Help with stretching ears?

I'm trying to stretch your ears. I have 16 now, I expected my friend of 14 years, but I figured what the heck 12 years are not so great, so I tried to put it in the middle and walk without pain or anything. Before everything started 14, but they are infected because candles were stupid. I thought I'd go slowly and start at age 16. I was wondering what is best to use a lubricant? I've heard of people using Neosporin, Vaseline, soap, KY, and other things. These products are safe? I leaned against the most likely using Neosporin just because it sounds safer? And please, before answering, I know all about skipping classes and have a sterile environment and how to stretch. I was wondering about lubricants. : P Thanks in advance! :)

and never use acrylic to stretch because they're porous and lead to infection, also slowed the process. and no pain and continue to tear the piercing and get tissue scar or if it is bad enough that you get a rash that does not want. Never use a lubricant, because waiting for the right amount of time in between runs so when I go to the next size of their loans are the settings you want to use jojoba oil, if something good. Never use Vaseline as it traps bacteria and can cause infection. Never stretch with silicone case is very porous and can infect the ear and is irritated and the link to your skin, you may not leave unless it is removed surgically and damage your hearing A LOT. extends unevenly and the wrong way. (Just to force open the skin surrounding it, which is guaranteed to boot) is spread with candles and only wear titanium surgical steel plugs, or glass during healing. here's a small table for the waiting time for that their ears stay nice and healthy: drilling the first installment charges: approx 5 to 6 months 16g to 14g – 1 month 14g to 12g – 1 month 12g to 10g – 1.5 months 10g to 8 g – 2 months 8g 6g – 3 months 6 g 4 g – 3 months 2g 4g – 3 months to 2 g 0 g – 4 months 0g to 00g – 4 months if you have any questions, please email me, id be happy to help . : D

Magnetic Man

$24.99

The self-titled album from the pop-oriented dubstep production trio of Skream, Benga, and Artwork features the energetic singles “I Need Air” (featuring Angela Hunte), “Perfect Stranger” (featuring Katy B), and “Getting Nowhere” (featuring John Legend). Ms. Dynamite and Sam Franke are also involved with vocal contributions, as the three producers put some polish — occasionally to sterile effect — on an otherwise underground dance subgenre. At its best, the album is bracing, capable of winning over the cynics who are not particularly open-minded about crossover dance music. ~ Andy Kellman

Do Wrong Right [LP]

Do Wrong Right [LP]

$14.98

Most traditional bluegrass groups don’t spin stories about guys who put together “Power Point presentations about the girl he wanted to do.” But such is the rabble-rousing nature of DO WRONG RIGHT, which is highlighted by the Devil Makes Three’s banjo-based country strumming and, well, devilish streak–no doubt a product of self-proclaimed influences like Iron Maiden. And on songs like “Poison Trees,” they nail their formula to perfection, achieving what the Dave Matthews Band might have been had they stripped their global folk of its sterile flourishes.

Visually minded filmmaker Tarsem Singh returns to the director’s chair for the first time since The Cell (2000) with this psychologically complex tale of a hospitalized paraplegic with a curious knack for storytelling. Unable to free himself from his sterile confines, the immobile patient’s deepest fears form the basis of a dark story that he shares with his young companion — a little girl who visits his room as she recovers from a nasty fall. As the eerie tale unfolds, reality and fantasy gradually merge to form a strange world in which anything is possible. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Dr. Fugazzi – Widescreen Collector’s Dolby

$12.99

A successful young psychologist with a bright future on the horizon begins a dark descent into the most terrifying corners of her shattered psyche in director October Kingsley’s lurid psychological thriller. On the surface, Dr. Anna Fugazzi’s life couldn’t be better; she’s got a successful career, a devoted boyfriend, and a support system that’s second to none. Somewhere between Anna’s conscious and subconscious, however, lurks a devastating secret too awful to even imagine. In order to resolve this malevolent mystery, Anna will have to leave the safety net of her charmed life and travel back in time to the not-too-distant past. As Anna is haunted by dreadful hallucinations and strangely familiar voices, she begins to experience a vivid recurring dream that finds her repeatedly awakening in an unidentifiable white room. Now, the only way to escape the confines of this sterile lair is to journey inward and confront her lingering demons in a final, desperate bid to reclaim her slipping sanity. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

$39.99

Personnel includes: Dave Mason (vocals, guitar); Stevie Wonder, Graham Nash, George Harrison (vocals). After the debacle of the unauthorized release of the half-studio/half-live HEADKEEPER, Dave Mason left Blue Thumb Records in a huff and spent a bit of time in legal limbo before rebounding with 1973′s Columbia debut IT’S LIKE YOU NEVER LEFT. Mellower than Mason’s Blue Thumb work, these 10 songs recall the confessional singer-songwriter work of James Taylor or Joni Mitchell much more than they do the jazz-rock of Traffic’s contemporaneous releases, giving that much more reason why Mason didn’t participate in the group’s ’70s reunion. From the opening “Baby…Please” to the tender title track closing the album, Mason’s singing and playing are gently soulful. Importantly, the arrangements and production are nowhere near as sterile and slick as they would become on Mason’s later Columbia releases, giving the songs room to breathe.

Judah Johnson (EP)

Judah Johnson (EP)

$7.99

The self-titled debut EP from the Michigan quintet Judah Johnson finds the group engaging in patient, sterile-sounding glacial sweeps. While the band has a gift for melodic invention — parts of “Tongue Kiss on Ecuador” stand out as particularly striking — the songs are too fragmented and filtered, perhaps intentionally, to have much of an impact. The song structures are non-linear, not because it seems the music needs it, but because it seems the thing to do. In the subsequent Radiohead and Elliot Smith-influenced pastiche, the band has a hard time finding alternative methods of framing. Part of this stems from the earnestly low-mixed vocals of primary songwriter Daniel Johnson, whose singing-to-his-feet vocal approach loses its charm on record. Lyrically, he seems quite strong, offering complicated emotional tone poems. Unfortunately, it is almost universally impossible to hear what he is saying. ~ Jesse Jarnow

Candy Von Dewd -

Candy Von Dewd -

$5.99

This sexy and campy sci-fi parody, inspired by the candy-colored intergalactic extravaganzas of the late ’60s, is set in the year 2138 when the vast majority of men on Earth have become sterile. In a last-ditch effort to maintain the human presence in the universe, a handful of handsome and fertile astronauts are sent on a mission to find willing women on other planets. Making their way to the planet Latexploitation, the spacemen meet their match in the form of a bevy of no-nonsense women in leather and latex gear who hold the mission’s captain captive. But Amazon warrior Candy Von Dewd is sympathetic to the plight of the Earthmen and offers to help return the explorers to freedom. Candy Von Dewd was directed by low-budget auteur Jacques Boyreau, best known for the cult items Planet Manson and Hippy Porn. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Of Time and Tides: Guitar Recordings, Vol. 2 [LP]

Of Time and Tides: Guitar Recordings, Vol. 2 [LP]

$15.98

For his second full-album release, Nick Jonah Davis aims for an understated, reflective set of performances, acoustic guitar as slightly mysterious mood-setter. But it’s no sterile mood piece; throughout, whether it’s in his occasional count-offs or in the close-to-the-mike feel of the recording, it’s an album that feels in the moment, a private session one has eavesdropped on. There’s an air of the rough and immediate from the start on “Twiga,” where notes suddenly burst out from the main melody, and a midsong break into a sudden stop-start section feels like a series of hushed pauses. Much of Of Time and Tides eschews anything quite so melodramatic; Davis aims to make a mark, just in a gentler way. Song titles like “Nine Stones Close” help convey the sense of rural location captured at many points, but it’s the feeling of the music that remains key, as can also be heard on the sweet ramble of “Mari Christina.” At the album’s most bucolic, a song like “The Narrow Bridge” feels like the ultimate country summer afternoon that should be, sun over water and a peacefulness in the performance. Meanwhile, leading off “Nocturne” with a piano some time before guitar appears results in an unexpected, quietly moving synthesis, a late-night moodiness in more ways than one, something that the almost chilling feedback textures underneath “A Broken Circle” play up even more strongly. ~ Ned Raggett

When the concerned father of an autistic young girl decides to forcefully remove his daughter from the hospital where she is currently being treated, his mission is unexpectedly complicated by a horde of murderous creatures that seem to have found their way into our reality from some frightening parallel universe. It was supposed to be so simple: the father would locate his daughter and spring her from the hospital before the staff even knew what was happening. After getting trapped in the elevator on their way out, however, events take a horrifically grim turn as the doors open to reveal that the once sterile and bustling surroundings are now ominously silent and dank. With mutilated bodies strewn about and murderous gang of monsters stalking them through an endless maze of corroded hallways, the only remaining hope for the frightened father and daughter now lies in the affected mind of a little girl who may understand more about the situation than anyone realizes. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Otilia Rauda – Fullscreen Subtitle Dolby

$4.99

Acclaimed Mexican filmmaker Dana Rotberg returns to the screen following an eight year absence with this hypnotic drama about love and revenge. Set in a small village during the beginning of the 20th century, Otilia (Gabriela Canudas) is both blessed with a body that is the epitome of feminine perfection and cursed by an ugly mole that mars her beautiful face. The juxtaposition between fabulous beauty and disfigurement proves unsettling for the villagers and she grows up friendless, save the family’s hired hand Melqu?ades. Though most figured she would end up as a prostitute, she is married off to Isidro, the local police chief. Cruel and petty, this ogre of a man brutalizes her and eventually infects her with venereal disease, rendering her sterile. With the help of Melqu?ades, Otilia takes a series of lovers to spite her husband. One day, the wounded Ruben — a wanted outlaw — staggers onto her doorstep and immediately she is in love. Much to Melqu?ades’ chagrin, she harbors and tends to the criminal as her husband is out hunting for him. This film was screened at the 2001 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

Unknown World - B&W

Unknown World – B&W

$5.99

Assembled by the same production team responsible for the minor sci-fi classic Rocketship X-M, Unknown World isn’t quite in the same league as its predecessor. The plot is set in motion by Dr. Jeremiah Morley (Victor Kilian), who theorizes that mankind could save itself during a nuclear attack by resettling far beneath the earth’s surface. To prove his theory, Morley builds the Cyclotram, a combination drill and exploratory vehicle, with the financial assistance of playboy Wright Thompson (Bruce Kellogg), who insists upon joining the expedition to the earth’s core. After several hair-raising adventures, the Cyclotram and its surviving passengers reach a cavern nearly 2000 miles beneath the surface. The cavern contains all the necessities of survival save one: the atmosphere renders anyone living within its walls sterile. Deciding that it isn’t worth hiding in the center of the earth if only one generation will survive, the explorers endeavor to get back to the surface — but who will survive this journey? The obligatory female lead in Unknown World is played by Marilyn Nash, who’d been discovered by Charlie Chaplin for the 1947 film Monsieur Verdoux. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The Forsyte Saga -

The Forsyte Saga -

$49.99

The Forsyte Saga was a remake of the classic 1960s British miniseries which put the PBS anthology Masterpiece Theatre on the map. Whereas the original version covered all of John Galsworthy’s novels about the upper-crust Forsyte clan, requiring 26 episodes to do so, the remake took in only the first two books, running five episodes in Great Britain and seven episodes when it was exported to the U.S. (several sequels were, however, promised should this “trial balloon” prove successful). This was more than ample time to detail the fortunes and follies of the Forsytes as they made the sometimes painful transition from the Victorian to the Edwardian era. The focus was on frosty, tradition-bound Soames Forsyte (Damian Lewis), whose sincere but sterile relationship with his beloved wife Irene (Gina McKee) was complicated by Irene’s fondness for iconoclastic architect Bosinney (Ioan Gruffudd). And in another branch of the Forsyte family, Old Jolyon Forsyte (Corin Redgrave) was vexed by the bohemian lifestyle of his son Young Jolyon (Rupert Graves). Budgeted at ten million dollars and running approximately eight hours, the “new” Forsyte Saga debuted in the U.K. on April 7, 2002, and in the U.S. courtesy of PBS on October 6 of that same year. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Walkabout - Widescreen

Walkabout – Widescreen

$34.99

The contrast between modern, urban civilization and life in the natural world lies at the heart of Nicolas Roeg’s visually dazzling drama Walkabout. In broad outline, the plot might resemble a standard fish-out-of-water tale: two city children become stranded in the Australian outback, and struggle to find their way back to civilization with the help of a friendly aborigine boy. But Roeg and screenwriter Edward Bond are concerned with far more than the average wilderness drama, as a shocking act of violence near the story’s beginning makes clear. This is particularly true in regards to the relationship between the white children and the aborigine boy, who ultimately develops a troubled romantic attraction towards the older sister. Obviously intended as a statement on the exploitation of the natural world and native cultures by European civilization, the film nevertheless maintains an evocative vagueness that usually — but not always — favors poetry over didacticism. Most importantly, the film’s justifiably acclaimed cinematography is likely to sway even those who find fault with the film’s narrative and message. The shift between the sterile city images and the truly stunning, beautifully composed Australian landscapes provide the film’s single best argument, making the film a vivid and convincing experience. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi

Creepshow – Widescreen

$14.99

Two of the most venerable names in the horror field, author Stephen King and director George A. Romero, present this anthology of original twisted tales inspired by the E.C. horror comics of the 50′s and 60′s (themselves a more direct basis for the popular Tales from the Crypt TV series). The five stories are framed within the pages of a comic book which a boy’s insensitive father has thrown in the garbage. The first tale, “Father’s Day,” features a zombie patriarch returning to claim his Father’s Day cake; “The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill” stars King himself as a slack-jawed yokel whose discovery of a radioactive meteorite turns him into a walking weed; “Something to Tide You Over” presents a deadly-serious Leslie Nielsen as a cuckolded husband who plans an elaborate seaside revenge; “The Crate” unleashes its ferocious man-eating contents on the enemies of a meek college professor; and “They’re Creeping Up On You” pits obsessively-clean billionaire E.G. Marshall against a swarm of cockroaches in his sterile penthouse. The chapters are uniformly creative, filmed in garish comic-book colors, and Tom Savini’s makeup effects are quite memorable (particularly the monster from “The Crate”), though the campy treatment does become exhausting after two hours’ runtime. The final segment is the most impressive, thanks to Marshall’s over-the-top performance, though the planned scope of the cockroach invasion was drastically reduced (no doubt due to budget constraints). ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

The Bothersome Man -

$14.99

A 40-year-old man arrives in a mysteriously idyllic city with no memory of having traveled there, only to realize that there is something decidedly sinister about his emotionally sterile new home in director Jens Lien’s surreal, genre-jumping mystery. Shortly after arriving in the curiously colorless city, Andreas (Trond Fausa Aurvag) is presented with a new apartment and told to report to the office where his amiable new boss, H?vard (Johannes Joner), will provide him with all the details of his new accounting job. Friendship seems to come fast and flavorless in this new town, and no one ever seems to get too upset or too happy. It isn’t long before Andreas marries an attractive interior designer named Anne-Britt (Petronella Barker), and as the pair settle into a comfortable routine of emotionally vacant dinner parties, never-ending home improvement, and mechanical sex, the newly arrived citizen gradually begins to question why everyone seems so superficial, the food has no taste, and excessive alcohol intake fails to induce inebriation. As the ubiquitous “Caretakers” who preside over the city take note that their latest arrival just doesn’t seem to fit in, Andreas attempts a daring but failed escape. When Andreas meets the like-minded Hugo, who reveals that beautiful music streams out of a crack in the wall of his cellar, the pair quickly concoct a foolproof escape plan that is sure to succeed. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Sweden’s shadowy Mortuus first earned their underground black metal stripes with a 7″ single in 2005, but with 2007′s De Contemplanda Morte album, the duo go one step further and leave an arguably indelible mark on the scene. For you see, although their music positively drips at all times with black metal’s incomparably oppressive ambiance, sinister sounds, and deeply occult and nihilistic lyrical themes, the interesting thing about Mortuus is that their typical songs (e.g. “Penetrations of Darkness,” “Constant Descent of Seraphim,” etc.) actually feature ponderous pacing, lengthy guitar chords, and echoing growls reminiscent of death metal and doom. Even when they do make way for some momentary blastbeat and speed-picking activity, smashing into the rubble of their creations with the rage and force of a typhoon, other cuts like “Astral Pandemonium,” “Illumination of God” and “Rebirth in the Sterile Triad of Six,” astonishingly remain prevalently focused on lengthy, dread-filled funeral dirges. Which is all well and good (lest you happen to be a close-minded necro-black metal purist with no life), since the album’s long-winded climax “Supplication for the Demise of All: Withdrawal into the Lifeless Sanctum” is a real dark gem; evoking such nightmarish images of majestic ruin that it’s nefarious rewards alone are well worth the price of admission. Plus, given the fact that their previous 7″ single was originally planned to be their first and last release ever, there’s little chance of Mortuus passing this way again, so you may as well hear their rather unique perspective before De Contemplanda Morte 666-copy pressing runs out. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Unlike most bands, however, the trio remained active, touring the East Coast, with mastermind Randy Jackson fostering some low-key side projects (China Rain, Sign). Here and now, the one-two triumph of openers “Arabian Nights” and “Light of My Love” shows the boys haven’t missed a trick since the halcyon daze of ’80s AOR. As in Zebra’s signature single, “Who’s Behind the Door,” Jackson still ponders deep thoughts like “Why” (a veritable “Blackbird” rewrite) and “Who Am I” (a bizarre take on the Bible with animal rights sentiments similar to the earlier FM chestnut “Bears”). And only Jackson could create a cosmic, comic crack like “So I Dance.” Admittedly, the crass “Free” stands as one of his weaker moments, but Jackson soars everywhere else on Zebra IV: Freed from the sterile production marring the otherwise excellent 3.V, he pumps each tune with grandiosity while retaining his invaluable sense of melody. This vital component keeps Zebra dancing in the ruins of other post-pop/prog bands that search for vitality and marketability by sacrificing the simple hooks and passion that made them famous in the first place. Zebra is a proud dinosaur, and Zebra IV is an eminently listenable record of epic insignificance. Now here’s hoping Zebra V comes along a little faster. ~ Whitney Z. Gomes

A young girl finds friendship on the wrong side of the career tracks in this drama. Camelot Gardens is a “gated community” where wealthy people can purchase luxurious (if sterile) homes and a security force ensures that riffraff will be kept away from your door after nightfall. The Stockard family are new arrivals at Camelot Gardens; father Morton (Christopher McDonald) is a businessman who wants to go into politics, while mother Clare (Kathleen Quinlan) busies herself with affairs with younger men. Neither seems to have much time for their 10-year-old daughter Devon (Mischa Barton), who doesn’t care for children her own age; Devon’s uncle likes to entertain her with stories about a witch named Baba Yaga who lives in the forest, so one day she wanders into the nearby woods looking for Baba. Instead, she finds a trailer that’s home to Trent (Sam Rockwell), a 20-something free spirit who scrapes together a living by mowing the lawns of Camelot Gardens. Devon and Trent both have physical and emotional scars to deal with, and they soon become friends and confidantes; however, Devon’s parents become upset when they learn that their daughter’s best friend is a grown man, particularly one who lives in a trailer and does lawn maintenance for a living. Lawn Dogs won awards at a number of international film festivals in 1997, including the Stockholm Film Festival, the Montreal World Film Festival, and the Catalonian International Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

“W.R.” is pioneering sexologist Wilhelm Reich, whose precedent-breaking theories concerning carnal behavior and politics (including the invention of the orgone box) made him persona non grata in most psychoanalytic circles. By all accounts, Reich began his career brilliantly – as the next great successor to Freud and Jung; he then delved into extraordinarily controversial work that divided his critics, leading some to conclude that Reich had experienced a psychotic break from reality. Dusan Makavejev is the equally controversial Yugoslavian director fascinated by Reich’s theories. This essay film by Makavejev – his first major work – constitutes a witty, free-form riff on the director’s perception of Reichian philosophies as the basis of individual and collective sexual liberation. Makavejev elucidates the Reichian mindset via interviews with the doctor’s relatives and colleagues (we even hear from Reich’s barber!) Also illustrated is the ongoing conflict between the free-thinking disciples of W.R.’s sociopolitical attitudes and the adherents of sterile Stalinism. Over the course of the picture, Makavejev journeys to the U.S. and interviews such American sexual liberationists as Screw magazine editor Al Goldstein and Betty Dodson. Woven into the factual proceedings is a fictional plotline concerning the romance between Reich adherent Milena and uptight Soviet athlete Vladimir Ilyich. Though the film was never released in Makavejev’s native Yugoslavia, WR: Mysteries of the Organism firmly established the iconoclastic filmmaker’s international reputation. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Includes:For Your Height Only (1979) Challenge of the Tiger (1980) For Your Height Only In this offbeat action-adventure story, a group of gangsters, under the instructions of their leader Mr. Giant, ambush a scientist and steal the formula for a powerful new weapon, the N-Bomb, which he was about to turn over to the government. It’s imperative that the N-Bomb be recovered as soon as possible, so the world’s greatest secret agent is put on the case — Agent 00 (Weng Weng), who is a skilled martial arts fighter, a cool hand with a gun, and has a way with the ladies. There is one thing about Agent 00 that is a bit unusual, though — he’s three feet tall. For Your Height Only was shot in the Philippines by Eddie Nicart. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Challenge of the Tiger Challenge of the Tiger is one of the more notorious members of the “Bruce-sploitation” subgenre of martial arts movies, a loose label referring to exploitative quickies that cashed in on the untimely death of Bruce Lee. Such films often featured a lookalike martial artist billed with a name and likeness close to that of Bruce Lee and Challenge of the Tiger doesn’t disappoint in this respect — it stars one Bruce Le, who also directs this bizarre outing. Le plays C.I.A. agent Wong Leung, who teams up with fellow agent Richard Cannon (played by European exploitation star Richard Harrison) to keep the forces of evil from getting their hands on a serum that makes its users sterile. The film uses this premise as springboard for plenty of sex and violence, including such memorable highlights as Harrison playing tennis with a bevy of topless women (in slow motion, no less) and Le using his martial arts skills to fight a bull. Between the premise and such scenes, Challenge of the Tiger has earned a legendary reputation amongst fans of exploitation fare. Genre devotees should note that the film was also released on video as Gymkata Killer and received a formal DVD reissue in 2005 by Mondo Macabro. ~ Donald Guarisco, Rovi

Includes:The Dicktator (1974) Deep Jaws (1976) The Dicktator A population-control measure gone wrong leads to an international sexual campaign in this off-the-wall comedy for adults only. With the birth rate spinning out of control, a team of scientists from around the globe create a male birth control pill that will make its users sterile for two years. However, after all the major nations of the world have mandated its use, it’s discovered that there is a flaw in the formula, and now the vast majority of the Earth’s male population are permanently incapable of fathering children. The president of the United States hatches a plan to end the crisis by using intelligence agents to ferret out the few “dicktators” around the world who failed to take the pill and pairing them up with beautiful women. A jailed Russian writer (Ron Carey) is released from prison to spend the night with a gorgeous blonde (Uschi Digard), a shepherd from the Andes asks his assigned partner (Rene Bond) to get him in the mood by imitating a sheep, an Asian potentate (Jess Ramos) squares off with not one but two women (Joanne Stevens and Mara Sonara), and an American exchange student in Africa (Paul Daniels) has an unfortunate encounter with a lovely widow (Yolanda Beckham). The Dicktator was produced and photographed by veteran exploitation kingpin Manuel S. Conde. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Deep Jaws A movie mogul down on his luck hopes that sex really does sell in this irreverent comedy for adults only. Uranus Studios have built their reputation around respectable and critically acclaimed films suitable for family viewing, but in the late ’70s, that’s the last thing anyone wants to see, and the studio is on the verge of going out of business. P.G. Dartmouth (David Kelly), Uranus’ top producer, is desperate for a hit when his wife, Henrietta (Candy Samples), manages to land the studio a contract to make a film about a space mission launched jointly by American and Soviet astronauts, primarily through her extramarital adventures with famous diplomat Hans Pissinger. While the million-dollar budget for the space epic will help keep the wolf from the door for a while, it’s not enough to put Uranus securely in the black until Dartmouth gets an idea — use part of the million bucks to produce a sleazy sex film guaranteed to turn a profit. But can Dartmouth make his underwater porn epic “Deep Jaws” (featuring sexually insatiable mermaids) without tipping off his unknowing financiers — especially while including a role for his nerdy son, Junior (Richard Nathan)? Deep Jaws also features Sandy Carey, George “Buck” Flower, and Gordon Herigstadt. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I Love You, It's Cool [LP]

I Love You, It’s Cool [LP]

Months in advance of the release of I Love You, It’s Cool, Brooklyn trio Bear in Heaven posted streaming audio of the new album in its entirety on their website. The catch was that they slowed the audio significantly, stretching the songs into a continuous 247 hour file, their upbeat synthy pop songs sounding more like the icy ambient drones of Gas or Tim Hecker when played 400,000-percent slower. The stream came off more tongue-in-cheek when the band released a conjoining video mockumentary absurdly positing that they played the entire three-month track live. In one sense, transforming their album into an experimental wash is nothing more than a jokey publicity stunt, but in another, it might suggest the band is taking a look backwards. I Love You, It’s Cool (when played at full speed) is a non-stop showering of hard-edged synths, fuzzy drums, and suave vocals. It’s a crisp pop record made less sterile by a barrage of noisy sounds and tight productions, like the angsty kid brother of Phoenix who would rather make art films than go to the club or maybe a noisier, less controlled foil to the lush melancholia of Beach House. This is a logical progression from their 2009 breakthrough album Beast Rest Forth Mouth, but before that album, Bear in Heaven’s sound jumped around hyperactively from Eno-following rock to murky sample-based experimentalism. Their 2007 album, Red Bloom of the Boom, included long passages of ambient wash, not terrifically unlike the lurching sounds of ILY, IC slowed dramatically. Those moments of genre-hopping and sonic wandering are completely absent here. The production is huge and without flaws, showcasing the band’s big beats and armies of synths in loud colors. “The Reflection of You” is among the catchier songs on the album, bandleader Jon Philpot’s smooth vocals high in the mix and crooning seductively over layers of distorted bass and melodic electro textures. It’s one of the more clear-headed tracks, as the production gets dreamier as the album goes on. By “Sinful Nature,” the band is submerged completely in their swirling sound, dunking the’ 90s soft psychedelic guitar rock influence of Jane’s Addiction or Gish-era Smashing Pumpkins under syncopated walls of sawtooth synthesizer patterns. Tracks like “World of Freakout” and “Space Remains” flirt with the same kind of theatrical indie bombast as contemporaries like M83 or MGMT. I Love You, It’s Cool is a steamrolling album, and with that hyper-vivid flow of stimuli, songs become samey and disengaging after a while. The only breather comes in the downtempo hippy groove of album-closer “Sweetness & Sickness.” While the band has grown since their beginnings, it’s not hard to think they might miss their salad days of less precise Krautrock jamming and infusing the experimental with the pristine. Their breed of futuristic pop is more polished than ever, and loses some of its edge with that increased emulsion. ~ Fred Thomas

Set mainly at night in Tel Aviv, the film revolves around a group of characters who are all loosely connected to the theft of a Christian icon from an international crime organization. Besame Mucho was screened at the 2000 Jerusalem Film Festival. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, Rovi Tricky Life Turf wars between Uruguayan hookers and Brazilian drag queens are just one of the highlights of Tricky Life, a serious but humorous look at women, poverty, and white slavery. When Elisa (Mariana Sant?ngelo), a single mother of two, is kicked out of her mother’s house in the middle of a rainstorm, she goes to her current lover, a married, middle-aged store keeper, for help. He finds her an apartment in Montevideo, where Elisa lives with her best friend Lulu. The two women want nothing more than to open their own hair salon, but can’t find the necessary money to do so. Deciding prostitution is the easiest way to go for financing, they find a respectable brothel to call their workplace. Things go fairly smoothly until Elisa falls for Placido, an older, smooth-talking Spaniard who seduces her with his smooth manner and talk of riches to be had in Barcelona. Abandoning both her children and a good portion of her common sense, Elisa, with Lulu in tow, follows Placido to Barcelona, where she soon discovers that Placido is better at making promises than actually keeping them. Tricky Life was screened at the 2002 Philadelphia Festival of World Cinema. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, Rovi Otilia Rauda Acclaimed Mexican filmmaker Dana Rotberg returns to the screen following an eight year absence with this hypnotic drama about love and revenge.
