Black Sun: The Nanking Massacre – Widescreen Subtitle

$12.99

During the dark days in which the Japanese Imperial Army occupied the central eastern Chinese city of Nanking, 300,000 individuals were tortured as war crimes raged out of control. In addition to the butchering of the Chinese military, the civilian population also suffered. Mixing actual footage and still photographs of the atrocity with stomach-churning reenactments of the crimes committed by the Japanese Imperial Army, director Tun Fei Mou’s unforgettable account of the Nanking Massacre serves as a shocking and sickening reminder of the true horrors of war. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Trail of Tears: Cherokee Legacy -

Trail of Tears: Cherokee Legacy -

$29.99

Voted the Best Documentary of 2006 by the American Indian Film Institute, Chip Richie’s detailed account of the events that unfolded following the implementation of Jackson’s Indian Removal Act provides an unflinching look at one of the darkest chapters in American history. The year was 1938, and the Cherokee Nation was being forced to relocate to Indian Territory. During the course of that long walk, nearly a quarter of the Nation perished, including elders and young children. It was a time of unparalleled suffering, and today the Trail of Tears stands as a grim reminder of the tragedy that can unfold when greed takes precedence over humanity, and ignorance wins out over compassion. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The author of the notorious Jeffrey Dahmer comics brings his dark vision to the big screen with this tale of a black serial killer who must kill to silence the voices in his head. Sixteen years in the making, Garbage Man was completed after director Hart D. Fisher’s longtime love and live-in girlfriend was brutally slain during production. The persistent disembodied voices a constant reminder of what was done to him in the past, a man who hates his job and has time to kill resorts to unimaginable cruelty as he careens toward oblivion. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

DUI: Dead in 5 Seconds -

DUI: Dead in 5 Seconds -

$9.99

This film is a sobering look at the consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Each year thousands of fatalities result from the careless decision to get behind the wheel of a car when common sense dictates leaving the driving to someone else. The graphic images presented are a grisly reminder of what can happen. The film presents interviews with family members whose lives have been forever changed by a D.U.I. accident that could have been prevented. The film is particularly aimed at teenagers. It underscores the criminal consequences of vehicular homicide, as well as the lifelong psychological repercussions to everyone involved. ~ Rose of Sharon Winter, Rovi

Mame - Widescreen Subtitle

Mame – Widescreen Subtitle

$14.99

Lucille Ball stars in this film version of the hit Jerry Herman Broadway musical, which featured an electrifying performance by Angela Lansbury. As Patrick Dennis’ plucky and resilient Auntie Mame, Ball’s low-pitched, growling moan of a voice (a spine-chilling reminder of the sound of Linda Blair’s demon-possession in The Exorcist) and her gaudy and lumbering fashion-horse gait turns Mame into an elderly cross-dresser. In this guise, Mame rehashes the plot from Dennis’s novel and the previous non-musical Rosalind Russell film. During the Depression era 1930s, she enrolls her nephew into a liberal private school, tries a turn in show business (with the help of her friend Vera [Beatrice Arthur]), and marries a well-to-do Southern planter (Robert Preston). After her husband’s death, Mame concerns herself with her now grown-up nephew, his girlfriend, and the girlfriend’s intolerant parents. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

BTK Killer - Widescreen Subtitle Dolby

BTK Killer – Widescreen Subtitle Dolby

$12.99

Veteran Boogey Man and Zodiac Killer director Ulli Lommel continues his long tradition of delivering tense thrills with this relentless look at the life of the elusive, Kansas-based serial killer known to authorities only as “B.T.K.” before his arrest in February of 2005. A sadistic madman who left no clues at the scene of his crimes except for the ominous calling card of “Bind. Torture. Kill.,” the man who eluded authorities for over three decades was finally captured by authorities after once again giving in to his bloodlust and embarking on a vicious killing spree. Though his murderous exploits had finally come to a close and the residents of Wichita could comfortably breathe a sigh of relief, the horrors that Dennis Rader (aka the B.T.K. killer) inflicted upon the frightened community offer a chilling reminder that even the most upstanding of citizens can harbor dark and frightening secrets. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Chopin I Love

Chopin I Love

$14.99

Celebrated for his performances of Ravel and Debussy, Jean-Yves Thibaudet now turns to Chopin with a widely varied program that mixes moods while alternating miniatures with longer works. His approach is refreshingly direct and unsentimental, wonderfully fleet-fingered, and gracefully light on its feet, with the natural charm and elegance found in his performances of French music. Such extrovert works as the Second Scherzo, F major Etude or “Grande valse brillante” dazzle with their speed and clear articulation without losing their poise, while the more pensive items like the F minor Mazurka or B flat minor Nocturne readily draw one into their quiet worlds. An unexpected bonus is the inclusion of four recordings made by Thibaudet on Chopin’s own 1848 Broadwood piano. To suddenly hear the “Raindrop” Prelude on this instrument is a jarring experience, as if one has been transported back in time, the more delicate, brittle timbre a haunting reminder of the distant sound world this music originally came from.

K?ln Concert Featuring Dick Twardzik

K?ln Concert Featuring Dick Twardzik

$14.99

Full performer name: Chet Baker (Trumpet/Vocals/Composer).Unreleased for half a century — and worth the wait. Documenting a complete West German live appearance from October 9, 1955 (including an announcement from promoter Gigi Campi and some impromptu dialogue from Chet Baker himself), The K?ln Concert Featuring Dick Twardzik captures a harder, more soulful dimension of the trumpeter’s work absent from his concurrent studio dates. There’s real heat simmering below Baker’s icy-cool tones, and he invests familiar compositions like “Imagination” and “I’ll Remember April” with new verve. No less notable is his support staff, featuring pianist Richard Twardzik in one of his final performances before his fatal heroin overdose just 12 days later. His contributions here are shapely and supple, each note a poignant reminder of the immense talent he squandered away. ~ Jason Ankeny

Holocaust: The Liberation of Majdanek – B&W

$12.99

Take a harrowing trip down one of the darkest roads in human history as rare footage of the only concentration camp still operational at the time of its liberation arrives on home video for the benefit of history buffs and Holocaust scholars everywhere. Established in 1941 and liberated by the Soviet advance just three years later, Majdanek was located near Lubin and served as a frightful reminder of the efficiency of the Nazi death machine. At the time Majdanek was liberated, the speed of the Soviet forces was so swift that the Germans had no time to conceal the evidence of the atrocities committed at the notorious camp. Additional footage of the SS Officers and Kapos as they appear before a Russian tribunal at Lubin shows the surviving inmates giving evidence against the accused before a guilty verdict is delivered followed by a sentence of death by hanging. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Here is a vivid reminder of Anna Moffo, the Pennsylvania-born lyric-coloratura soprano who made her Met debut in 1959 and had an international career that went beyond the opera stage into pop music and film acting. This recital, led by the the legendary opera veteran Tulio Serafin, was recorded in Rome in 1960 and captures Moffo at her freshest and most brilliant in a selection that includes tender arias such as “Mi chiamano Mimi” from Puccini’s ‘La Boheme’ and Micaela’s Air from Bizet’s ‘Carmen,’ as well as more explosive coloratura fare such as “Bel raggio lusinghier” from Rossini’s ‘Semiramide’ and the delightful “Bell Song” from Delibe’s ‘Lakme,’ whose final high E is worth the price of the disc alone. But, if you need another reason, the sound, of the best RCA “Living Stereo” vintage, is spectacularly present.

Armistice

Armistice

$18.98

Mutemath indulge their experimental side with ARMISTICE, the band’s first album since “Typical” climbed the charts two years prior. While “Typical” emphasized Technicolor guitars and arena-ready vocals, the songs on ARMISTICE don’t reveal their hooks so easily, cloaking themselves in electronics, strings, and ambient guitars while largely avoiding the poppier elements of the band’s debut. For all their experimental wrapping paper, however, these tracks still deliver what has steadily become Mutemath’s signature sound, melding Paul Meany’s tenor voice with an epic, nocturnal sound reminiscent of Radiohead, Muse, and the Music. There’s a good deal of dance-rock here, too, and the angular “Goodbye” is a welcome reminder that Mutemath’s work can target the feet as well as the head. This is essentially a thinking man’s album, though, more indicative of the band’s breadth than its ability to make hit singles.

John Waters does a quirky spin on ’50s nostalgia in Cry-Baby, his musical homage to Rebel Without a Cause and Romeo and Juliet. Set in Baltimore in 1954 at the birth of rock & roll, the film features Johnny Depp as Wade “Cry-Baby” Walker. Depp is pure charisma as a juvenile delinquent with a permanent tear slithering down his cheek, a reminder of his state-executed parents. In the depths of his despair appears goody-goody girl Allison (Amy Locane), who has a sexual crush on Cry-Baby. But Allison’s Pat Boone-like boyfriend, Baldwin (Stephen E. Miller), the leader of the squares, is dead set against Cry-Baby and the rest of the juvenile delinquents and leads a revolt against them. In the resultant riot, the juvenile delinquents are blamed for the chaos, and Cry-Baby finds himself dispatched to reform school. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

A schizophrenic teen who blames her mother for her father’s untimely death falls under the deadly influence of the occult in this south-of-the-border tale of terror starring Manuel Ojeda. Marina misses her father badly, and any reminder of her dearly departed dad sends her into an uncontrollable rage. As Marina’s mental health gradually deteriorates, her concerned mother sends her to the family’s remote country estate in hopes that some time away will do the grieving teen some good. The already grim situation soon becomes exponentially more horrific, however, when the occult-obsessed caretaker of the estate begins to exert her dark influence over the fragile Marina. As the dark side begins to take hold and Marina spirals into a harrowing state of dementia, the stage is set for a supernatural confrontation between the powers of light and the forces of darkness. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

$24.99

In the summer of 2002, Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon ordered the construction of a massive security wall, which would clearly define the border between Israel and Palestine and prevent Palestinian forces from easily entering Israeli territory. While the wall follows the nation’s official borderlines, it cuts through neighborhoods, gardens, farmlands and others areas, serving as an ugly and divisive reminder of the ongoing conflict and ultimately trapping people on both sides within the barrier. Documentary filmmaker Simone Bitton, a Jew born in Morocco who identifies with both Israeli and Arab cultures, examines the long and costly process of building this fence in Wall (aka Mur), which offers a visual record of the barrier’s emergence and features interview with the people who build it, as well as those forced to live in its shadow. Wall was screened as part of the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

The forgotten stories and selfless sacrifices made by the American men and women who valiantly served in the Great War come together to offer a lasting reminder of our brave heritage in this documentary from filmmaker Mark Bussler. In addition to such literary icons as e.e. cummings and Ernest Hemingway, who transformed the horrors of war into treasured literary classics, director Bussler pays special attention to the African-American soldiers and female volunteers whose efforts broke considerable new ground in the realms of racial and social equality and helped to shape the 21st century. These are the stories of soldiers whose survival against immeasurable odds would provide just the inspiration their fellow soldiers needed to continue the battle, and of the pilots, ambulance drivers, and medical workers who risked it all to ensure the safety of their wartime brethren. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Here is a vivid reminder of a glorious time in Spain’s cultural history, when its composers and artists successfully vied for prominence with those from Italy, France, and Germany. One of the remarkable qualities of Spanish Renaissance music is its variety, which ranges from the serene tranquility found in Flemish polyphony to the colorful devices characteristic of Venetian composers and, of course, the pungent spice of its own native folk dances. All of these elements commingle in the unique form of the ensalada (salad), which “tosses” them together into a veritable vaudeville skit, a rowdy music drama with a contrived allegorical plot, and a no-holds-barred approach to musical material, featuring improvisation, comical imitative sound effects, and popular melodies. The master of the ensalada was Mateo Flecha, three of whose works are presented here. In addition to these are examples of the various sacred and profane forms that went into the salad, mass movements, songs and dances, all performed with the inimitable vocal expertise of the King’s Singers and accompanied by Andrew Lawrence-King’s excellent Harp Consort.REVIEWS:International Record Review (5/00, pp.97-98) – “…The singing on this recording is, for me, second almost to none. All aspects (ensemble, intonation, blend and so on) are, as one might expect, polished and precise….the sacred pieces are beautifully and sensitively performed…”

Funny, we can’t remember this many singers turning up on the Crusaders’ albums, but look a little closer at the liner. For this 1987 compilation — designed, perhaps, to fill the gap between albums by a group that no longer was a full-time act — MCA reached for records by B.B. King, Tina Turner, Joe Sample and Wilton Felder that various Crusaders played on, as well as the band’s output from Street Life through The Good and Bad Times. B.B. takes the prize for his fabulous, humorously funky, live-in-London turn on “Better Not Look Down” — he plays guitar so sparingly, and every note is right in the pocket — but Joe Cocker comes close, riding on a classic bumpy Crusaders groove on “This Old World’s Too Funky for Me.” Of course, Randy Crawford’s career-making “Street Life” leads off the set, and Tina Turner (in a lugubrious dissection of the Beatles’ “Help”), Bobby Womack, Alltrinna Grayson, Bill Withers, Flora Purim and Josie James also contribute with various degrees of effectiveness. Despite a few weak moments, the album works amazingly well, partly as an alternative highlights collection and partly as a sober reminder to the remaining Crusaders and their fans as to how essential drummer Stix Hooper was to their sound. ~ Richard S. Ginell

The Devil Makes Three [LP]

The Devil Makes Three [LP]

$14.98

The Devil Makes Three performs acoustic blues and folk music with a spirit of fun and irreverence usually reserved for the original pre-WWII recordings from which the combo draws inspiration. Eschewing virtuosity and scholarly rigid adherence to classic forms, the drummer-less New England-based trio employs acoustic guitar, upright bass, banjo, harmonica, and musical saw to explore themes of death, excessive alcohol consumption, and other generally dark subjects in a shambling, danceable style that would fit nicely on a summer festival stage alongside Jack Johnson or G. Love.On its 2008 self-titled disc, The Devil Makes Three evokes a campground hoedown or late-night 1962 Greenwich Village folk-revival jam session. “Beneath the Piano” matches a brisk, polka-like rhythm to lyrics mining territory somewhere between a Bukowski novel and Jim Croce’s “You Don’t Mess Around With Jim,” while the slightly herky-jerky feel of “Old Number Seven” mirrors the boozy confusion of the narrator’s paean to Jack Daniel’s whiskey. The sound of average folks casting out demons with simple instruments and a few turns around the old barn floor, THE DEVIL MAKES THREE serves as a welcome reminder that blues and folk music were once as celebratory as they were serious.
