Prime Suspect 7: The Final Act - $24.99 Produced and aired in 2006, the final, four-hour installment of the 15-year Granada/WGBH television series Prime Suspect — entitled Prime Suspect: The Final Act — nominally continues to follow author Linda La Plante’s literary character, Detective Superintendent Jane Tennison (Helen Mirren), but segues dramatically away from Tennison’s casework and toward incidents and developments from her private life. This alteration reshapes Prime Suspect, in its concluding installment, from a detective mystery program centered around hot-button social issues (child molestation, bigotry, gender bias) into more of a domestic drama with an incidental detective subplot. The tale opens with Tennison poised on the edge of retirement, with only a few weeks of work ahead of her. In her off time, she struggles to care for her dying father (Frank Finlay), and battles her own periodic blackouts, brought on by encroaching alcoholism. The central crime plot involves Tennison’s attempts to pinpoint those responsible for the sudden death of a pregnant teenage schoolgirl and bring the unsavory characters to swift justice. As she investigates, she comes into increasing contact with the girl’s family, and begins to perceive the broken relationship that existed between the victim and her deeply dysfunctional father (Gary Lewis); she also befriends Penny, the best friend of the deceased — a relationship that imparts her with much-needed insight into the case at hand. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi |

Damaged Care - $24.99 Damaged Care is fact-based drama about the managed care industry. It originally aired on Showtime. Laura Dern co-produced and stars in the film as Dr. Linda Peeno, who gives up her career after earning a medical degree, so that she can take care of her family. Her husband, Doug (James LeGros), is a successful OB/GYN. In 1987, when their children (from previous marriages) have gotten a little older, Linda decides to return to work, and gets a job as a medical reviewer at Humana Health Care. Patient claims that aren’t approved by the UR (utilization review) nurses are forwarded to the doctors on the medical review team, who, Linda learns, are expected to rubber-stamp the UR nurses’ decisions. Every decision Linda makes to cover a patient’s care is questioned, sometimes angrily. The head of the UR department, Cheryl Griffith (Regina King) befriends Linda, and shares her unhappiness with the system. Linda has a crisis of conscience when she gets a call about an emergency heart transplant that needs immediate approval. Pressured by the company, she finds an out in the employer’s healthcare booklet, and denies the claim. The patient dies. Eventually, Linda quits Humana (angering Doug), and Cheryl gets her a job at a smaller, non-profit company, Brothers Managed Care. The system is pretty much the same, though, and Linda comes into conflict with the cost-conscious head of the UR nurses, Gemma Coombs (Michelle Clunie). When a nurse (Suki Kaiser) is stricken with a series of crippling strokes, Linda takes a stand against the company to get her the treatment she needs. Eventually, Dr. Linda Peeno gets out of the system, and becomes an outspoken critic of the abuses of the health care industry. Dern’s mother, Diane Ladd, and Adam Arkin also appear in the film. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi |

Handle with Care [LP] $23.98 Nuclear Assault truly arrived on 1989′s Handle With Care — a record which stands the test of time as one of the East Coast’s best offerings to the thrash metal genre. The development displayed on their previous effort, Survive, was honed to an even tighter focus here, resulting in the band’s best and most powerful album. Outstanding thrashers like “Critical Mass,” “F: (Wake Up),” and “When Freedom Dies” lead the way with the same bile and fury fans had grown accustomed to. But the band also displays an increasing appreciation for melody and straight-ahead metal riffs on tracks like “Inherited Hell” and the epic “Trail of Tears” — no doubt upsetting those who preferred the rawer hardcore elements in their sound. And even though John Connely and Danny Lilker remain the band’s prime creative forces, drummer Glen Evans also contributes some killer material (“Emergency” and “Search & Seizure”), making Handle With Care Nuclear Assault’s truest band effort. Too bad this only presaged the splintering which would occur on 1991′s disappointing (and appropriately titled) Out of Order. (Lilker’s insistence on including pointless noise bursts spanning mere seconds, like “Funky Noise” and “Mother’s Day,” didn’t help matters any.) Still, Handle With Care is a perfect introduction, and pretty much all one will ever need from Nuclear Assault. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia & John Franck |

Prime Of My Life $6.99 Personnel includes: Phyllis Hyman, Betty Wright (vocals); Jack Faith (saxophone); Lambchops (piano, synthesizer); Kent Hewitt (piano); Dave Darlington (keyboards, bass); Jim Salamone (keyboards, drums, percussion); Charlie Ernst, Kenny Pollack (keyboards, drum programming); Lester Mendez, Donald Robinson, James Lloyd, Randy Cantor, Curtis Dowd, John Gitlutin, Rhett Lawernce (keyboards); Manny Lopez, Randy Bowalnd, Steve Gordon, Roland Chambers, T.J. Tindall (guitar); Steve Green, Freddie Washington, Jimmy Young (bass); Sonny Emmory, Quinton Joseph, John Robinson, Earl Young (drums).Producers: Nick Martinelli, Kenneth Gamble, Terry Burrus, Gene McDaniels, Marti Sharron, Roland Chambers.Listening to Phyllis Hyman’s 1991 emotional tour de force Prime of My Life is at once a happy and sad experience. Happy because it finds Hyman at a moment when she was not tortured by her inner demons and tragic because it provides an undeniable glimpse into Hyman’s tortured soul and the pending suicide which would materialize four years later. Prime of My Life granted the sophisticated lady her first R&B chart-topper with the saucy “Don’t Wanna Change the World,” which incorporates elements of new jack swing, hip-hop, and early-’90s house, and even features a rare, sexy rap by the songstress herself. The album opens with the jazzy quiet storm hit “When You Get Right Down to It” and features several shimmering, gorgeous ballads, most notably the timeless audience favorite “Meet Me on the Moon,” one of the high points of Hyman’s catalogue, period. Other gems include the light, bittersweet closer “Whatever Happened to Our Love,” “I Can’t Take It Anymore,” which is a sad tune pitted against a happy beat, and the self-assured yet ultimately tragic “Prime of My Life.” One of the true highlights, however, is the over-seven-minutes-in-length “Living in Confusion,” which Hyman belts with unmistakable integrity, growling out the bewildered lyrics with overflowing conviction, and provides more than a glimpse into what was really going on in the singer’s life. Hyman could take an average song and tear through it like a tiger, which is what made her music so appealing. This album is a true gem and proves that the husky-voiced Hyman was a timeless song stylist in a class all her own. [The Japanese version of the album includes a bonus track, "Hottest Love Around."] ~ Jose F. Promis |
