Sunset Story - $14.99 Sunset Hall is a managed care facility for the aging with a difference; located in Los Angeles, Sunset Hall is described by its proprietors as “a nonprofit retirement home for free-thinking elders,” and Sunset is home to a group of elderly residents who haven’t allowed their years and their infirmity to quiet their voices or their consciences. Sunset Story is a documentary about the residents of Sunset Hall, in particular two recent arrivals, 95-year-old Lucille Alpert and 81-year-old Irja Lloyd, who become fast friends. While Lloyd has been confined to a wheelchair following a major heart attack, with the help of Alpert, the two frequently participate in political demonstrations (the staff often organizes field trips around activist opportunities) and frequently debate the issues of the day with Lloyd frequently taking a more optimistic viewpoint and Alpert displaying a greater cynicism. Sunset Story received an enthusiastic reception when it premiered at the 2003 Los Angeles Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Sunset Wading $20.99 Personnel includes: John G. Perry (vocals, piano, bass); Beryl Streeter (vocals); Rupert Hine (piano, electric piano, celeste, Moog synthesizer, background vocals); Roger Clover (ARP synthesizer); Morris Pert (vibraphone, marimba, percussion).Personnel: John G. Perry (vocals, bass guitar); Geoffrey Richardson (viola, flute).A minor figure in the mid-’70s U.K. progressive scene (his highest-profile gig was as a bassist in Caravan for a couple of years), John G. Perry only released one album in that decade, 1976′s slight but charming Sunset Wading. The album’s primary gimmick is that throughout the background of its entire 40-minutes runs an ambient field recording of a rural sunrise, beginning with the first rooster crow of the day. (Why an album with an early-morning theme like this has the word “Sunset” in its title is never adequately explained.) Over this pleasantly unobtrusive environmental sound, Perry and a small group of friends featuring producer Rupert Hine, former Robert Fripp associate Michael Giles, and two members of the cult-heroes Italian progressive group Nova play a largely instrumental song cycle highlighted by some delicate musical passages (as on the absolutely lovely “Birds and Small Furry Beasts”) that recall both the more lyrical side of the jazz-influenced Canterbury progressive scene and the poppier Italian progressive rock scene. The seven-minute centerpiece track, “Dawn,” is the standout, slowly building from an almost Brian Eno-like ambient introduction to a resounding climax. Other, more rhythmic tracks recall the mid-’70s work of Gong and the post-Robert Wyatt, fusion-oriented Soft Machine. Unfortunately, as this parade of name-dropping shows, Perry never quite manages to put it together enough to sound like a new and inventive artist, himself. Although Sunset Wading is an enjoyable and often very good listen, there’s not much new here. ~ Stewart Mason |

Sunset – Widescreen $12.99 Director Blake Edwards departed from his customary sex farces to direct an unusual satirical Western comedy-thriller. In 1927, legendary lawman Wyatt Earp (James Garner) comes to Hollywood to serve as an advisor to a film studio making a movie about Earp’s life. He meets silent screen cowboy star Tom Mix (Bruce Willis). The two stumble upon a murder that has apparently occurred on the set but is linked to a renowned bordello. The aging cowboy and the young actor set off on a series of time-warp misadventures to try to solve the mystery. Along the way, they encounter the shady Alfie Alperin (Malcom McDowell) and the intriguing Cheryl King (Mariel Hemingway). ~ Michael Betzold, Rovi |

Riding the Sunset Trail – B&W $5.99 Before changing his name to Richard Powers, cowboy hero Tom Keene spent the waning days of his stardom at Monogram, churning out westerns like Riding the Sunset Trail. When ingenue Betty Dawson (Betty Miles) and her kid sister Sugar (Sugar Dawn) are cheated out of their cattle ranch, Tom Sterling (Keene) and his sidekick Mendoza (Frank Yaconelli) vow to get the ranch back for the girls. This requires Sterling to cross six-guns with Pecos Dean (Gene Alcase), a former friend who’d turned bad. The climax is a shootout between our heroes and the minions of chief heavy Jay Lynch (Kenne Duncan). Formerly a bit too overenthusiastic in his screen appearances, Tom Keene turns in a restrained, well-modulated peformance in Riding the Sunset Trail. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Sunset/Sunrise [LP] $12.98 Kimberly Morrison and Jesse Lortz, better known as the Dutchess & the Duke, have opened up their sound just a bit on their second album, Sunset/Sunrise, and though the result still sounds spare and open, given the stark simplicity of their 2008 debut this music represents a subtle but decisive step forward. Greg Ashley of the Gris Gris produced and recorded Sunset/Sunrise, as well as contributing additional guitar and keyboards, and while he doesn’t intrude too severely on the duo’s low-key punk-folk stylings, the additional layers of organ, percussion, and strings on several tracks not only bring welcome new flavors to the mix, but the richer aural landscape suits the duo’s simple but sturdy harmonies, which are noticeably more impressive here. (Lortz takes most of the lead vocals, but Morrison certainly makes the most of her spots and sounds more confident and controlled on these sessions.) Lortz wrote the ten songs on Sunset/Sunrise, and it’s obvious that he still loves the Between the Buttons-era Rolling Stones, but this set sounds less clearly derivative as Lortz and Morrison forge a stronger identity of their own with this material, and the songs reveal a greater melodic strength and an expanded palette of emotional shadings. On their first album, the Dutchess & the Duke were seemingly content to document their songs and their harmonies in a straightforward fashion, but Sunset/Sunrise shows that with a bit of judiciously placed accompaniment and a more ambitious use of the studio, the duo can add depth and gravity to music that was fine stuff to begin with. ~ Mark Deming |

The Sunset Tree [LP] $15.98 John Darnielle is, for all intents and purposes, the voice and vision of the Mountain Goats, though he is joined here by a handful of musicians (including John Vanderslice and Erik Friedlander) who lend texture and color to his strummed acoustic-guitar playing and plaintive singing. THE SUNSET TREE is one of Darnielle’s most strikingly honest and emotionally affecting releases. Gone are the lo-fi antics and purposeful tape hiss of early Mountain Goats outings (Darnielle released his first several albums on cassette only); here the sound is stark and clear, highlighting the vulnerable, sometimes-awkward quality of Darnielle’s voice and his literate, startlingly confessional lyrics. An inscription in the album art dedicates the record to young people who have been abused. The topic is addressed on songs like “Lion’s Teeth,” “This Year,” and “Dance Music,” where Darnielle unfolds emotionally incisive narratives about his own childhood with retrospective insight and a writer’s eye for detail. Intriguing arrangements–like the string-quartet backing on “Dilaudid”–keep the sound varied, but Darnielle’s guitar and voice are front and center throughout, leaving THE SUNSET TREE firmly within the Mountain Goats’ stylistic ken. The unflinching honesty here marks the album as one of Darnielle’s most noteworthy achievements. |

Sunrise/Sunset – Subtitle $19.99 Filmmaker Vitaly Mansky allows viewers to see a personal side of one of the world’s most celebrated spiritual and political leaders in this documentary. Mansky and a small camera crew were given unrestricted access to an ordinary day in the life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama XIV, and Sunrise/Sunset follows him from 3 a.m., when he wakes up, to nightfall, when he goes to sleep. During his waking hours, the cameras follow the Dalai Lama as he exercises, meditates, prays, meets with visitors, speaks to members of the press and teaches his students. The Buddhist leader also takes time to answer some questions from Mansky, and he speaks at length about his spiritual beliefs and how he feels the individual can impact the world around him. The film also features an extended sequence in which Mansky traces the route from Russia to India he and his crew traveled in order to make the film. Sunrise/Sunset was an official selection at the 2009 Rotterdam International Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Sunset Carson Rides Again – B&W $5.99 Filmed in 16 mm Kodachrome and produced by Gower Gulch company Yucca Pictures Corp., this no-budget Western featured former Republic star Sunset Carson as a rancher who comes across a wayward youngster, the Kansas Kid (Al Terry), about to drink from a poisoned spring. Unbeknownst to Sunset, the Kid is actually Bob Ward (misspelled “Wade” in the film’s credits!), and he is carrying a letter implicating Carson in the death of his father. While attempting to discover the truth, Bob Ward proves himself a born prize-fighter, besting Sunset’s crooked partner, Sam Webster (Bob Cason), in the ring. As it turns out, the Kid is in possession of yet another, unopened, letter that exonerates Sunset in the father’s death, shifting instead the blame to Webster and his henchman, Murdock (Stephen Keyes). Produced and directed by Oliver Drake, Sunset Carson Rides Again was one of four Yucca Westerns Carson did at the tail end of his career. As film historian Don Miller so succinctly put it, “Yucca indeed!” ~ Hans J. Wollstein, Rovi |
