While Laura doesn’t mind if Marty joins in, she and her partners seems to be enjoying themselves enough that’s he feels like a fifth wheel, since Laura seems to have much clearer ideas about female eroticism than he does. New axeman Eric Chandler delivers solid work and suits the band’s style quite well, but he lacks Weekday’s undertow of sloppy genius, and while the songs on Ragged Soul were pure meat, this disc seems to have a bit of filler here and there. But if Ragged Soul was a great album, A Little Sex and Death is a very good one, and Pat Todd, always one of rock’s great bellowers, never sounds less than thoroughly committed throughout. Confusion Is Sex [LP] $24.98 Abrasive and archaic, theatrical and confrontational, Confusion Is Sex marks the opening strides that Sonic Youth made during their long slog through the American underground scene of the ’80s. And yes, this album is underground if anything — it’s lo-fi to the point of tonal drabness, as the instruments seem to ring out in only one tone, that of screechy noise. Yet that tone in itself is part of the album’s style, which is one of antithesis. The album isn’t comprised of songs but rather soundscapes, while the instruments are your traditional guitar-bass-drums-vocals lineup but are performed most untraditionally. Taken as a whole, Confusion Is Sex is a spellbinding listen, especially the first time through. If you’re a bona fide Sonic Youth fan, chances are you’ll find it especially spellbinding — the more of the band’s albums you’ve heard, the better. However, if you’re unfamiliar with the band, or a casual fan at most, chances are you’re going to be thoroughly tested — this is not an easy album to enjoy. As inaccessible as it may be, however, Confusion Is Sex is a cornerstone of Sonic Youth’s career, their true opening salvo toward underground heroism, though miles and miles away from such highly regarded albums as Daydream Nation (1988) or Dirty (1992). ~ Jason Birchmeier |

Sex Machine [Time Music] $11.99 Although the CD was supposedly “Recorded live at home in Augusta, Georgia with his bad self,” these recordings come from two different sources: a live concert recorded at Augusta’s Bell Auditorium in 1969, and a series of studio recordings that were doctored with audience noises and applause. The record, long considered a soul classic, actually features two different bands. The concert recordings feature Brown’s band from the 1960s, while the studio songs feature Brown’s then-new band, powered by Bootsy Collins on bass and Pelps “Catfish” Collins on guitar.Whether these recordings are “live” or not is really not the point; Brown has never sung a calculated note in his life, and one would be hard-pressed to distinguish whether one of Brown’s trademark howls was recorded in a studio or onstage. His scat singing on “Brother Rapp” sure sounds live. As the furious, barely one-minute-long “I Got the Feelin’” segues into the pure funky adrenaline rush of “Give it Up or Turnit A Loose,” it is nearly impossible to keep still. The groove is that infectious. Surprisingly, the title track is not the hit single version of “Sex Machine,” but rather an extended, more leisurely rendition. |

Language. Sex. Violence. Other? $47.99 Welsh trio Stereophonics’ fifth album dishes up seriously powerful hard rock that distinguishes itself in sound and attack from the band’s earlier releases. With the exception of a few cuts (the pulsing ballad “Rewind,” the expansive “Lolita”), LANGUAGE. SEX. VIOLENCE. OTHER? packs a remarkably ferocious punch. No one would claim Stereophonics are breaking new musical ground here, yet their combination of post-grunge (bringing to mind Foo Fighters and Alice in Chains) and tuneful Britpop (a la the Stone Roses and Oasis) is synthesized in a fresh, convincing way.The opening track, “Superman,” builds on an edgy, repetitive rhythm and two voices, one mid-range and one falsetto, before launching into the crunching rock verses of “Doorman,” which downshifts to an understated, slinky chorus. The near-danceable groove of “Brother” provides the perfect backdrop for frontman Kelly Jones’s fierce, raw-throated singing. The production–pristine, razor-sharp, and full of lush detail–sends every guitar solo and drum fill straight through the listener’s brain. This is glossy hard rock that has all the right elements, and is stylish and well-packaged enough to seduce at first listen. |
