4×4=12 $27.99 With the illuminated big head and all, Canadian producer Joel Zimmerman’s Deadmau5 alias is a blast to see live, but you can also bring quite a bit of that tech-house-meets-slammin’-electro excitement home with 4 x 4 = 12. As bad as the masked one is at math, he’s conversely just as good at making you dance, as this unmixed but almost non-stop set of big room tunes throbs and snaps with that Daft Punk sense of style. Rabid fans should be warned, though, that they’ve already heard the big highlights, as tracks like “Some Chords,” “Sofi Needs a Ladder,” the wicked “Animal Rights,” and others had been previously released on 12″s, but the remaining cuts are hardly filler. Unheard numbers such as the creepy “Cthulhu Sleeps” and the Wendy Carlos-like “Right This Second” help to turn a club-oriented set of tunes into a well-rounded album, and when the one-two punch of “Raise Your Weapon” and “One Trick Pony” introduce the Mau5′s newfound love of dubstep, you’ve got just enough variety. Triumph of the Will – Special $29.99 Triumph of the Will (Triumph des Willens) is a filmed record of the 1934 Nazi Party Convention, in Nuremberg. No, it is more than just a record: it is an exultation of Adolf Hitler, who from the moment his plane descends from Valhalla-like clouds is visually characterized as a God on Earth. The “Jewish question” is disposed of with a few fleeting closeups; filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl prefers to concentrate on cheering crowds, precision marching, military bands, and Hitler’s climactic speech, all orchestrated, choreographed and illuminated on a scale that makes Griffith and DeMille look like poverty-row directors. It has been alleged that the climactic rally, “spontaneous” Sieg-Heils and all, was pre-planned according to Riefenstahl’s specifications, the better to take full advantage of its cinematic potential. Allegedly, propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels resented the presence and intrusion of a woman director, but finally had to admit that her images, achieved through the use of 30 cameras and 120 assistants, were worth a thousand speeches. Consul $34.99 Gian Carlo Menotti has been an extremely prolific composer of opera. His gift for emotional directness and the use of “real” characters in his operas has made them appealing to wider audiences. ‘The Consul,’ written in 1950, was one in a string of successes for Menotti, including ‘Amelia Goes to the Ball,’ ‘The Old Maid And The Thief,’ and of course, ‘Amahl And The Night Visitors.’ Menotti himself wrote the libretto for ‘The Consul,’ a politically tinged, romantic story inspired by a newspaper article about a Polish immigrant who committed suicide because she was denied admission to Ellis Island.Menotti’s textured orchestration is beautifully illuminated in the musical interludes, and the outstanding performances of Beverly O’Regan Thiele, Michael Chioldi, and the always-excellent John Cheek (along with a strong ensemble cast) are finely supported by conductor Joel Revzen and the Camerata New York Orchestra. Take note of the musically soaring Act II, Scene II, where Magda goes to the Consul’s office upset and anguished, begging to speak with the Consul, but is put off by The Secretary. This chain of events drives the rest of the opera, leading to its sorrowful conclusion. |

The Eagle Has Landed [LP] [3/8] $36.98 After recording four fine studio albums in three years, Saxon had catapulted to the top of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal heap alongside Iron Maiden and Def Leppard, who were themselves already going strong, but had yet to release their American breakthroughs, The Number of the Beast and Pyromania, respectively. Therefore, the release of Saxon’s first live album — named The Eagle Has Landed after the iconic giant eagle lighting truss which illuminated the band on-stage — should have been a crowning achievement for the hard-working quintet. Instead, it signaled the end of their golden era: delivering an imperfect greatest-hits set marred by a few iffy performances (“Heavy Metal Thunder” distinctly lacked the, err, “thunder” of its studio version) and ill-chosen inclusions from the band’s then-recent Denim and Leather album (“Never Surrender,” “Fire in the Sky,” but no sign of the anthemic title track?); opening the door for lukewarm reviews from jaded English writers, always eager to tear down what they’d only recently built up. Saxon’s signature first hit, “Stallions of the Highway,” was also conspicuously absent, leaving even die-hard fans a little miffed — although these had absolutely no cause for complaint when it came to positively crackling performances of such all-time classics as “Motorcycle Man,” “747 (Strangers in the Night),” “Princess of the Night,” and the epic “Wheels of Steel,” in arguably its definitive, audience-participating version. In the end, all the above made The Eagle Has Landed a solid offering, but certainly not the caliber of live album which children of the ’70s had grown accustomed to receiving. EMI’s 2006 expanded reissue of The Eagle Has Landed retains the original’s mixed qualities: adding a generous six tracks supposedly culled from the same, 1981-1982, time period, but failing to remix them so that they sound like it; all the while paying little mind to addressing missing essentials left off the first time around. Still, aging Saxon fans will likely all agree that the hour’s grown too late for quibbling over such details, when faced with heartwarmingly resurrected nuggets like “And the Bands Played On,” “Frozen Rainbow,” “Midnight Rider,” and “Dallas 1PM.” ~ Eduardo Rivadavia |

Maya Deren’s Experimental Films - $24.99 Includes:Meshes of the Afternoon (1943) At Land (1944) A Study in Choreography for Camera (1945) Ritual in Transfigured Time (1946) Meditation on Violence (1948) The Very Eye of Night (1959) Meshes of the Afternoon One of the most important and influential experimental films of the 20th century, Maya Deren’s 18-minute feminist classic explores the interior images of a woman (played by Deren) whose daydreams restore mystery and danger to the ordinary objects of her everyday life. Deren veers away from plot to advance her view that a film should be like a poem: a deep tissue of images designed to examine a mood or startle us with the strangeness of the things around us. Using film as an artistic medium rather than as a vehicle for stars or story or action, Deren looks back toward the earlier European avant-garde of such filmmakers as Germaine Dulac, who believed that film most resembled the abstract yet emotional form of music. Deren’s investigation of one woman’s subconscious experience explicitly rejects the linear form of theater and literature in favor of the non-narrative models offered by painting, music, sculpture, or poetry. This alternative view of film as a non-narrative artform was incalculably influential on future filmmakers, and in 1990 Meshes was named to the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry. ~ Leo Charney, Rovi At Land In this surrealist film, Maya Deren’s character rolls up on the beach, backwards. She crawls through a party unnoticed, but ultimately has social encounters with a number of people, and snatches a chess piece from a game in progress, running past at least three of her selves on her way down the beach.
