Radio Phnom Penh $14.99 This is simply one of Sublime Frequencies’ best, strangest and most entertaining psycho-touristic sets. The Cambodian pop/rock gems presented here have been selected and assembled by Alan Bishop, who lifted them from the AM and FM airwaves of Phnom Penh. The AM cuts are genuine recordings from the ’60s and ’70s, an era during which Cambodians made a vital effort to adapt Western music to their culture. The FM cuts feature similar recordings that have been remixed (with the addition of drums and other instruments) in an attempt to adapt them to the taste of the youth du jour. Bishop concludes his liner notes by stating that “this is re-mix radio, much of it re-mixed music, created by a re-mixed culture,” referring to Cambodia’s history as a French colony with strong American and Chinese influences. The result is a rollercoaster of Eastern-sounding psychedelic pop, ska, rockabilly, and the likes, peppered with bits of radio chatter in Cambodian, English and French (including news and broadcasts from the Cambodian international shortwave radio service) and lots of cheesy keyboard work. A thumping dance beat kicks off the set, but dance music makes very few apparitions. What reigns throughout the set is a blend of British Invasion-type pop, ska/reggae, and Santana-like Latin rock. Highlights include the first tune heard in the track titled “Street Guns and Studio Drums” (itself a collage of bits and piece that must be heard to be believed), the most disturbing cover ever recorded of the Beatles’ “Hard Day’s Night,” and the most improbable ad for condoms. All this is presented in Sublime Frequencies’ typically kaleidoscopic fashion, painting a vividly colorful, slightly disorienting picture of Cambodian culture, which is arguably closer to the real thing (diverse and disorganized as any other culture) than the cataloged presentations of ethnomusicologists. Kids in America - $9.99 Teenagers stand up for their rights and take on the woman who wants to scuttle their freedoms in this comedy drama inspired by a true story. Principal Weller (Julie Bowen) is the ambitious but hard-headed leader of Booker High School. Weller plans to run for superintendent of her school district, and believes if she wants to win she needs to project the image of a no-nonsense leader, and with that in mind she begins cracking down on what she sees as discipline problems at Booker High. However, in many cases what she sees as kids out of control are seen by others as kids expressing themselves, including a girl who wants to distribute condoms to recognize National Safe Sex Day, and two boys who are caught kissing in the hallway between classes. Mr. Drucker (Malik Yoba) is a teacher at Booker who tries to champion the students’ rights of free expression, but his conflicts with Principal Weller end up costing him his job when he’s fired for questioning her authority. Holden Donovan (Gregory Smith) is a student at Booker who is alarmed that the students have lost one of their few allies, and decides to do something about it — along with his classmates, he sets out to establish and defend the right of free expression for high-school students, and launches a campaign against Weller’s bid to become superintendent. Kids in America also stars Stephanie Sherrin, Nicole Richie, Adam Arkin, George Wendt, and Elizabeth Perkins. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Teknolust - $14.99 In this offbeat sci-fi-drama, Rosetta Stone (Tilda Swinton) is a scientist specializing in biogenetics who has made a major breakthrough in artificial biological engineering. Rosetta has created a type of Self-Replicating Automaton, which looks like a human being, but is in fact part machine and part living organism. In order to survive and reproduce, Rosetta discovers her SRAs need certain human genetic compounds that are found only in male semen. Hoping to kill two birds with one stone, Rosetta programs one of her SRAs, Ruby (also played by Swinton) to seduce men Rosetta has found through a website offering paid “fantasy dates,” which will provide both needed materials and ready cash. Ruby brings back used condoms, and shares the contents with her fellow SRAs Marine and Olive (both also played by Swinton). However, after their assignations with Ruby, the men find themselves with a strange illness that leaves them with skin outbreaks and the inability to perform sexually. Two health investigators (James Urbaniak and Karen Black) begin interviewing the men infected, which sends them on a trail leading back to Rosetta and her research lab. Meanwhile, the more Ruby comes in contact with humans, the more she finds herself falling under the sway of human emotions, and she finds herself falling in love with Sandy (Jeremy Davies), a shy man working at a photocopying center. As a Navy commandant (Will Wright) has a casual sit down with the ship’s Executive Officer (Myron McCormick), the details emerge; after a long tour, the men are anxiously awaiting a period of leave and are excitedly discussing the prospect of linking up with women in the port city. The ship’s doctor (Archie Twitchell) is genuinely concerned by reports linking the ship’s destination with rampant strains of venereal disease and by the na?vet? of the crew – one sailor, Windy (unidentified actor), is passing out mysterious pills said to cure VD. Doc does everything in his power to try to inform the men, and even motivates the Executive Officer to give a lengthy speech on the perils of VD, the use of condoms and to encourage abstinence, which is heeded by few. During leave, several of the men go out in search of loose women; one of them, Chicken (Keefe Brasselle), gets cold feet but manages to find a “nice girl” instead, Margaret (unidentified actress). Back out on the open ocean, the piper is paid, as various men begin to turn up with cases of VD, the ravages of which are unflinchingly shown before the camera. Chicken is the one sailor courageous enough to name the source of his ailment, and back in the port city Margaret is informed, saving her life. On the ocean, however, the men of the DE 733 are forced to contend with their dangerous mission and to rise with whatever resources they have to fulfill their duty; with illness affecting so many crew members, it proves a daunting task indeed. ~ David Lewis, Rovi
