Reagan Health Care Speech

Who are the top 3 worst Presidents on your list?
Mines are:
1. Herbert Hoover- The year is 1929, self-explanatory. If you don’t know, look it up.
2. George W. Bush- Congress had to give him the authority to go to Iraq, but he wanted to go in even before he got into office. $10 trillion budget deficit, over 4,000 U.S. troops dead, still no WMDs, failing housing economy, failing health care system, heavy, heavy job loss, failing overall economy, massive bailouts, 9/11 attacks, all under his administration.
3. Ronald Reagan- made some man tear down his wall (which had nothing to do with the U.S.), he seemed to have “inspired” and give “hope” with his great speeches, but did very little to turn the country around. High unemployment rates, high homeless rates, high budget deficits, and a market crash in 1987 under his administration.
1.George W. Bush
2.George H.W. Bush
3.Ronald Reagan

Reagan - $14.99 Few American presidents have engendered the degree of controversy associated with the 40th, Ronald Wilson Reagan (1911-2004), who held office from 1981-89. Many Americans, especially those on the right, still lionize Reagan as a modern hero, while others passionately argue that the man was merely a figurehead, an “empty suit” surrounded by a vast, whirling Republican political machine. But where does the truth lie? The documentary Reagan enlists such elements as interviews with historians and seldom-seen archival footage to investigate the various element that shaped this undeniably complex and fascinating political icon. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi |

Health & Strength $14.99 In the veritable faceless crowd of DJs that flooded the reggae scene in the 1970s and 1980s, most of the best and most distinctive ones spawned a host of imitators. Only Prince Far I, with his gravelly, stentorian voice and strict spiritual focus, remained truly unique — in part because few could have imitated him if they’d wanted to, and even fewer would have dared try. Health and Strength was one of the albums he cut for Virgin’s Front Line imprint in the late ’70s; unlike the others, this one was shelved and eventually lost until a cassette copy surfaced in 1997. The cassette had been made from the original master tapes and was of surprisingly high quality; when On-U Sound’s Adrian Sherwood got his hands on it, he cleaned it up a little and released it on his own Pressure Sounds reissue imprint. The results are truly spectacular. Featuring several rare examples of Prince Far I’s singing as well as the chanting (or “toasting”) for which he was famous, Health and Strength stands with his best work. Highlights include the apocalyptic “Frontline Speech,” the admirably practical “Health Warning” (chanted over the rhythm to Gregory Isaacs’ “Sacrifice”), and “Clean Hands Pure Heart.” Essential. ~ Rick Anderson |

Damaged Care - $24.99 Damaged Care is fact-based drama about the managed care industry. It originally aired on Showtime. Laura Dern co-produced and stars in the film as Dr. Linda Peeno, who gives up her career after earning a medical degree, so that she can take care of her family. Her husband, Doug (James LeGros), is a successful OB/GYN. In 1987, when their children (from previous marriages) have gotten a little older, Linda decides to return to work, and gets a job as a medical reviewer at Humana Health Care. Patient claims that aren’t approved by the UR (utilization review) nurses are forwarded to the doctors on the medical review team, who, Linda learns, are expected to rubber-stamp the UR nurses’ decisions. Every decision Linda makes to cover a patient’s care is questioned, sometimes angrily. The head of the UR department, Cheryl Griffith (Regina King) befriends Linda, and shares her unhappiness with the system. Linda has a crisis of conscience when she gets a call about an emergency heart transplant that needs immediate approval. Pressured by the company, she finds an out in the employer’s healthcare booklet, and denies the claim. The patient dies. Eventually, Linda quits Humana (angering Doug), and Cheryl gets her a job at a smaller, non-profit company, Brothers Managed Care. The system is pretty much the same, though, and Linda comes into conflict with the cost-conscious head of the UR nurses, Gemma Coombs (Michelle Clunie). When a nurse (Suki Kaiser) is stricken with a series of crippling strokes, Linda takes a stand against the company to get her the treatment she needs. Eventually, Dr. Linda Peeno gets out of the system, and becomes an outspoken critic of the abuses of the health care industry. Dern’s mother, Diane Ladd, and Adam Arkin also appear in the film. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi |

Ronald Reagan: A Legacy Remembered - $19.99 For this up-close-and-personal TV documentary, former CNN Washington bureau chief Frank Cesno was given unprecedented access to the memories of those people whose lives were profoundly touched by former President Ronald Reagan: family members, friends, political colleagues, advisors, fellow world leaders, employees. Bypassing Reagan’s Hollywood career and controversial tenure as head of the Screen Actors Guild, the two-hour film focuses on his political career, and the events in his childhood and early adulthood that helped shape his vision and character. Impeccably unbiased, the film explores both the highs and lows of the Reagan administration, giving equal time to his adherents and detractors. Among the fascinating revelations herein are former Soviet premiere Gorbachev’s affirmation that no one but Reagan could have successfully brokered the US-USSR peace summits, and the observation by son Ron Reagan that his father, though affable and outgoing, always held back “that last ten percent”, refusing to allow anyone to get truly close to him. This evenly balanced film will confirm Reagan’s greatness to his supporters, and reiterate the man’s shortcomings to his non-supporters; even decades after the Reagan regime, there is no middle ground so far as his friends and foes are concerned. ~ Rovi |

Ronald Reagan: An American Journey - $12.99 The 40th President of the United States, Ronald Wilson Reagan, gets a full analysis in this biographical documentary that places its strongest thematic emphasis on the trajectory of Reagan’s political career. Beginning with reflections on Reagan’s accomplishments during his term as Governor of California, the film them moves forward into such historic events as his debates with Carter and Mondale in 1980, the terrifying attack on his life by crazed assassin John Hinckley, Reagan’s groundbreaking summits with such world leaders as Mikhail Gorbachev and Margaret Thatcher, and his method of handling some of the major global events of the 1980s, such as the 1983 Invasion of Grenada, and events that would later lead to the fall of the Soviet Bloc. What emerges is a portrait of a complex, magnetic individual who helped single-handedly redefine the landscape of American political life. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi |

NBC News Presents: Ronald Reagan – Fullscreen Subtitle Dolby $8.99 Ronald Reagan was one of the most popular and most controversial political figures of his time. To many, he was a great communicator who helped bring America together, confronted Communism, and made a nation believe in itself again. To others, he was a man out of touch with many of his constituents who often ignored questions he couldn’t answer, avoided problems he couldn’t solve, and deepened the nation’s social and economic divide. But by any yardstick, he was one of the most influential men of the second half of the 20th Century, and this home video release from NBC News examines his remarkable life and many accomplishments. NBC News Presents: Ronald Reagan features archival footage from Reagan’s two terms as president, interviews with his friends and colleagues, a look at his romance with wife Nancy Reagan, and a salute to his career as an actor (including a complete 1957 episode of General Electric Theater featuring Reagan). ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Speech (Japan) (Remastered) (Mlps) $54.99 Musically, Steamhammer was the cream of the crop of all rock bands from their thriving primordial era. In the realm of power rock trios, they were comparable to Cream. Yet this band is far superior in every way, but they failed to get the rave reviews and critical attention that the flashier Cream garnered. Diverging from the typical power rock style on Speech, their fourth and final album, the band found themselves in a dilemma without their vocalist, who had left after the previous release, Mountains. This led to a radical development for the band. Instead of hiring a new singer, the rest of the group picked up the slack, and reduced the role of the vocals significantly, opting for a progressive jam style that was hugely innovative for its time. Guitarist Martin Pugh offers a crashing, furious style that mixes Jimmy Page with early Robert Fripp. When Pugh seeks passages of beauty and tranquility, he finds them with ease, but when he aims for intensity, watch out! He literally attacks the listener, pounding them with his mammoth, perfectly executed riffs. Meanwhile, bassist Louis Cennamo is so talented and innovative that he single-handedly brought the bow into rock music with his bowed bass intro to the album. Several years before Page would pick up the bow for “Kashmir,” Cennamo uses the bowed bass as means to an end, not for simple effect. Just as a normal bassist alone, masters within the genre owe their lifeblood to him. For he is able to play along with just about the toughest, most technical drumming around, that of drummer Mick Bradley, who is easily the most accomplished musician of the trio. To state that he is rock’s greatest drummer is simply not enough. His energetic approach to the drum kit helped him become one of the first and only drummers in rock history, along with King Crimson’s Michael Giles, to use polyrhythmic drumming, a style commonly used by jazz drummers. His dynamic performance on the primarily instrumental “For Against,” which blows away John Bonham’s “Moby Dick” and Ginger Baker’s “Toad” in a heartbeat. On this album, there was a rumor that the band received some secret vocal and lyrical help from Yardbirds vocalist Keith Relf. Whether or not this is true remains a mystery, but what is fact, sadly, is that not long after this album Mick Bradley succumbed to Leukemia and passed away. This marked the end of Steamhammer, but the other two members forged on, forming a band called Armageddon. Speech is one of rock’s finest and most creative hours, and one tends to wonder where Steamhammer could have gone from this point on had it not been for obscurity and sudden tragedy. ~ Jason Hundey |

Ronald Reagan: Santa Fe Trail/This Is the Army/Stilwell Road [3 Discs] - $19.99 Includes:Santa Fe Trail (1940), MPAA Rating: NR This Is the Army (1943) The Stilwell Road (1945) Santa Fe Trail Santa Fe Trail, Errol Flynn’s third western, has precisely nothing to do with the titular trail. Instead, the film is a simplistic retelling of the John Brown legend, with Raymond Massey playing the famed abolitionist. The events leading up to the bloody confrontation between Brown and the US Army at Harper’s Ferry, Virginia, are treated in a painstakingly even-handed fashion: Brown’s desire to free the slaves is “right” but his methods are “wrong.” Whenever the leading characters are asked about their own feelings towards slavery, the response is along the noncommittal lines of “A lot of people are asking those questions,” “I don’t have the answer to that,” and so forth. Before we get to the meat of the story, we are treated to a great deal of byplay between West Point graduates Jeb Stuart (Flynn) and George Armstrong Custer (Ronald Reagan), who carry on a friendly rivalry over the affections of one Kit Carson Halliday (Olivia DeHavilland). Just so we know that the picture is meant to be a follow-up to Warners’ Dodge City and Virginia City, Flynn is saddled with Alan Hale and “Big Boy” Williams, his comic sidekicks from those earlier films. Despite its muddled point of view, Santa Fe Trail is often breathtaking entertainment, excitingly staged by director Michael Curtiz. The film’s public domain status has made Santa Fe Trail one of the most easily accessible of Errol Flynn’s Warner Bros. vehicles. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi This Is the Army The splashy, star-studded This is the Army is based on the Irving Berlin Broadway musical of the same name, which in turn was a reworking of Berlin’s WW1 “barracks musical” Yip Yip Yaphank. In both instances, the cast was largely comprised of genuine servicemen, many of them either recently returned from fighting or on the verge of heading off to war. The Hollywood-imposed storyline concerns Jerry Jones (George Murphy), a member of the original 1918 Yip Yip Yaphank cast. His showbiz career curtailed by a leg injury, Jerry becomes a producer during the postwar era. When the US enters WW2, Jerry gathers together several other cast members from the 1918 Berlin musical to help him stage a new all-serviceman show, titled (what else?) This is the Army. The show-within-a-show framework is able to accommodate a romantic subplot, involving Jerry’s son Johnny (Ronald Reagan, later a political comrade-in-arms of George Murphy) and Eileen Dibble (Joan Leslie), the daughter of Yip Yip Yaphank alumnus Eddie Dibble (Charles Butterworth). Some of the best moments in This is the Army are from the Broadway production itself, though the lengthy Alfred Lunt-Lynn Fontanne imitation and incessant “gay” jokes may have been too smart for the room in 1943. Guest stars include boxer Joe Louis, Kate Smith (singing “God Bless America”, naturally) and Irving Berlin himself, who steals the show with his plaintive rendition of “Oh, Ho |
