Jade Tiger - $12.99 The Jade Tiger, a bloody and expansive martial arts epic, follows the self-destructive standoff between the Zhao and Tang clans in ancient China. It opens at the wedding of Zhao Wuji (Ti Lung), when a traitorous assassin working for the Tang clan beheads his father at the Zhao’s Dafeng Hall. Wuji seeks revenge, but is poisoned by a member of the rival clan. He is saved by another swordsman and a mysterious brother and sister who live in an ethereal realm of peace and harmony called the Hate Free Hall. He is invited to stay in their world but Wuji’s thirst for vengeance is too powerful. Going undercover he gains access to the Tang’s base, but his plans are led astray when he woos and prepares to wed a member of the rival clan. Meanwhile an army of Zhao warriors executes an attack on the Tang headquarters in hopes of destroying their poison factory. In the climatic battle Wuji is torn between his devotions to both factions (and his two fianc?es), who frequently turn on one another anyway. In the end Wuji is left wondering whether such mindless violence is worth it and if he should have stayed at the Hate Free Hall when he had his chance. White Tiger – B&W $5.99 A crook melodrama whose working title “Lady Raffles” basically told the story, White Tiger was director Tod Browning’s last film under his contract with Universal and his final collaboration with the studio’s leading lady, Priscilla Dean. Dean played Sylvia, a lady crook, and her two accomplices, Roy (Raymond Griffith) and Count Donelli (Wallace Beery), arrive in America to con the rubes with their mechanical chess player. Sylvia, however, falls for one of the intended victims, Dick Longworth (Matt Moore), a handsome detective. Learning that Roy is actually her brother and Count Donelli, alias Bill Hawkes, is the villain who murdered their father (Alfred Allen), Sylvia resolves to reform and marry Longworth. Browning, who had already earned a reputation for delivering offbeat suspense, drew a blank this time around. Filmed in and around Coney Island, NY, in the summer of 1922, White Tiger languished on a shelf for nearly a year before being released to predominantly negative reviews. White Tiger, the trade paper Moving Picture World complained, “is vague in purpose and passive in mood.” Priscilla Dean, who had blossomed under Browning’s direction in such blockbuster fare as The Virgin of Stamboul (1920) and Under Two Flags (1922), saw her career decline following the release of White Tiger. ~ Hans J. That version appears on DECADE and GREATEST, Duran Duran’s two singles compilations. Critically drubbed upon release, SEVEN AND THE RAGGED TIGER holds up better than many of Duran Duran’s other efforts. |

The Sleeping Tiger – B&W $5.99 The direction of The Sleeping Tiger was credited to Victor Hanbury, but this was actually a pseudonym for the blacklisted Joseph Losey, whose first British film this was. Alexander Knox stars as psychiatrist Clive Esmond, who believes that he can stem the criminal tendencies of young fugitive from justice Frank Clements (Dirk Bogarde). To this end, Esmond hides Clements in his own home. At first hostile towards the handsome crook, Esmond’s wife Glenda (Alexis Smith) gradually warms up to her house guest, and before long she and Clements are casting lustful glances at one another. She intends to run off with Clements and make a new life for herself, when suddenly he decides that he actually wants to reform. Robinson plays a Portuguese tuna boat skipper–the self-styled “best dam’ fisherman in the Pacific”–who years earlier had lost his hand to a shark while rescuing best friend Richard Arlen. Robinson promises to look after the daughter (Zita Johann) of a recently deceased crew member. He proposes marriage; she accepts, more out of gratitude than love. The girl eventually falls for Robinson’s pal Arlen, who wants to break off the relationship before Robinson gets hurt. But Robinson catches the lovers together, and vows to kill Arlen. In attempting to throw his ex-friend to the sharks, Robinson is accidentally pulled overboard to his own death. For Your Height Only was shot in the Philippines by Eddie Nicart. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Challenge of the Tiger Challenge of the Tiger is one of the more notorious members of the “Bruce-sploitation” subgenre of martial arts movies, a loose label referring to exploitative quickies that cashed in on the untimely death of Bruce Lee. Such films often featured a lookalike martial artist billed with a name and likeness close to that of Bruce Lee and Challenge of the Tiger doesn’t disappoint in this respect — it stars one Bruce Le, who also directs this bizarre outing. Le plays C.I.A. agent Wong Leung, who teams up with fellow agent Richard Cannon (played by European exploitation star Richard Harrison) to keep the forces of evil from getting their hands on a serum that makes its users sterile. The film uses this premise as springboard for plenty of sex and violence, including such memorable highlights as Harrison playing tennis with a bevy of topless women (in slow motion, no less) and Le using his martial arts skills to fight a bull. Between the premise and such scenes, Challenge of the Tiger has earned a legendary reputation amongst fans of exploitation fare. Along with a handful of black bears and cougars, Hill keeps twenty-four tigers in his backyard — he’s obtained a breeder’s license and sells baby tigers (which can fetch over $100,000 each) in order to support the upkeep of his other animals. Hill clearly loves his animals and cares for them, but he keeps his tigers in makeshift cages located in a residential district, and a number of the folks living around him worry about what could happen if the animals ever get loose. Eventually, federal authorities cancelled Hill’s breeding licenses, and when an inspection by the Department of Natural Resources found that his facilities were not up to code, he was given the news that he could only keep three of the tigers.
