Sophie Scholl: The Final Days – Widescreen Subtitle $24.99 Filmmaker Marc Rothemund utilizes long-buried historical records to reconstruct the last six days in the life of renowned German anti-Nazi activist Sophie Scholl (Julia Jentsch) in an Academy Award-nominated feature that earned star Julia Jentsch a Best Actress award at both the 2005 Lolas and the 2005 Berlin International Film Festival. The year is 1943 and Adolf Hitler’s devastating march across Europe has resulted in the formation of the White Rose, an underground resistance movement born in Munich and dedicated to the fall of the Third Reich. Despite being one of the only female members in the White Rose movement, Sophie Scholl’s conviction is strong and her will unbreakable. Eventually arrested by the Gestapo for distributing pamphlets on campus alongside her brother Hans, Sophie boldly maintains her ground by calling for freedom and personal responsibility and never once backing down even in the face of certain, inescapable death. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

Heroes $14.99 Compact disc buyers who purchased Andreas Scholl’s disc of Handel arias on Harmonia Mundi (HMC 901685) barely a month before HEROES was released may wonder why they might need the present recital, with its further helping of Handel. One listen will stop the wondering! The key is the non-Handel portion of the program. That Scholl is excellent in baroque music is well-established by his recordings for Harmonia Mundi. But with selections by Hasse, Gluck, and a young Mozart, he demonstrates his talent for later music as well.’Mitridate’ and ‘Ascanio in Alba’ were written by Mozart in his teens for Italian theaters, and were met with great acclaim. In the process of composing, he worked with the singers of the theaters, tailoring the music to their demands. Scholl brings two of the results to life with great flair, and his rendition of “Venga pur, minacci e frema” brings the disc to a fitting close. Throughout the program, Scholl’s tone and technique are aptly suited to the repertoire; sweet and smooth when necessary, elsewhere brilliant without being strident. Roger Norrington and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment provide excellent period-instrument accompaniment. |

Countertenors - $14.99 This episode of London Weekend Television’s acclaimed, long-running documentary series The South Bank Show (hosted by the iconic Melvyn Bragg) discusses the phenomenon of countertenor singing, where adult male singers perform pieces from the classical repertoire in the mezzo-soprano, contralto or soprano ranges. Vocalists who appear in this program and discuss the phenomenon at length include Andreas Scholl, Michael Chance, James Bowman and Jimmy Somerville; as an added bonus, the program features a countertenor concert where Bowman, Chance and Scholl perform works by such classical composers as Ford, Handel, Bach and Dowland. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi |

Ombra Mai Fu $17.99 For OMBRA MAI FU, countertenor Andreas Scholl and the Berlin Academy for Ancient Music have devised an aria recital with a twist: rather than an hour and a quarter of one da capo aria after another, they have included a selection of orchestral music from Handel’s operas. Thus, the disc begins with the overture to ‘Admeto’ and ends with the “Alexander’s Feast” concerto grosso and has a small suite from ‘Radamisto’ in the middle. The two ‘Giulio Cesare’ arias are separated by a brief gigue, as if to allow the ear to clear between them. The orchestra shines throughout, both with and without Scholl, and the singer sounds completely at ease with the ensemble. ‘Va tacito’ is particularly notable, as it is practically a duet for voice and horn; Scholl and hornist Christian-Friedrich Dallmann execute it in an attractive and elegant manner.Scholl is in excellent voice here, bringing his sweet tone to some of Handel’s loveliest music, including the title track, sometimes better known as Handel’s “Largo.” His countertenor sound may not quite be that of the castrati Handel wrote for, but it is worlds away from the modern contraltos who are more familiar in this repertoire. |

Partenope (Concerto Copenhagen/Royal Danish Opera) – Widescreen Subtitle AC3 Dolby Dts $19.99 Georg Friedrich Handel’s 1730 opera Partenope marked an anomaly in the composer’s catalogue, with its overtly comic overtones. It tells of the rivalry between two princes for the marital hand of Queen Partenope, the founder of Naples, Italy – and the various complications that ensue. Though rarely performed after the early 18th century, Partenope experienced a much-publicized revival in 2008, thanks to the joint efforts of the Royal Danish Opera and the Concerto Copenhagen. That production appears in this release; it stars Inger Dam-Jensen in the title role, Andreas Scholl as Arsace, Christophe Dumaux as Amindo and Tuva Semmingsen as Rosmira. The Concerto Copenhagen provides musical accompaniment under the baton of maestro Lars Ulrik Mortensen, Francisco Negrin directs for the stage, and Louis D?sir? did the sets and costume design. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi |
