister, the Princess (Faye Wong, little seen since starring in Wong’s Chungking Express). He’s caught and returned to his angry mother by the royal guards, but the Princess, disguised as a man, manages to escape. Meanwhile, King Bully (Tony Leung, who also starred in Chungking Express) has returned to his hometown, where he is widely despised for his bullying ways, to run a restaurant with his tomboy sister, Phoenix (Vicki Zhao of Shaolin Soccer). They have a very close relationship. In fact, King Bully mistakenly believes that he can read his sister’s mind. When the Princess arrives in town, King Bully finds himself drawn to her, but, believing she’s a man, decides that his attraction is some kind of empathy with Phoenix. King Bully and the Princess spend a night eating and drinking together. In the morning, the Princess leaves. King Bully, determined that the Princess will marry Phoenix, vows to bring the charismatic young “man” back. She does return, but soon realizes that the royal guards are following her. Meanwhile, the Emperor convinces his mother to let him leave the palace to go look for the Princess. By the time he gets to town, the Princess has been carted off by the royal guards, with King Bully in hot pursuit. He’s immediately attracted to Phoenix. More confusion ensues. Chinese Odyssey 2002 had its U.S. premiere at the 2003 Tribeca Film Festival. The film was awarded Best Film, and Faye Wong Best Actress, by the Hong Kong Film Critics Society. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi |
