Damaged Care - $24.99 Damaged Care is fact-based drama about the managed care industry. It originally aired on Showtime. Laura Dern co-produced and stars in the film as Dr. Linda Peeno, who gives up her career after earning a medical degree, so that she can take care of her family. Her husband, Doug (James LeGros), is a successful OB/GYN. In 1987, when their children (from previous marriages) have gotten a little older, Linda decides to return to work, and gets a job as a medical reviewer at Humana Health Care. Patient claims that aren’t approved by the UR (utilization review) nurses are forwarded to the doctors on the medical review team, who, Linda learns, are expected to rubber-stamp the UR nurses’ decisions. Every decision Linda makes to cover a patient’s care is questioned, sometimes angrily. The head of the UR department, Cheryl Griffith (Regina King) befriends Linda, and shares her unhappiness with the system. Linda has a crisis of conscience when she gets a call about an emergency heart transplant that needs immediate approval. Pressured by the company, she finds an out in the employer’s healthcare booklet, and denies the claim. The patient dies. Eventually, Linda quits Humana (angering Doug), and Cheryl gets her a job at a smaller, non-profit company, Brothers Managed Care. The system is pretty much the same, though, and Linda comes into conflict with the cost-conscious head of the UR nurses, Gemma Coombs (Michelle Clunie). When a nurse (Suki Kaiser) is stricken with a series of crippling strokes, Linda takes a stand against the company to get her the treatment she needs. Eventually, Dr. Linda Peeno gets out of the system, and becomes an outspoken critic of the abuses of the health care industry. Dern’s mother, Diane Ladd, and Adam Arkin also appear in the film. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi |

Jamaica Inn – B&W $3.99 Alfred Hitchcock directed this disappointing misfire, memorable solely for the fact is that it is the final film from Hitchcock’s early British period before he left for the Hollywood studio system and David O. Selznick. In the England of the 1800s, a group of ruthless smugglers, led by Sir Humphrey Pengallon (Charles Laughton), prey on ships by blacking out warning signals. When the ships crash on the rocks, the nefarious group loots the remains and kills the sailors. The plot kicks in when the beautiful orphan Mary Yelland (Maureen O’Hara) goes to visit her uncle Joss Merlyn (Leslie Banks) at a creepy hotel called the Jamaica Inn, the home of the gang of smugglers. Mary doesn’t realize that Uncle Joss is one of them. Meanwhile, Lloyd’s of London sends one of their ablest men, Jem Trahearne (Robert Newton), to investigate the recurring shipwrecks. Jem checks in to the Jamaica Inn, and when the coven of smugglers finds out who he is, they capture him and attempt to kill him. But Mary comes to his rescue and saves him. Through the inn, the smugglers try to recapture Jem — along with Mary. Thrown together by dire circumstances, the two fall in love. Meanwhile, all the shenanigans occurring at the Jamaica Inn appear to be driving Pengallon insane. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi |

Miss Jamaica (Bonus Tracks) (Japan) $49.99 Her appearance on Beenie Man’s “Dude” made the song an instant dancehall classic, and now the talented, charisma-overflowing Ms. Thing turns that song’s promise into a smoking debut full-length. When it comes to Jamaican riddims, Miss Jamaica grabs the best while coming up with some amazing new sounds of its own. The “Dude” riddim shows up again, this time in the opening “Regular.” This talented sing-jay doesn’t bother quoting “Dude” again over her flagship riddim, she’s too talented and hungry to show it, and “Regular” is proof. “I Want It All” is not only her credo, but also another killer track. Japanese strings spice-up “Jump Up & Rail,” “Get That Money” is the Funkadelic-styled singalong you don’t expect, and “Muscle Tight” is the catchiest jingle Kegel exercises could hope for. But “Muscle Tight” is also the best example of the album’s great blunder. Like her spiritual guide, Lady Saw, Ms. Thing is about sweaty sex, slack, and naming body parts. Who knows what audience they were thinking of, but Sequence — a label that’s treated dancehall fans to some great, respect-filled compilations in the past — has decided to edit the tracks making blue numbers like “Muscle Tight” sound ridiculous. It’s like making Vanity 6 wear turtleneck sweaters or telling 50 Cent not to mention crime. Even with the horrible lapse in judgment, Miss Jamaica is too good not to support, and if you passed on it you’d miss two of the most quirky and stunning tracks to come out of the dancehall in some time. The fresher-than-fresh “Love Guide” is stuttering electro evidence that Dizzee Rascal albums have invaded Jamaica, and “Sweet Soca Music” makes the brilliant move of copping the same Rolling Stones’ riff the Verve did. It’s a closing one-two punch that lays you flat after an already thrill-filled album. Even with the editing, Miss Jamaica is crucial, but it could have been classic. ~ David Jeffries |

Jamaican Music & Soul: Made in Jamaica/The Journey of the Lion - $24.99 Includes:The Journey of the Lion (1992) Made in Jamaica (2006) The Journey of the Lion No synopsis available. Made in Jamaica French writer-director J?r?me Laperrousaz’s documentary Made in Jamaica opens with the tragic yet all-too-familiar murder of a reggae superstar – Bogle – and his celebrity-studded funeral, attended by multiple generations of Jamaican musicians. The film then springboards into a broad and enormously ambitious, loosely-knit exploration of the reggae subculture in all of its facets. Laperrousaz intercuts original interviews and live concert footage (often filmed on the shores and streets of Kingston, where reggae was born) with such giants as Third World, Gregory Isaacs (who pays tribute to Bogle), Bunny Wailer, Toots, Beres Hammond and Capleton. The discussions frequently trace and highlight the performers’ various influences (from the awareness of centuries-old Jamaican enslavement to on-the-spot enjoyment of the sounds and rhythms); the performances exude these sources in every note. Throughout, Lapperousaz and the featured performers repeatedly define reggae by cutting straight to its emotional core, and pay unbridled tribute to the culture and nation that produced it. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi |

Jamaica Super Dub Session $14.99 As with many of the semi-anonymous dub sets that were recorded at the Bronx studio of producer Lloyd “Bullwackie” Barnes and released on his Wackies label, the music on this one was played primarily by members of the New York-based studio band Itopia, augmented by Jamaican legends Leroy Sibbles (former bassist and bandleader for the Heptones) and an uncredited Jackie Mittoo (king of the organ instrumental). As always with Wackies releases, the grooves are dark and mystical, the bass heavy but not overpowering, and the playing exquisite. The dub version of Sibbles’ arrangement of the Lionel Richie classic “Truly” is worth the price of admission by itself, and the spare, nyahbinghi-flavored “Bag Man Dub” is another highlight. These CD reissues have been marred by shoddy packaging — in each case, the digipack artwork consists entirely of photocopies of the front and back of the original LP jacket, with no additional notes or, in some cases, musician credits — but it’s such a relief to have these classic recordings back in circulation that it’s hard to get too bent out of shape over the visual aesthetics. ~ Rick Anderson |

A High Wind in Jamaica – Widescreen Pan & Scan $12.99 Based on a novel by Richard Hughes, this drama takes an unusual look at both seafaring pirates and the true nature of children. The Thorntons, a British family living in Jamaica, decide to pull up stakes and sail back to England after Frederick Thornton (Nigel Davenport) and his wife (Isabel Dean) decide that life in the Caribbean is having a negative effect on her children’s sense of order and discipline. While returning home, their ship is attacked by Capt. Chavez (Anthony Quinn), who along with his first mate Zac (James Coburn), begins to loot the ship for valuables. However, in the midst of the confusion of the pirate raid, the Thornton children scurry onto the pirate ship, and it’s not until they’ve left the other ship behind that Chavez and Zac discover that they have new passengers. While most of the pirates are unenthusiastic about having a pack of kids on board, Chavez declares that they must be allowed to stay on board until they can be taken to a safe port. As they get to know each other, Chaven develops a soft spot for the children, especially ten-year-old Emily (Deborah Baxter), but in time, the kids’ mischievous playfulness begins to transform itself into something more sinister. The supporting cast includes Dennis Price, Lila Kedrova, and Gert Frobe. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Primary Colors – Widescreen $12.99 Mike Nichols directed this Elaine May screenplay adapted from the 1996 bestseller by “Anonymous” (Joe Klein), who fictionalized Bill Clinton’s first presidential campaign. In the New Hampshire primary, Governor Jack Stanton (John Travolta) convinces Henry Burton (Adrian Lester), grandson of a respected civil rights pioneer, to become his deputy campaign manager. Stanton’s smart wife Susan (Emma Thompson) always comes through with public support for her philandering husband. The film’s parallel for James Carville is Stanton’s redneck advisor Richard Jemmons (Billy Bob Thornton), who knows every strategy and tactic but worries, “The woman thing, that’s the killer.” Sure enough, problems during the New Hampshire primary include charges of adultery. To get a handle on past peccadillos, Stanton’s staff brings in an old family friend, lesbian Libby Holden (Kathy Bates), who knows how to clean up dirt. Stanton, a strong debater, moves on to Florida and New York. When one opposing candidate drops dead of a heart attack, he’s replaced by Florida’s Governor Fred Picker (Larry Hagman), but Holden holds the skeleton key to the skeleton in Picker’s closet. Just how the Stantons put this information to use reveals whether they are ruthless politicians or inspirational leaders with ideals. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi |
