Private Fears in Public Places – Widescreen $19.99 A handful of characters struggle to hold on to relationships with the people they care for in this collaboration between playwright Alan Ayckbourn and filmmaker Alain Resnais. Dan (Lambert Wilson) has recently finished up a hitch in the Army, but rather than deal with his emotional issues, Dan prefers to get drunk. While he barely communicates with his girlfriend, Nicole (Laura Morante), she’s convinced they will still marry and opts to ignore his obvious problems. Lionel (Pierre Arditi) is a bartender who has become increasingly isolated and cut off from his friends as he looks after his father, Arthur. Arthur, however, is in failing health and has little appreciation of his son’s sacrifices. Thierry (Andr? Dussollier) is a real-estate salesman who has fallen for one of his co-workers, Charlotte (Sabine Az?ma); however, Charlotte’s mild-mannered exterior hides a personality that thrives on emotional gamesmanship. And Ga?lle (Isabelle Carr?), Thierry’s sister, is lonely and looking for a relationship, but her efforts bring her neither joy nor companionship. Coeurs (aka Petites Peurs Partag?es) received its world premiere at the 2006 Venice Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Damaged Care - $24.99 Damaged Care is fact-based drama about the managed care industry. It originally aired on Showtime. Laura Dern co-produced and stars in the film as Dr. Linda Peeno, who gives up her career after earning a medical degree, so that she can take care of her family. Her husband, Doug (James LeGros), is a successful OB/GYN. In 1987, when their children (from previous marriages) have gotten a little older, Linda decides to return to work, and gets a job as a medical reviewer at Humana Health Care. Patient claims that aren’t approved by the UR (utilization review) nurses are forwarded to the doctors on the medical review team, who, Linda learns, are expected to rubber-stamp the UR nurses’ decisions. Every decision Linda makes to cover a patient’s care is questioned, sometimes angrily. The head of the UR department, Cheryl Griffith (Regina King) befriends Linda, and shares her unhappiness with the system. Linda has a crisis of conscience when she gets a call about an emergency heart transplant that needs immediate approval. Pressured by the company, she finds an out in the employer’s healthcare booklet, and denies the claim. The patient dies. Eventually, Linda quits Humana (angering Doug), and Cheryl gets her a job at a smaller, non-profit company, Brothers Managed Care. The system is pretty much the same, though, and Linda comes into conflict with the cost-conscious head of the UR nurses, Gemma Coombs (Michelle Clunie). When a nurse (Suki Kaiser) is stricken with a series of crippling strokes, Linda takes a stand against the company to get her the treatment she needs. Eventually, Dr. Linda Peeno gets out of the system, and becomes an outspoken critic of the abuses of the health care industry. Dern’s mother, Diane Ladd, and Adam Arkin also appear in the film. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi |

Health Matters [5 Discs] - $44.99 Includes:The Forgetting: A Portrait of Alzheimer’s (2003) The Hidden Epidemic: Heart Disease in America (2007) Fat: What No One Is Telling You (2007) The Truth About Cancer (2008) Depression: Out of the Shadows (2008) The Forgetting: A Portrait of Alzheimer’s The documentary The Forgetting: A Portrait of Alzheimer’s intersperses information on leading research scientists conducting experiments that are enlarging the medical community’s understanding of the disease with a look at how the disease greatly affects those who suffer from it as well as those victim’s loved ones. The film is narrated by the Emmy award winning actor David Hyde Pierce. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi The Hidden Epidemic: Heart Disease in America Gain a comprehensive understanding of the disease which claims the lives of more Americans than cancer every year with this illuminating documentary that examines the origins of heart disease while also offering the latest information on research and prevention methods. A special half-hour discussion of heart disease hosted by Larry King and offering heart healthy tips from medical experts follows the program. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi Fat: What No One Is Telling You Per its title, thePBS special Fat: What No One is Telling You weighs in on obesity – that silent and subtly menacing American epidemic that afflicts a whopping 66% of U.S. adults. In lieu of exploring the oft-mentioned physiological dangers of this problem, however, this documentary raises the key question of why fat can be so difficult to shed – with a glimpse at the contributing factors in the psychological, physiological and emotional realms. In so doing, the film pulls in revelatory information about hunger, metabolism, and gastronomic consumption. As an added bonus, the film features candid and intimate interviews with everyday Americans who recount sobering stories about the obstacles that, for them, stand in the way of a trim and healthy body. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi The Truth About Cancer This documentary by filmmaker Linda Garmon traces the lives of people diagnosed with cancer, as well as family members of those patients. The project began when Garmon’s husband entered a battle with the illness, and the hospital where he underwent treatment became the central location for the movie. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi Depression: Out of the Shadows This documentary takes a look at how depression can affect anyone, regardless of age, race, or gender. Although more than 18 million Americans suffer from the illness, depression still retains a certain stigma in the public eye. This program hopes to educate by interviewing people who live with depression. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi |

Ron Marquette plays Whiley Pritcher, a stranger in the small community of Brewster, who lands a job as the host of a local public access call-in show. Public Enemies - $12.99 Based on author Bryan Burrough’s ambitious tome Public Enemies: America’s Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-43, director Michael Mann’s sprawling historical crime drama follows the efforts of top FBI agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale ) in capturing notorious bank robber John Dillinger. A folk hero to the American public thanks to his penchant for robbing the banks that many people believed responsible for the Great Depression, charming bandit Dillinger (Johnny Depp) was virtually unstoppable at the height of his criminal career; no jail could hold him, and his exploits endeared him to the common people while making headlines across the country. J. Edgar Hoover’s (Billy Crudup) FBI was just coming into formation, and what better way for the ambitious lawman to transform his fledgling Bureau of Investigation into a national police force than to capture the gang that always gets away? Determined to bust Dillinger and his crew, which also included sociopathic Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham) and Alvin Karpis (Giovanni Ribisi), Hoover christened Dillinger the country’s very first Public Enemy Number One, and unleashed Purvis to take them down by whatever means necessary. But Purvis underestimated Dillinger’s ingenuity as a master criminal, and after embarking on a frantic series of chases and shoot-outs, the dashing agent humbly surmised that he was in over his head. Outwitted and outgunned, Purvis knew that his only hope for busting Dillinger’s gang was to baptize a crew of Western ex-lawmen as official agents, and orchestrate a series of betrayals so cunning that even America’s criminal mastermind wouldn’t know what hit him. Marion Cotillard, Channing Tatum, and Stephen Dorff co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

The Substitute 4: Failure Is Not an Option - $8.99 An undercover commando poses as a teacher to root out the neo-Nazis at a military academy in this fourth installment of the tough-love educational/action saga. At the behest of a friend, commando Karl Thomasson (Treat Williams) heads to an Atlanta academy so he can root out the racist skinheads who are running amok. As it turns out, the little white supremacists are working at the behest of the school’s uber-racist headmaster, Brack (Patrick Kilpatrick). Thomasson finds an ally, or at least a bedmate, in the person of Jenny (Angie Everhart), the school’s medical officer. Meanwhile, he bullies the skinheads, rallies the other students, and uncovers a plot to blow up a minority-built nuclear power plant. Nuclear Winter, Vol. 1 $13.99 Rap has been taking itself too seriously for decades now, and when it does the results can be ridiculous, and even giggle-inducing. They can also be glorious. Sole takes himself more seriously than most, and while there’s nothing on Nuclear Winter, Vol. 1 (the first in a projected series of mixtapes) that will make you laugh out loud, there are plenty of moments that will make any independent-thinking listener roll his or her eyes and maybe snort a bit, as well as a good number of tracks that are original and insightful both musically and lyrically. Sometimes those moments follow on each other directly: on “My President,” Jared Paul (of Prayers for Atheists) snidely refers to Barack Obama as a “black Republican” (cue the eye-rolling), but eventually it becomes clear that his real beef is with the loss of the public option from the President’s health care legislation — which is, you have to admit, a pretty novel topic for a hip-hop track. Elsewhere you get oblique references to Thomas Hobbes, a takedown of public-relations pioneer Edward Bernays, and an unusually deliberate and even thoughtful rumination by Ceschi Ramos on implications of modern technology. Back on the eye-rolling front, J-Swagg opines that “it’s hard to look pretty when you’re marching on the Pentagon” (please: is there anything more photogenic than a march on the Pentagon?), but near the end of the program Astronautalis brings a bracingly old-school flavor to “Juicy,” realizing a perfect balance between urgency and restraint in his flow. There are much worse things in pop music than self-seriousness, and Sole and his collaborators are to be commended for pushing the envelope a bit. ~ Rick Anderson |

Health & Strength $14.99 In the veritable faceless crowd of DJs that flooded the reggae scene in the 1970s and 1980s, most of the best and most distinctive ones spawned a host of imitators. Only Prince Far I, with his gravelly, stentorian voice and strict spiritual focus, remained truly unique — in part because few could have imitated him if they’d wanted to, and even fewer would have dared try. Health and Strength was one of the albums he cut for Virgin’s Front Line imprint in the late ’70s; unlike the others, this one was shelved and eventually lost until a cassette copy surfaced in 1997. The cassette had been made from the original master tapes and was of surprisingly high quality; when On-U Sound’s Adrian Sherwood got his hands on it, he cleaned it up a little and released it on his own Pressure Sounds reissue imprint. The results are truly spectacular. Featuring several rare examples of Prince Far I’s singing as well as the chanting (or “toasting”) for which he was famous, Health and Strength stands with his best work. Highlights include the apocalyptic “Frontline Speech,” the admirably practical “Health Warning” (chanted over the rhythm to Gregory Isaacs’ “Sacrifice”), and “Clean Hands Pure Heart.” Essential. ~ Rick Anderson |
