Vision - $24.99 Margarethe von Trotta, one of the most celebrated female directors in the German cinema, pays homage to another remarkable woman in this screen biography of 12th century Renaissance woman Hildegard von Bingen. Hildegard (Barbara Sukowa) came to live at the Disibodenberg abbey when she was a youngster, and grew up under the watchful but compassionate eye of Jutta the Holy (Mareile Blendl). In her teens, Hildegard became a nun and was known among her peers for her generous nature and desire to help others; she developed a talent for formulating herbal medicine as well as gift for composing music, and after three decades she was selected to become a magistra at the abbey. Hildegard was born during a time when women were expected to serve and not to preach, but she fearlessly began speaking to others about her religious visions, which she used as a vehicle to share lessons in faith in a manner that circumvented the rules. Hildegard also fearlessly denounced the violent self-abasement that was common among holy men and women of her day, believing that a faith born of kindness and devotion was more valuable than that which came from fear and pain. While Hildegard won may friends through her work, she also gained more than a few enemies, and while some denounced her for not restricting herself to the traditional role of a woman in the church, others contended that her holy visions were not the work of the Lord, but of the Devil. Hoodoo Gurus: Tunnel Vision - $14.99 Long proud to wear the “postmodern” tag, the Aussie college rock-alternative rock band The Hoodoo Gurus formed in 1981, and culled elements from virtually every sphere of American pop culture. Although not outright satirists along the lines of The Tubes or 10cc, their music (with catchy songs penned by Dave Faulkner and a heavier-than-usual reliance on lead guitar lines and the omission of bass) did sport great wit and clever invention. The sound bore closest comparison to R.E.M. and The Smithereens. Faulkner, James Baker, Rod Radalj and Kimble Rendall founded the band in 1981, with the latter two replaced by Brad Sheppard and Clyde Bramley within a year. After two EPs – 1983′s Stoneage Romeos and 1985′s Mars Needs Guitars – the group culled its broadest following with 1987′s Blow Your Cool. They disbanded in the late nineties, but reteamed in 2004. The home video release Hoodoo Gurus: Hoodoo Gurus – Tunnel Vision offers an assemblage of thirty Hoodoo music videos, including “Bittersweet,” “Middle of the Land,” “Poison Pen,” “Generation Gap,” and “Miss Freelove ’69,” as well as sixteen vintage live performances, such as “Death Ship,” “Tojo,” “Leilani,” “In the Wild,” and “The Right Time.” It also includes a documentary, “Be My Guru,” that compiles interviews with band members, fans, and groupies, along with additional vintage concert clips. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi |

29:29 Split Vision [LP] $15.98 Perhaps the Subhuman’s most sophisticated release, 29:29 Split Vision has quite a variety of music for a band whose songs often all sound the same. The Subhumans even pull off a nearly eight-minute-long tune with a ska beat, “Worlds Apart.” “Walls of Silence” is a great, bouncy, almost danceable number, which covers the usual Subhumans’ themes of apathy, unity, and revolution. “Somebody’s Mother” also attacks apathy, and though the music is excellent, the lyrics are generic. (There were too many punk songs from England in the ’80s about how watching TV and reading tabloid newspapers are bad things.) The Subhumans, though quite eloquent compared to many other punk bands, often took on black-and-white issues. It’s not as if any of their fans would defend conformity or religious wars — subjects of a couple of their songs. An example of this is the song “Think for Yourself,” which basically makes an argument for thinking for yourself. But this tune rocks with its reverby guitar and singer Dick Lukas outraged yelping. As far as their music goes, 29:29 Split Vision (recorded after the band officially broke up) is probably their most mature work. ~ Adam Bregman |
