The Health Care Times

Why does the president spend almost all of his time with health care when much bigger problems are out there?

Health care was not perfect but I would think jobs and the 53 trillion dollar dept are countries in are just a couple out of many bigger issues to deal with

Health care is 1/6 of the economy. It affects jobs and the deficit. It practically touches all of our lives in one way or another. For example, the people that are uninsured get free medical help that taxpayers pay for. In addition, the uninsured cause our premiums to go up. With higher premiums, employers lay off people because of higher costs of health insurance that impact the bottom line. Also, the spiraling costs of health care is adding to our deficits because of medicare and the prescription drug program Bush didn’t fund. So you can see how the issue has a creeping effect on all our lives.

By curing the problem correctly a big burden will be lifted from the taxpayers, employers, and the fiscal health of this country. This issue overlaps and is part of all the other issues except the wars. So, the President has a good reason to make health care a priority.

Damaged Care - $24.99 Damaged Care is fact-based drama about the managed care industry. It originally aired on Showtime. Laura Dern co-produced and stars in the film as Dr. Linda Peeno, who gives up her career after earning a medical degree, so that she can take care of her family. Her husband, Doug (James LeGros), is a successful OB/GYN. In 1987, when their children (from previous marriages) have gotten a little older, Linda decides to return to work, and gets a job as a medical reviewer at Humana Health Care. Patient claims that aren’t approved by the UR (utilization review) nurses are forwarded to the doctors on the medical review team, who, Linda learns, are expected to rubber-stamp the UR nurses’ decisions. Every decision Linda makes to cover a patient’s care is questioned, sometimes angrily. The head of the UR department, Cheryl Griffith (Regina King) befriends Linda, and shares her unhappiness with the system. Linda has a crisis of conscience when she gets a call about an emergency heart transplant that needs immediate approval. Pressured by the company, she finds an out in the employer’s healthcare booklet, and denies the claim. The patient dies. Eventually, Linda quits Humana (angering Doug), and Cheryl gets her a job at a smaller, non-profit company, Brothers Managed Care. The system is pretty much the same, though, and Linda comes into conflict with the cost-conscious head of the UR nurses, Gemma Coombs (Michelle Clunie). When a nurse (Suki Kaiser) is stricken with a series of crippling strokes, Linda takes a stand against the company to get her the treatment she needs. Eventually, Dr. Linda Peeno gets out of the system, and becomes an outspoken critic of the abuses of the health care industry. Times $26.99 Following up on his 2008 hit Bridge, actor-singer Hiroshi Tamaki returned in 2009 with Times, an attempt to vary his sound a bit while still holding onto the basic form of his simplistic but popular vocal form. The album opens with a relatively flat delivery on Tamaki’s part, but builds to “Pallet,” a pop ballad with some speed and a sweeping, flowing format that hearkens strongly to groups like Sukima Switch. There are serious bouts with cheesiness to be sure — a misplaced chorus in “Last Song,” a mediocre bit of Brazilian in “Kimi to Sora,” a heavy dependence on sweeping string arrangements and easy listening accents that could well have been avoided. In his best parts, Tamaki can invoke the spirit of other hitmakers — touches of what SMAP has done with the jazzy end of things, touches of what singers like Noriyuki Makihara have done with the borderline between base pop and deeper songwriting talents. Only periodically, though, does the listener really get something original and intimate from Tamaki. Those moments shine brightly, but they’re few and far between. ~ Adam Greenberg

This time around, Chase is a divorced novelist who is abducted by crooks and set up as the fall guy in a bank robbery. Arrested, Chase manages to escape and to make his way to the home of ex-wife Goldie Hawn, now a highly respected liberal defense attorney. Chase’s unexpected arrival coincides with an important dinner party on behalf of Goldie’s current husband, district attorney Charles Grodin. At first making every effort to give Chase the boot, Hawn, ever the champion of the underdog finally decides to help him out of his dilemma–much to the discomfort of her politically ambitious husband. Wisely, Grodin does not play his character as an unpleasant stuffed shirt; he is as likeable as Chase and Hawn, giving the farcical plot convolutions a tinge of reality. We care about the people involved, thus the laughs spring as much from characterization as they do from the situation.
