The Dawn Rider - $4.99 An average entry in the otherwise above-average Monogram/”Lone Star” Western series starring John Wayne, this film is noteworthy for containing one of the last screen appearances of Joseph De Grasse, a major silent screen actor-director, who — with his screenwriter wife Ida May Park — created scores of well-received Universal melodramas in the 1910s. De Grasse appears all too briefly here as Wayne’s father, murdered during a robbery of his express office. Wayne, playing John Mason, chases after the killer, an outlaw whose face is hidden behind a polka dot neckerchief. Mason is injured during the chase and brought to the home of Alice Gordon (Marion Burns) by newfound friend Ben McClure (Reed Howes). Nursed back to health by Alice, with whom he is falling in love, Mason sets a trap for the killer and his gang by announcing that he is guarding a valuable gold shipment. The killer is revealed to be Rudd, Alice’s brother (Dennis Moore, here billed “Denny Meadow”), whom John challenges to a duel. Feeling betrayed by Mason’s love for Alice, Ben secretly substitutes the bullets in his former friend’s gun with blanks. Persuaded by Alice that John has done nothing untoward, a repentant Ben arrives just in time to save his friend from certain death but is himself felled by a bullet fired by villainous barkeep Yakima Canutt in a final, well-staged, shootout. What there is of comic relief in this rather dour Western is provided by gangly Nelson McDowell, an actor seemingly born to portray comic undertakers, which is exactly what he plays here. ~ Hans J. Instead, Carey turns out to be an undercover law officer, dedicated to bringing the Rider to justice. A pre-”Gabby” George Hayes turns up as the ostensible comedy relief, who, like Carey, isn’t all that he seems. Rider of the Plains – B&W $5.99 Produced by Trem Carr, this enjoyable B-Western featured the strapping Tom Tyler, a cowboy performer who historically worked well with children. The child in this case was freckled Andy Shuford, a tough little boy rider. Little orphaned Sandy is adopted by a reformed outlaw (Tyler, of course), but when the townsfolk discover Tyler’s true identity they conspire to take the tyke away from him. The express office is robbed and Tyler is the obvious suspect. He is provided with a seemingly airtight alibi by the kid, who swears to have seen two of Tyler’s enemies commit the crime. After the real culprits have been apprehended, young Sandy confesses that he never really saw anything but only “guessed correctly.” Although based on an original screenplay by Wellyn Totman, Rider of the Plains bore a certain resemblance to the same year’s The Sheriff’s Secret, a Robert J. After a major cocaine sale to an L.A. connection (Phil Spector), free-wheeling potheads Billy (Hopper) and Wyatt, aka Captain America (Peter Fonda, who also produced), motor eastward to party at Mardi Gras before “retiring” to Florida with the riches concealed in Wyatt’s stars-and-stripes gas tank. As they ride through the Southwest, they take a hitchhiker (Luke Askew) to a struggling hippie commune before they get thrown in a small-town jail for “parading without a permit.” Their cellmate, drunken ACLU lawyer George Hanson (Jack Nicholson, replacing Rip Torn), does them a “groovy” favor by getting them out of jail and then decides to join them. Babbling about Venusians, George discovers the joys of smoking grass, but an encounter with Southern rednecks soon proves how right he is about the danger posed by Billy’s and Wyatt’s unfettered life in a country that has lost its ideals. With the straight world closing in, Wyatt and Billy try to revel in New Orleans with some LSD and hookers (Karen Black and Toni Basil), but the acid trip is shot through with morbidity. Once they reach Florida, Billy raves about attaining the American dream; Wyatt, however, knows the truth: “We blew it.” Produced and directed by two Hollywood iconoclasts with under a half-million non-studio dollars, Easy Rider shook up the languishing movie industry when it grossed over 19 million dollars in 1969; it captured the spirit of the times as it woke Hollywood up to the power of young audiences and socially relevant movies, along with such other landmarks of the late ’60s as Bonnie and Clyde, The Graduate, and 2001. Shot on location by Laszlo Kovacs, Easy Rider eschewed old-fashioned Hollywood polish for documentary-style immediacy, and it enhanced its casual feel with improvised dialogue and realistically “stoned” acting. With a soundtrack of contemporary rock songs by Jimi Hendrix, the Band, and Steppenwolf to complete the atmosphere, Easy Rider was hailed for capturing the increasingly violent Vietnam-era split between the counterculture and the repressive Establishment. Born in Boston, Mass, Revere was an excellent silversmith and an ardent patriot, but a mediocre military leader. A member of the Sons of Liberty, he became the primary express rider for the Boston Committee of Safety. His famous ride to Lexington in 1775 was only the best-known of the many courier services he performed. He later was court-martialed and acquitted for his leadership during the failed Penebscot Bay expedition of 1779. After the American Revolution, he continued his silversmith trade with great success. The Dawn Rider – Fullscreen $8.99 An average entry in the otherwise above-average Monogram/”Lone Star” Western series starring John Wayne, this film is noteworthy for containing one of the last screen appearances of Joseph De Grasse, a major silent screen actor-director, who — with his screenwriter wife Ida May Park — created scores of well-received Universal melodramas in the 1910s. De Grasse appears all too briefly here as Wayne’s father, murdered during a robbery of his express office. Wayne, playing John Mason, chases after the killer, an outlaw whose face is hidden behind a polka dot neckerchief. Mason is injured during the chase and brought to the home of Alice Gordon (Marion Burns) by newfound friend Ben McClure (Reed Howes). Nursed back to health by Alice, with whom he is falling in love, Mason sets a trap for the killer and his gang by announcing that he is guarding a valuable gold shipment. The killer is revealed to be Rudd, Alice’s brother (Dennis Moore, here billed “Denny Meadow”), whom John challenges to a duel. Feeling betrayed by Mason’s love for Alice, Ben secretly substitutes the bullets in his former friend’s gun with blanks. Persuaded by Alice that John has done nothing untoward, a repentant Ben arrives just in time to save his friend from certain death but is himself felled by a bullet fired by villainous barkeep Yakima Canutt in a final, well-staged, shootout. What there is of comic relief in this rather dour Western is provided by gangly Nelson McDowell, an actor seemingly born to portray comic undertakers, which is exactly what he plays here. ~ Hans J. Since the story takes place in 17th century Spain, we suspect that the character’s name wasn’t “Hercules” when the film was originally released in Italy. No matter: the steely-eyed Steel is most impressive as he tilts with gypsies and evil dons. Just as impressive is the cleavage displayed by the ladies in the cast. Filmed in 1960, Hercules and the Masked Rider came to America in 1963 as part of TV’s Son of Hercules package. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Maciste Nell’Inferno di Genghis Khan Mark Forest stars as Hercules in this sword-and-sandal affair from 1960 (its American release occured two years later). The film bears a striking resemblance to the like-vintage Hercules Against the Barbarians, right down to the choice of leading man. We suspect that both films were excerpted from a longer Hercules epic, then released separately to engender a higher box-office take. Oh, yes the plot: Hercules takes on the three sons of Genghis Khan, quite a remarkable feat for a superhero from ancient Greece. As he has done so many times before, our hero then engages in a bit of subterfuge by pretending to be an Easterner. Thus catching the Tollivers off guard, he manages to discover their mountain hideout and there is a final shootout.
