Acting on a hunch, Popeye and Buddy start tailing Sal Boca (Tony Lo Bianco) and his wife, Angie (Arlene Faber), who live pretty high for a couple whose corner store brings in about 7,000 dollars a year. It turns out Popeye’s suspicions are right — Sal and Angie are the New York agents for Charnier, who will be smuggling 32 million dollars’ worth of heroin into the city in a car shipped over from France. The French Connection broke plenty of new ground for screen thrillers; Popeye Doyle was a highly unusual “hero,” an often violent, racist, and mean-spirited cop whose dedication to his job fell just short of dangerous obsession. The film’s high point, a high-speed car chase with Popeye tailing an elevated train, was one of the most viscerally exciting screen moments of its day and set the stage for dozens of action sequences to follow. And the film’s grimy realism (and downbeat ending) was a big change from the buff-and-shine gloss and good-guys-always-win heroics of most police dramas that preceded it. The French Connection was inspired by a true story, and Eddie Egan and Sonny Grosso, Popeye and Buddy’s real life counterparts, both have small roles in the film. Tom Hanks made his directorial debut in this bright comedy set in the mid-1960′s about a rock group and their brief fling with fame. Guy Patterson (Tom Everett Scott) works as a salesman at his father’s appliance store and plays the drums in his spare time, fancying himself a jazz musician. One day, a buddy of Guy’s tells him a local rock band, The One-Ders (it’s pronounced “wonders”), are in need of a drummer — they have Battle of the Bands coming up and their usual timekeeper has broken his arm. Guy agrees to sit in, but when it’s time to play their best original, a love ballad called “That Thing You Do,” Guy lays in a sharp, driving beat that turns the tune into an uptempo pop-rocker. Lead singer Jimmy (Johnathon Schaech) isn’t happy at first, but guitarist Lenny (Steve Zahn) and the nameless Bass Player (Ethan Embry) think the song sounds better that way — and they notice the girls like it just fine. The boss of her father’s gang is now Nogi (Jimpachi Nezu), who is as merciless as he is slick. Ikko is certain that he ordered the hit and she is equally certain that she wants him dead. Easier said than done; his allies are powerful and numerous — including Ikko’s own sister-in-law (Miyuki Ono) who has become Nogi’s mistress. Even Mayu, the woman who saved Ikko, is now strung out on drugs, existing solely as Nogi’s sex slave. Frustrated and furious, Ikko decides to blast her way into the gangster’s home and kill him. However, Yamabe does not recognize her and shoots. He misses and hits a passerby, the husband of pregnant Suzu, who dies in his wife’s arms. Mayo gets another urgent order to kill Yakazi, but her love for Yamabe is in the way. Meanwhile Yamabe is following Mayo and Suzu is following Yamabe to avenge her husband. The drama of the three characters is the film’s focus, but the action scenes, as in the more action-oriented Volume 1, are as visually stunning as ever. From Dusk Till Dawn Triple Pack [3 Discs] – 3 Pack $17.99 Includes:From Dusk Till Dawn (1996), MPAA Rating: R From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money (1998), MPAA Rating: R From Dusk Till Dawn 3: The Hangman’s Daughter (1999), MPAA Rating: R From Dusk Till Dawn In this action-horror flick from director Robert Rodriguez and screenwriter Quentin Tarantino, Tarantino stars with George Clooney as a pair of bad-to-the-bone brothers named Seth and Richie Gecko. After a string of robberies that left a river of blood in the Geckos’ wake, the sadistic siblings head to Mexico to live the good life. To get over the border, they kidnap Jacob Fuller, a widowed preacher played by Harvey Keitel, and his two children, Kate (Juliette Lewis) and Scott (Ernest Liu). Once south of the border, the quintet park their RV at a rough-and-tumble trucker bar called The Titty Twister, where Seth and Richie are supposed to meet a local thug. After a couple of drinks, they realize that they’re not in a typical bar, as the entire place begins to teem with vicious, blood-sucking vampires. With the odds stacked greatly against them, the Fullers and Geckos team together in hopes of defeating the creatures of the night. Makeup artist Tom Savini and blaxploitation star Fred Williamson appear as allies against the vampires, and Cheech Marin fills three different roles. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money This sequel attempts to ape the inventive blend of horror, comedy, and crime melodrama of its predecessor, with some creative direction by actor Sam Spiegel, a prot?g? of Sam Raimi. Buck (Robert Patrick) is a former bank robber who’s being watched closely by Sheriff Lawson (Bo Hopkins). Lawson’s suspicions are well-founded, because Buck is indeed planning a multimillion-dollar bank heist in Mexico, to be aided by prison escapee Luther (Duane Whitaker), rodeo star C.W. (Muse Watson), dog trainer Jesus (Raymond Cruz) and security guard Ray Bob (Brett Harrelson). While on his way to meet up with the gang, Luther encounters bat-related car trouble near the Titty Twister, a dive bar featured in the first film. Offered a lift by Razor Eddie (Danny Trejo), Luther ends up with a pair of fangs in his neck. When he finally meets up with his cronies, Luther turns Jesus into a fellow vampire, unbeknownst to the rest of the gang, who proceed with their caper plans accompanied by two cohorts now more interested in blood than cash. Cisco Kid: Western Triple Feature, Vol. 1 – B&W Dolby $8.99 Includes:The Gay Cavalier (1946) Beauty and the Bandit (1946) South of Monterey (1947) The Gay Cavalier There’d already been a “Cisco Kid” B-picture titled The Gay Caballero, so this Monogram “Cisco” entry was released as The Gay Cavalier. No matter: it means the same thing, and the film is the mixture as before. Gilbert Roland stars as Cisco, while Martin Garralaga, usually cast as Pancho, is here seen as a wealthy ranch owner. With his usually roguish aplomb, Cisco saves Garralaga from a gang of thieves, engaging chief villain Tris Coffin in an exciting bit of climactic swordplay. Gay Cavalier represented Gilbert Roland’s first “Cisco Kid” endeavor; he would appear in five more before being replaced by Duncan Renaldo in 1947. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Beauty and the Bandit Gilbert Roland dominates the action in a colorful performance as the bandit hero the Cisco Kid, this time up against a surprisingly vicious plot by a local doctor to steal land from the local peasants and small ranchers by poisoning them to drive them off, and then reselling the property to absentee European landlords. He finds an unexpected ally in Jeanne DuBois (Ramsay Ames), who starts out as part of the plot but is turned around by Roland’s charm and charisma after a few fireworks. The direction is uneven, with William Nigh not quite able to make the flatter parts of the script as entertaining or smooth as they ought to be. Evidently, the producers knew they were in trouble with this downbeat script and took steps to rescue the picture. Seeing the sparks fly in the scenes in the first third of the picture, in which Ames is disguised as a man (which evokes echoes — albeit very distant — of Shakespeare’s As You Like It) and verbally jousts with Roland, more material was written on the spot for the two of them, depicting a competition that becomes much more heated when her gender is revealed. By her own account, Nigh and Ames were friends, and she was a good sport on this shoot whatever they had her doing, and it’s a pity they didn’t go further with the rivalry between Roland’s and Ames’ characters, who might’ve been the Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones of their era. Roland also wrote some of his own dialogue and poetry for this effort, which seems very hackneyed today, but played just fine for audiences in 1946. (Note: In early TV prints of Beauty And The Bandit, all references to the Cisco Kid and O. Henry in the credits were blacked out, and mentions of the Cisco Kid and “Cisco” in the dialogue awkwardly dubbed over as “Chico” — one suspects this was because the exclusive TV rights to the Cisco Kid had been sold to another producer for the TV series starring Duncan Renaldo and Leo Carrillo). ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi South of Monterey An average “Cisco Kid” Western-adventure, South of Monterey features ace villain Harry Woods as Bennett, a nasty tax collector foreclosing on the poor to benefit himself. Spores rain forth, unseen, from outer space, and soon strange flowers begin popping up all over the city. After bringing one of these hybrid specimens home with her one night, biologist Elizabeth Driscoll (Brooke Adams) notices that her live-in boyfriend, Geoffrey (Art Hindle), doesn’t seem like himself; he’s cold and distant and somehow just not quite there. When she turns to her friend Matthew Bennell (Donald Sutherland), a colleague at the Department of Public Health, he convinces her to see his friend Dr. Kibner (Leonard Nimoy), a pop psychologist who argues that the problem is all in Elizabeth’s head. Soon, though, Matthew and Elizabeth begin to notice that people all over the city are changing subtly and inexplicably. When their friend Jack Bellicec (Jeff Goldblum) and his wife Nancy (Veronica Cartwright) find a lifeless, half-formed doppelganger covered with plant fibers in the mud baths they own and operate, the group of friends finally begins to understand that a sinister transformation is sweeping their city. Kevin McCarthy and Don Siegel, respectively the star and director of the original film, have small roles in the new version, as does an unbilled Robert Duvall. ~ Brian J. Dillard, Rovi Alien “In space, no one can hear you scream.” A close encounter of the third kind becomes a Jaws-style nightmare when an alien invades a spacecraft in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror classic. On the way home from a mission for the Company, the Nostromo’s crew is woken up from hibernation by the ship’s Mother computer to answer a distress signal from a nearby planet. Capt. Dallas’s (Tom Skerritt) rescue team discovers a bizarre pod field, but things get even stranger when a face-hugging creature bursts out of a pod and attaches itself to Kane (John Hurt). Over the objections of Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), science officer Ash (Ian Holm) lets Kane back on the ship. The acid-blooded incubus detaches itself from an apparently recovered Kane, but an alien erupts from Kane’s stomach and escapes.
