Convinced despite much evidence to the contrary that they’re prime secret agent material, both men keep taking service exams in an effort to win promotion. Caught cheating on their latest round of tests, Austin and Emmett expect to be fired but are instead made full field agents and ushered into intense training. Little do they know that it’s all a ruse and that they’re about to be dumped in Pakistan to throw Russian spies off the scent of two real agents with an important clandestine assignment. A spoof of the “road” pictures popularized by Bing Crosby and Bob Hope, the film features a cameo by the latter as his golf-playing self. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

New Riders Of The Purple Sage

New Riders Of The Purple Sage

$6.99

In the early 1970s, with the likes of the Band, the Grateful Dead, and Crosby, Stills & Nash all turning away from the orgy of the senses that was the ’60s, toward a simpler, more deeply rooted place, country rock became de rigeur. Shortly after the Dead made their move from acid tests to hoedowns, their pals Dave Torbert and John “Marmaduke” Dawson followed suit. Torbert and Dawson were the heart of New Riders of the Purple Sage, aided on their debut album by Dead buddies Jerry Garcia and Mickey Hart. There’s a still-slightly-stoned, morning-after feel here that works well with the New Riders’ low-key style. Their cowboy/hippie/outlaw ethic is espoused on the likes of “Last Lonely Eagle” and “Glendale Train” as horse trails meet Haight-Ashbury in an agreeably ramshackle manner.

Clark Johnson’s big-screen adaptation of the 1970s television series S.W.A.T. stars Colin Farrell as Jim Street, a young special weapons and tactics team member who, in the film’s opening sequence, is demoted after his hothead partner Jeremy Renner shoots a hostage while trying to kill her captor. In need of good press, the higher-ups call in SWAT expert Hondo Harrelson (Samuel L. Jackson) to put together an elite team that can bring some luster back to the badge. He chooses Street, veteran T.J. (Josh Charles), and tough single mother Chris Sanchez (Michelle Rodriguez). The new team survives a series of tests before hitting the streets. Their first big assignment involves transporting an international criminal (Olivier Martinez) to federal authorities. The criminal had offered a hundred million dollars to anyone who can bust him out. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

Following in his father’s footsteps must have been difficult enough, but Johann Strauss, Jr. made a name for himself, one that stands up to the rigorous tests of history. His work in nineteenth century light composition refined the waltz to such a degree that it was included in orchestra recitals as well as at ballroom dances.Volume 6 of Naxos’s salute to the younger Strauss’s music focuses predominantly on his waltzes and polkas. Complete with detailed notes describing the history of each piece, the album contains excellent selections from the Marco Polo Strauss Edition. The CSSR State Philharmonic and Slovak State Philharmonic Orchestra perform admirably, using Strauss’s original instrumentation wherever possible. That Johann Strauss, Jr.’s popularity continues is no surprise–his eminently danceable melodies float and bound lightheartedly. Even the casual music listener will be inclined to dance to these waltzes and polkas. The “Waltz King” himself would no doubt be pleased.

Researchers at the University of California at Irvine found that scores on intelligence tests rose by an average of eight to nine points immediately after subjects listened to the music of Mozart. It has also been determined that music helps infants develop both physically and mentally. This recording is comprised of music by Mozart that may well assist in the development of young minds and bodies. The recording features Mozart’s music in stellar performances drawn from the Sony archives. From the boisterous overture to ‘The Marriage of Figaro’ to the gentle Andante from the Piano Concerto No. 21, the breathtaking spectrum of Mozart’s music is presented for infants and adults. While the producers of the recording make no promises of increased IQ scores, there is no doubt that the music will delight all listeners. Featuring legendary performers like Glenn Gould, Pinchas Zukerman, and George Szell, this recording is also a great vehicle for sampling the master’s music. Whether for infant, parent, or blissfully single adult, this is a glorious compilation.

Director Dan Ireland adapts writer Robert Bazell’s autobiographical novel Her-2 to the screen with this made-for-Lifetime drama concerning UCLA oncologist and researcher Dr. Dennis Slamon, creator of the promising breast cancer drug Herceptin. Convinced that his revolutionary drug could effectively switch off cancer cells for women with tumors of the Her-2+ (Human Epidermal growth factor Receptor 2-positive) without radiation treatment, Dr. Slamon raised funds for his research with the help of Ron Perelman, Lilly Tartikoff, and the extended Revlon family. Later, as Dr. Slamon attempted to cut through the bureaucratic red tape and get his drug approved, a number of brave patients who had volunteered for the clinical tests of Herceptin sadly succumbed to their cancer. But all hope wasn’t lost, because in 1998 the FDA finally approved the use of Herceptin to treat breast cancer, giving hope to millions of women and their families across the country. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Daniel Calparsoro’s Guerreros is set in the Balkans in the wake of the ethnic conflict between the Serbs and the Kosovo Albanians that prompted NATO military intervention in 1999. A group of young Spanish army engineers is stationed in a Kosovo village to help the Albanians recover from the war’s devastation. The unit is sent on a mission to restore electricity to a small town in hostile territory, but their operation is derailed when they get caught up in the fighting between Serb and Albanian paramilitaries. Struggling to stay neutral, the peacekeepers find themselves fighting for survival as they scamper around the Balkan countryside searching for a way back to headquarters. Their descent into the quagmire of ethnic fighting tests the limits of their idealism and underscores the moral complexities posed by humanitarian intervention. This polished actioner screened at the 2002 Toronto International Film Festival. ~ Elbert Ventura, Rovi

A Man Called Horse stars Richard Harris as Lord John Morgan, an English peer cast somewhat adrift in the American West. Captured by Sioux Indians, Lord Morgan is at first targeted for quick extinction, but the tribesmen sense that he is worthy of survival. The Englishman passes many of the necessary tests that will permit him to become a member of the tribe, the most grueling of which (and the one used most extensively in the film’s advertising) is the Sun Vow Initiation. That’s where his lordship is hung from the roof of a huge teepee with hooks through his pectoral muscles. Much of the dialogue is spoken in the Sioux language, though the film’s much-vaunted “historical accuracy” is not altogether consistent, as witness the casting of British stage luminary Judith Anderson as Sioux woman Buffalo Cow Head. A Man Called Horse spawned warrant two sequels. Originally rated “GP” in 1970, it has since been re-rated R by the MPAA. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

To test these theories, scientists construct a small pyramid near the Great Pyramid of Giza. The construction is supervised by Egyptologist Mark Lehner and stonemason Roger Hopkins of television’s This Old House. ~ Thomas Carpenter, Rovi NOVA: Secrets of Lost Empires – Obelisk This television documentary is one in a four-part series that tests theories regarding the architectural achievements of ancient civilizations. Based on archaeological evidence, scientists conduct physical reconstructions of these theories to see if they would actually have worked. The series is co-produced by Nova and BBC. In this installment, theories about how ancient civilizations cut, moved, and constructed giant stone obelisks are tested. Viewers travel to Aswan, where these obelisks were cut from the quarries, to attempt to reconstruct the process with a 35-foot-long hunk of rock using what they think may have been the same techniques used by the ancients. ~ Thomas Carpenter, Rovi
