Damaged Care -

Damaged Care is fact-based drama about the managed care industry. It originally aired on Showtime. Laura Dern co-produced and stars in the film as Dr. Linda Peeno, who gives up her career after earning a medical degree, so that she can take care of her family. Her husband, Doug (James LeGros), is a successful OB/GYN. In 1987, when their children (from previous marriages) have gotten a little older, Linda decides to return to work, and gets a job as a medical reviewer at Humana Health Care. Patient claims that aren’t approved by the UR (utilization review) nurses are forwarded to the doctors on the medical review team, who, Linda learns, are expected to rubber-stamp the UR nurses’ decisions. Every decision Linda makes to cover a patient’s care is questioned, sometimes angrily. The head of the UR department, Cheryl Griffith (Regina King) befriends Linda, and shares her unhappiness with the system. Linda has a crisis of conscience when she gets a call about an emergency heart transplant that needs immediate approval. Pressured by the company, she finds an out in the employer’s healthcare booklet, and denies the claim. The patient dies. Eventually, Linda quits Humana (angering Doug), and Cheryl gets her a job at a smaller, non-profit company, Brothers Managed Care. The system is pretty much the same, though, and Linda comes into conflict with the cost-conscious head of the UR nurses, Gemma Coombs (Michelle Clunie). When a nurse (Suki Kaiser) is stricken with a series of crippling strokes, Linda takes a stand against the company to get her the treatment she needs. Eventually, Dr. Linda Peeno gets out of the system, and becomes an outspoken critic of the abuses of the health care industry. Dern’s mother, Diane Ladd, and Adam Arkin also appear in the film. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi

As the operation gets underway, the resourceful band of thieves burrows its way into a safe-deposit vault at the Lloyds Bank in Marylebone, quickly hitting a literal treasure trove of cash and priceless gems. Full title: She Thinks I Still Care: The Complete United Artists Recordings, 1962-1964 [Bear Family.Country music doesn't get any more essential than this. The five-disc box set SHE THINKS I STILL CARE is undoubtedly the most awe-inspiring George Jones collection to date. Jones was at his peak during his 1962-'64 stint on the UA label, and some of his most unforgettable recordings hail from this era. You get much more on this set than mere timeless, undeniable gems such as "The Race is On," "She Thinks I Still Care," and "Let's Invite Them Over," though. From heartbroken Hank Williams tributes like "Take These Chains From My Heart" to the spiritual intensity of "Kneel at the Feet of Jesus" and a generous helping of Jones's legendary duets with Melba Montgomery (easily on a par with his Tammy Wynette collaborations), this set gives us a full picture of the man's artistry. And with five discs worth of tracks, you couldn't ask for more comprehensive coverage of this era. You can get the aforementioned hits on a million best-of packages, it's the rest of the story that makes SHE THINKS I STILL CARE such an outstanding musical document.

The collapse of Lehman Brothers in September 2008 triggered fears that a Depression-like economic free fall was fast developing. To head it off, then-Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson helped arrange the Bank of America-Merrill Lynch merger and, a month later, pressured the nation's largest banks to take $125 billion of taxpayers' money. Featuring interviews with Bank of America CEO Kenneth Lewis and former Merrill Lynch CEO John Thain, Frontline: Breaking the Bank examines those goings-on through the prism of Bank of American and also explores the consequences of the infusion of public capital into the private sphere. ~ Jeff Gemmill, Rovi

Unfortunately, they are not the only bandits planning to rob the bank. Their rivals in robbery include a Mexican bandido and his dullard son. A gunman and his assistant also want to attempt a heist. To make things even more confusing, a Texas Ranger and his six Chinese-American G-men pose as laundrymen to investigate a crooked mayor. They all converge on Friendly at the same time and chaos ensues when they meet. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi The Great Bank Hoax Shortly before the bank examiner is due to arrive, higher-ups at a small-town bank discover that a beloved long-term employee has embezzled $100,000. The embezzler (Paul Sand), says he did it just to point out a flaw in the bank's bookkeeping practices. Bank officers Jack and Emanuel (Burgess Meredith and Richard Basehart) cook up a scheme to cover up the theft, which, incidentally, will net them an additional hundred grand. The supposedly secret embezzlement and bank examiner visit becomes known throughout the tight-knit community. Some pillars of the community see it as an opportunity for gain and others want to help save reputations, but everyone gets involved. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Bank Alarm was one of four low-budget but high-entertainment crime melodramas starring Conrad Nagel and Eleanor Hunt as Federal agents Alan O'Connor and Bobbie Reynolds. On this occasion, the two G-people are on the trail of a gang of desperate bank robbers. Making their job slightly easier is the fact that the crooks are leaving behind a trail of counterfeit money. Unfortunately, they're also leaving a trail of corpses, meaning that Alan and Bobbie had better get a move on before someone else gets bumped off. Bank Alarm was the last of the Nagel-Hunt crime series, all of which were produced by the financially canny George A. Hirliman. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

It’s no secret that the subject of health care is a hot-button issue in the United States, but would it be possible to improve our health care system by looking to other countries for inspiration? This is the question asked by T.R. Reid, a veteran foreign correspondent for The Washington Post and a concerned American who has taken it upon himself to explore out the most effective health care systems from capitalist democracies across the world. In this documentary, Reid travels to the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Taiwan, and Switzerland in order to contrast and compare their health care systems what that of the United States’. The result is an eye-opening look at the many ways in which a country can care for its citizens. In Germany, the country often credited with creating the concept of a universal health care system, the rich help to pay for the poor and the healthy contribute to cover the ill. But while this system may seem ideal to some, it does get a bit more complicated: Medical providers must negotiate standard coverage process with the government on an annual basis, and doctors in Germany only earn between half and two-thirds the incomes of their U.S. counterparts. Japan boasts the world’s best health care statistics, but citizens are ordered by law to purchase health insurance and insurers aren’t allowed to make a profit. As Reid makes his way around the world, he begins to wonder if the U.S. couldn’t take a tip from Taiwan – a country that looked offshore for inspiration on creating a more effective national healthcare system. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Alice in Chains: Music Bank - The Videos -

Alice in Chains: Music Bank – The Videos -

$9.99

Though Alice in Chains has been on hold since the latter part of the ’90s due to drug relapses and band arguments, these grunge founders have managed to stay on people’s minds. Since riding in on the wave that Kurt Cobain and Nirvana made with the introduction of grunge, Alice in Chains has amassed a following that is at times baffling. Having only produced three full length albums, it hardly seems necessary for the band to have a boxed set released, but apparently the public wanted something new from Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell. Not having any new material to offer, it seems the folks at Columbia Music and Video put their heads together and decided to let Alice in Chains ride another wave, the box set wave. Video Bank is meant to accompany the audio release of Music Bank. While Music Bank is a compilation of most of the songs already released by Alice in Chains in alternate mixes and demo versions, Video Bank is a collection of all the band’s videos and a short ten minute compilation of home video shot by the band. Though many people may not be impressed with a three CD set of songs they already own, they just may be impressed by the videos contained on Video Bank. This compilation includes the videos for Man in a Box, Heaven Beside You, and Them Bones, all of which saw heavy rotation on MTV. It also includes hidden gems like two separate video versions of The Rooster and We Die Young, as well as lesser seen videos for hits such as Angry Chair and Down in a Hole. If you are an Alice in Chains fan and are looking for something fresh from the band, then Video Bank is a worthy investment. ~ Ed Atkinson, Rovi

L.T.D. stands for Long Tall Dexter.Personnel includes: Dexter Gordon (tenor saxophone); Bobby Timmons (piano); Victor Gaskin (bass); Percy Brice (drums)Recorded live at the Famous Ballroom, Baltimore, Maryland on May 4, 1969 as presented by the Left Bank Jazz Society. Includes liner notes by Larry Hollis. What a gem this previously unearthed spice box is. Who would have thought that in 1969, with a New York pick-up band — comprised of Bobby Timmons on piano, Victor Gaskin on bass, and Percy Brice on drums — long, tall Dexter Gordon could take a classic like “Broadway,” which he recorded a near-definitive version of in 1963 on Our Man in Paris, and completely leave it in the dust six long years later? And this is the opening track. While it’s not a speeding bullet train, “Broadway” has a fine head of engine steam in its mid-tempo to up-tempo range of post-bop stomp on a Tin Pan Alley standard. While the rhythm section comes loping out of the gate, Gordon takes the solo into a series of intervallic and scalular chord changes that eliminate all but the tune’s skeleton. He takes the melody around the block twice and then moves through no less than 11 choruses, almost all in double-time. Timmons, whose right hand was always one of the wonders of the world, does not disappoint here, either. He comps himself while trilling his way into the intricacies of two-handed counterpoint. The blues are always present but he’s not afraid of a little dissonance either, as he takes the solo right to the top of the instrument’s register and keeps it there. Gordon’s “Boston Bernie” was erected from the chords of “All the Things You Are,” though its tempo is a bit quicker and the chordal structure for Timmons is both dense and luminous. Gordon’s own solo over seven or eight choruses comes out of John Coltrane’s blues period, where he had discovered Coleman Hawkins — whom Gordon had as an early influence, so its flighty whisking glide is convoluted yet so beautifully revealing of his lyricism there is no awkwardness. There is a bit of honking and squeaking at the end of his solo, but it was the ’60s after all. The remaining two tunes — “In a Sentimental Mood,” which is a relatively short ballad (in this set anyway) at just under nine minutes, is all warm, silver-tongued Gordon, with Timmons providing some of the most lush scales and chords of his career through the intervals. Finally, with “Blues Up and Down,” there’s the full, rounded picture of Gordon in 1969, a musician at the absolute peak of his abilities. His blowing and phrasing turned the form inside out and on its head out of reverence not as a need to reinvent it. His scalular challenges to Timmons are intimidating as hell and the pianist compensates by cutting through and extending chord sequences without changing the phraseology of the tune. Gordon just blows his ass off, digging deep into the feeling of those 12 bars, reaching for anything at all he hasn’t unearthed before, and when he finds it, he screa

Nick Stahl, Erika Christensen, and Gavin Rossdale star in a high-stakes caper film in which the only thing for certain is that nothing is as it seems. Fed up with the manner in which super-sized corporations continually stack the deck against the common man, Jason “Jinx” Taylor (Stahl) reaches his wit’s end after attempting to withdraw his last 20 dollars from the bank and getting refused due to the fact that the transaction fee will overdraw him. Locked in a tightly sealed bank vault with pretty Jessica (Christensen), Jinx struggles to find a way out as armed robber Simon (Rossdale) and his men search for a means of getting in. As Officer De Gespe (Terry Crews) and his men surround the bank, it begins to appear that the situation is slightly more complicated than the cops anticipated. When Simon fails to intimidate Jinx into opening the vault, loyalties are tested and the situation quickly turns volatile. Soon it’s revealed that the true mastermind of the operation is a man whom no one had expected, and that in order to collect the funds that have been skimmed from bank fees over the course of many years, he will have to convince Jinx and Jessica to issue a secret PIN number. Now, in order to escape with both the cash and their lives, Jinx will have to convince cops and robbers alike that he and Jessica are merely hostages who need to be released before things get truly out of hand. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The Great St. Louis Bank Robbery – B&W Dolby

$3.99

Based on an actual bank heist (and even using the St. Louis policemen who took part in thwarting the original robbery), this fairly ho-hum caper film stars Steve McQueen as the driver of the getaway car for the four bank robbers. The four men go over their plan several times, including dry runs to cover every possible contingent. These preparations take up most of the film, so that by the time the thieves are ready to do it, the audience has been ready forever. The actual scenario when the thieves walk into the bank is fast-paced, and as might be expected, even the best-laid plans cannot foresee everything. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
