The Best of the Del Vikings [Collectables 2005] $6.99 A mid-’60s reissue of the group’s single sides, this includes their first two Top 40 hits, “Come Go With Me” and “Whispering Bells.” It’s an above-par set of ’50s doo wop, in this case using a typical ’50s instrumental backing style. The hits are their best songs, but several others rise above doo wop clich?s with interesting lyrics or frenzied arrangements. The group scores further points by switching leads between a smooth baritone and a nasal tenor. However, about half the tracks are indistinguishable from any other doo wop set and don’t sustain the listener’s interest. ~ Steven Knowlton |

Greatest Hits from the Bong $9.99 Although Cypress Hill’s heyday was in the early 1990s, the Los Angeles-based hip-hop act managed to have a surprisingly long-lived career in one form or another. (Nasal-voiced rapper B-Real is the group’s only consistent member.) While these spliffheads are perhaps best known for initial hits like the street-tough “How I Could Just Kill a Man” and the wheezing, squealing anthem “Insane in the Brain,” Cypress Hill also explored its Hispanic roots (“Latin Lingo”) and ventured into nu-metal territory (the guitar-heavy “Rock Superstar”).In addition to the aforementioned tracks, this 2005 compilation also includes an energetic reggaeton version of “Latin Thugs” that, like the original, features an appearance by Puerto Rican star Tego Calderon. Though the collection could have benefited from a few rarities (particularly the group’s JUDGMENT NIGHT soundtrack collaborations with Pearl Jam and Sonic Youth), GREATEST HITS FROM THE BONG is a commendable overview of this perennial hip-hop act. |

Guilty $22.99 A massive single from one of the bands from the Johnny’s Entertainment stables, V6′s Guilty starts out with the title track, a bouncing bit of standardized pop. It’s complete with all of the necessary elements — a short rap break, a short instrumental break on the requisite Casio keyboards, a heartfelt ballad portion. It has an interesting chorus delivery thrown in, using a start-and-stop vocal style that sets it apart from similar material a bit, but it fails to garner a lot of interest beyond this. The attendant B-side is rather lackluster, but follows decently enough. On the main release version of the single, an additional two songs are added in — a very slightly jazzy number in “Medicine” that appears aimed at trying something new, but tends to fall over the nasal vocals of the second soloist, and a slightly more rousing, rock-tinged piece that shows some promise. Finally, instrumental versions of all the tracks are included at the end, plausibly for karaoke purposes. The single itself doesn’t have much to offer beyond previous releases from the band and the subgenre, but fans should be thrilled to have the newest dose nonetheless. ~ Adam Greenberg |

The Renaissance [LP] $15.98 Q-Tip’s 1999 solo debut, AMPLIFIED, was perhaps too party-oriented, too pop-influenced, too strayed from straightforward hip-hop, to have pleased die-hard A Tribe Called Quest fans. After nine years of the genre’s evolution, which saw a handful of experimenters (i.e., Andre 3000, Kanye West, Pharrel Williams) running with Tip’s instincts to great mainstream success, the positivistic, soft soul-based hip-hop sound purveyed by the nasal-voiced Tribe frontman now seems a whole lot closer to rap conventions.Tip’s second official solo release, THE RENAISSANCE, has been a long time coming and is a welcome breath of fresh air. The man once known as the Abstract Poetic lets his complex lyrical intuitions run wild as he spits some of his most intricate free-associated verses since his Tribe days. Entirely self-produced (save for one gem, “Move,” from the late J Dilla), THE RENAISSANCE relies on spacey jazz grooves, looping guitar lines, uplifting soul samples, and melodically suave vocal work courtesy of guests Norah Jones, D’Angelo, Amanda Diva, Raphael Saadiq, and, of course, Tip himself. THE RENAISSANCE is both nostalgic and forward-looking–one of the most rewarding and well-rounded albums of 2008. |

Labor Days $13.99 Personnel includes: Aesop Rock, Illogic, C Rayz Walz.Producers: Aesop Rock, Blockhead, Omega One.Every once in a while an MC comes along who has the ability to reaffirm listeners’ faith in hip-hop as a medium for intelligent, poetic, personal expression. Aesop Rock is one such MC, and LABOR DAYS is his defining statement. A flagship artist of the underground label Def Jux, Aesop Rock brings a style that is blisteringly fast, impossibly dense, and overflowing with metaphors, images, puns, references, and narratives. Rock’s voice and attack–a rapid-fire, somewhat nasal monotone–borrows from Kool Keith and Eminem, yet his highly literate rhymes are uniquely his own.Aesop Rock’s music is the antithesis of flashy, R&B-based commercial hip-hop, and his politically conscious, culturally aware lyrics are galaxies removed from the thug/gangster themes of hardcore rap. Intriguing samples, featuring instruments like flute and sitar, flesh out the beats, but this is lyric-centered hip-hop, and Rock gives us plenty to absorb. Absorbing character-based narratives (“No Regrets”) and slicing, alliterative tunes (“Daylight,” with its infectious, memorable chorus) are testaments to the rapper’s sophisticated lyrical superiority. |

Triangulation Station (Japan) $49.99 A core member of Souls of Mischief, the quartet of rappers at the heart of the Bay Area underground rap collective known as the Hieroglyphics Imperium (along with Del tha Funkee Homosapien), Opio has also maintained a low-profile solo career. His fourth solo album, 2005′s Triangulation Station, is his best. A mixture of (mostly) laid-back beats, with varied and interesting samples layered over a base of live instruments, the album is dominated throughout by Opio’s inimitable voice. Possessing a piercing, nasal instrument that’s as unique as Snoop Dogg’s but much less limited, Opio is equally capable of nimble, speedy delivery of tricky rhymes (the opening self-celebration “Viva Main Vein!!!”) and a more aggressive, hectoring delivery that he uses on politically charged material like “What’s Wrong With This Picture,” a pointed diatribe against the lack of independent thought in the mass media. Guest stars, including Del, the rest of Souls of Mischief, and other members of the Hieroglyphics crew chime in but never dominate the proceedings. This is Opio’s album all the way, and on songs like the brilliant “For Those Who Don’t Know” (built on an ear-grabbing vintage synth hook and old-school turntables), he displays all of his production, lyrical, and vocal talents at their fullest. ~ Stewart Mason |

Solid Guild [LP] $10.98 The Joggers: Murphy Kasiewicz, Ben Whitesides (vocals, guitar); Darrell Bourque (vocals, bass); Jake Morris (vocals, drums). On their debut album, Solid Guild, the Joggers craft a sound that fits in perfectly with their fellow Star Time labelmates and alumni. Their sharply hooky guitars, moody-yet-bouncy melodies, and shouty, slightly nasal vocals recall both the French Kicks and, especially, the Walkmen. On songs like “I’m Not Convinced” and “Oriental Alarms,” singer Ben Whitesides could be a dead ringer for the Walkmen’s Hamilton Leithauser, while the rest of the Joggers have an appealingly shambling approach that also recalls that band, albeit with less theatricality and more hooks. None of this means that the Joggers are derivative; it’s just that they’re another perfect expression of the Star Time sound. Besides, you can never have too much angular-yet-catchy, post-punk-inspired indie rock, especially when it’s as engaging as Solid Guild is. Most of the album finds the Joggers bouncing around to keep from falling apart, as on “Hot Autism” and “Every Other Word,” but they start the album on an atmospheric note with “Loosen Up,” which boasts surprisingly intricate guitars and sleigh bells; and the three-part harmonies on “Back to the Future” and “Neon Undercarriage” add a little romantic flair. A few slightly samey tracks keep Solid Guild from brilliance, but overall, it’s a strong, entertaining first album. ~ Heather Phares |

Trash We’d Love $22.99 When two bands sound similar, it’s a common thing; when their careers go the same way, that’s just eerie. Ellegarden spent a decade on challenging blink-182 at their own game; then Tom DeLonge left to form Angels & Airwaves, which played a more earnest version of the same style — and now, a couple of years later, Ellegarden’s Takeshi Hosomi does the same with Hiatus. But then again, such parallels are superficial: DeLonge did a sideways shift from Green Day to U2, and Hiatus is more of a natural progression for Hosomi. There are enough similarities to confuse Hiatus with Ellegarden on the first listen: the music still relies on melodic punkish guitars, fast tempos, and Hosomi’s distinct nasal voice — but Hiatus add some new elements, too. A few metal riffs here and there and plenty of piano thrown right into the middle of a catchy rock mix (and even a fairly negligible piano-only ballad, “Little Odyssey”) don’t qualify for a paradigm change, but enable subtle songwriting changes: the tunes are more epic and serious than ever before. No more songs about pizza or being late for a concert; Hiatus trade the juvenile carelessness and romanticism for an emo-ish alt-rock sound in the vein of Jimmy Eat World and, among J-rockers, Straightener — which is a very good band to set sights on. Hiatus still sound adolescent, but never angsty and whiny, and, most importantly, the songs are really catchy, and not in a na?ve punkish way. They’re not dethroning Straightener in the near future, and if Trash We’d Love had come out under Ellegarden’s banner, no one would have fainted in surprise, but if a change of moniker was needed to produce an album this enjoyable, there’s nothing to complain about. ~ Alexey Eremenko |

Since its breakthrough album, 1993′s BLACK SUNDAY, its drug and gun-related lyrics have helped it maintain a hardcore fan base. SKULL & BONES is split into two separate CDs, the “Skull” disc being the dedicated rap segment, with “Bones” devoted to rock.Synthesized orchestral strings and kick drum propel B-Real’s distinct nasal rap on “(Rap) Superstar,” which lays bare the pitfalls awaiting artists who attain their dreams and make it big in the music industry. B-Real and Sen Dog’s lyrical skills are on display throughout this set, notably on the rebellious, attitude-driven “What U Want From Me.” The second disc features members of Fear Factory, Rage Against The Machine, Downset, and SX10, with Cypress’ Bobo on drums. The group’s quick raps flow over a monstrous sound that puts most rap pretenders to shame. “Get Out Of My Head” is a speedy, riffing number with a great hook, while “Dust” pays homage to the Anthrax/Public Enemy collaboration of a decade ago. SKULL & BONES 2 CD set will satisfy longtime Cypress fans while also appealing to a new metal audience. |

Ways & Means $22.99 Personnel: Paul Kelly (vocals, acoustic guitar); Dan Luscombe (electric guitar, slide guitar, keyboards); Dan Kelly (electric guitar, banjo, fiddle, background vocals); Graham Lee (pedal steel guitar); Bruce Haymes (piano); Bill McDonald (synthesizer, bass); Peter Luscombe (drums, percussion).Recorded at Sing Sing Studios, Melbourne, Australia.Don’t be mislead by the Ennio Morricone spaghetti Western soundtrack-styled instrumental that starts Aussie singer/songwriter Paul Kelly’s 13th disc. His first release since 2001′s Nothing but a Dream is a 21-track double set that is otherwise similar to his previous albums and finds Kelly working to his compositional strengths. That’s not to slight his canny ability to portray distinctive characters within the context of a four-minute pop song, or how he mines his seemingly bottomless well of melodies. But those who are already fans will find this a familiar yet enjoyable collection of quality songs, sung with Kelly’s slightly nasal everyman voice and played with clean, precise, and rugged professionalism by his sturdy band. Disc one boasts the more direct, upbeat tunes, while the second is moody and more sedate. As usual with double albums, these could have been combined into a phenomenal single, but the differing sounds make a strong case for the expanded package. In fact, disc two’s laconic approach is best digested whole, with the melodies intertwining to produce an affecting portrait of Kelly’s mellower side. The first platter’s rockers such as the Tom Petty-ish “Won’t You Come Around” sport some of his most memorable choruses. “Cryin’ Shame” is an unusually dirty, swampy riff-based blues rocker that sounds like it was recorded in Mississippi with the Fat Possum crew. But “These Are the Days” is classic Kelly, a ringing mid-tempo ballad with touching, detailed lyrics about approaching middle age and looking for commitment, sung with a perfect balance of pathos and detachment. Other than a few twists, he’s not radically expanding his net. But with songs as well-written, superbly played, and inviting as these, Kelly shows no signs of slowing down either. Fans will be thrilled with this expansive album, but even newcomers could start here and work backward through Kelly’s extensive and consistently impressive catalog. ~ Hal Horowitz |

New Dark Age [Bonus Tracks] $24.99 Taking their name from a stove employed to heat saunas (huh?), Finland’s Kiuas convey similar notions of perplexity with their third album, The New Dark Age, which despite its title’s implicit threat of hellfire and brimstone, stays well away from the more extreme strains of Scando-metal (black, death), and delves instead into an uncommonly experimental brand of power metal. What’s more, whereas most power metal bands seem content to rip off Iron Maiden at twice the normal speed (and with half of the creativity), Kiuas consistently challenge themselves and their listeners to shake things up — even while staying in touch with that genre’s more commercial sensitivities, via frequently conspicuous hooks, anthemic choruses, and ultra-flashy guitar and synthesizer solos. Most notably, Kiuas grooves like few of their countrymen can (or care to, at least), forging surprisingly syncopated riffs into strong fare like the title cut, “The Decaying Doctrine,” and “The Summoning,” and suggesting theirs is a far less insular outlook than much of their homegrown competition. More compelling evidence of this can be found in album standout “To Excel and Ascend,” which repeatedly shuffles its metallic foundation with acoustic guitars inspired by Indian ragas, while clashing waves of harsh growling against Ilja Jalkanen’s predominantly melodic vocalizing (gruff croaks are also used to good effect on the aptly named “Kiuas War Anthem” and the nod to Gothenburg death metal, “Of Sacrifice, Loss and Reward”). Closing epic “The Wanderer’s Lamentation” features a similarly impressive array of soft/hard sounds and moods, as well as discreet nods to Finland’s ever popular folk music; but these are then taken a little bit too far on the somewhat flat, all-acoustic “After the Storm,” featuring oddly nasal vocals. Also not quite up to snuff, the classic metal building blocks of “Conqueror” and “Black Rose Withered” are so devoid of surprises, they feel positively quaint compared to the above — although they may help to convert straightforward power metal fans to Kiuas’ idiosyncrasies. Needless to say, though, it’s the band’s far more prevalent compositional risk-taking that makes The New Dark Age a recommended entry point into Finnish heavy metal — somewhere between the extreme black and Viking metal marauders, and the power metal and AOR softies. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia |

Napoleon Dynamite/The Revenge of the Nerds [2 Discs] - $12.99 Includes:Revenge of the Nerds (1984), MPAA Rating: R Napoleon Dynamite (2004), MPAA Rating: PG Revenge of the Nerds Revenge of the Nerds is the juvenile sex comedy perhaps most synonymous with the 1980s, alternating gags and scantily clad women with a power to the underdogs mentality that prompted three sequels. The handsome jocks of Alpha Beta, led by Stan (Ted McGinley), run Adams College, which means that when they burn down their house after a stunt involving grain alcohol and an open flame, they kick a bunch of socially inept freshman out of their dorm and into the gymnasium. But sleeping on cots is only the beginning of their worries, as the so-called nerds soon become the target of pranks by Alpha Beta, assisted by Betty (Julie Montgomery) and the gorgeous gals of Pi Delta Pi. Instead of taking the abuse sitting down, the displaced freshman, led by Gilbert (Anthony Edwards) and Lewis (Robert Carradine), buy a ramshackle house, affiliate themselves with the only national chapter who will take them (the all-black Lambda Lambda Lambda), and use their superior intellect to launch a counterstrike. The bespectacled but loveable geeks set up surveillance cameras in the Pi bathroom and put liquid heat in the athletes’ jock straps, then draft a sister sorority of misfits (Omega Mu) to strengthen their resources. The frats quickly become bitter rivals, and the goal is to win the annual fraternity decathlon, which involves such feats as a burping contest and a go-cart race, with bragging rights (and perhaps peace of mind) at stake. Look for John Goodman and future thirtysomething cast member Timothy Busfield in small roles, and expect a torrent of nasal laughter. ~ Derek Armstrong, Rovi Napoleon Dynamite The directorial debut of filmmaker Jared Hess, who also co-wrote the screenplay, Napoleon Dynamite is a quirky, offbeat comedy set in the small Idaho town of Preston. Jon Heder stars in the titular role, a carrot-topped oddball with a decidedly eccentric family that includes his llama-loving, dune-buggy enthusiast grandmother. The story centers on the local high school’s race for class president. Using some nontraditional means, Napoleon is determined to help his pal Pedro (Efrem Ramirez) run a winning campaign and defeat popular girl Summer (Haylie Duff). Also starring The Drew Carey Show’s Diedrich Bader, Napoleon Dynamite premiered at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi |

Little Amber Bottles $9.99 If We Can’t Trust the Doctors’ dusty drama brought the members of Blanche acclaim and opportunities: the band supported Loretta Lynn on Van Lear Rose, toured with the White Stripes and Calexico, and Dan and Tracee Miller appeared in I Walk the Line. Though these commitments — not to mention Little Jack Lawrence’s stint with the Raconteurs — delayed the band’s second album, it was clearly time well spent. Little Amber Bottles is the work of an even richer, more experienced band, pairing the masterful atmospheres of Blanche’s debut with powerful songwriting and outstanding production. Less self-conscious and more versatile than they were on If We Can’t Trust the Doctors, Blanche switch easily from mood pieces like the swampy instrumental “Exordium” to “The World I Used to Be Afraid Of,” a darkly witty, downright rollicking murder ballad with a heart full of darkness and a twinkle in its eye. Just why the song’s character is so cheerful and how he won his beloved makes for a typically twisted, and wonderfully written, tale from Dan Miller. Little Amber Bottles tackles many of the same themes that Blanche delved into on If We Can’t Trust the Doctors — faith, love, and redemption (or the lack thereof) — but this time the songs are more urgent. The album is full of stories of outrage, big and small, personal and universal: “Last Year’s Leaves” is an elegant and bitter kiss-off; on “A Year from Now,” Miller insists that “all these tears will help someday,” but sounds unconvinced as the song grows increasingly turbulent. “No Matter Where You Go”‘s character sketch of a hopeless narcissist is as subtly insistent as a nagging conscience, but “What This Town Needs” is blunt and brash, hitting home big questions like “How can you sleep at night?” with equally big guitars. Musically speaking, Little Amber Bottles casts a wide net, touching on everything from punk to gospel to bluegrass. Recorded in Nashville with Mark Nevers and in Detroit with Dave Feeny, these songs show off Blanche’s abilities to their fullest. The Millers may have played Mr. and Mrs. Luther Perkins in Walk the Line, but on the album’s duets, they feel like Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra. “I’m Sure of It” is a study in contrasts, pitting Dan Miller’s nasal sneer against Tracee’s breathy drawl as the song goes from simmering verses to roiling, rocking choruses. The title track’s narcotic glow and Feeny’s delicate, molten pedal steel (which is stellar throughout Little Amber Bottles) nod to countrypolitan’s rootsy glamour, while “I Can’t Sit Down” is joyfully old-timey, all close harmonies and revival-ready hollers. Blanche’s cover of “Child of the Moon” transforms the Rolling Stones’ psych pop classic into a winsome, slow-motion waltz so successfully that they might want to think about doing a full-fledged covers album. Crucially, all these nods to Blanche’s influences end up enhancing the band’s uniqueness; rooted equally in the traditional and more experimental sides of Americana, co |
