While You Were Sleeping – Widescreen

This latter-day romantic screwball comedy stars Sandra Bullock as a love-starved subway toll booth operator, Lucy. Lucy pines for regular customer Peter Callaghan (Peter Gallagher), but the self-absorbed attorney pays her no heed. One day, Peter is beaten by a gang of thugs and tossed onto the tracks. Lucy rescues him from death. While he is comatose in the hospital, a comment she makes at his bedside is misinterpreted, and she then allows his family members, who haven’t seen Peter in awhile, to believe that she is his fianc?e. Peter’s parents, Ox (Peter Boyle) and Midge (Micole Mercurio), take a liking to Lucy. But Lucy takes a liking to Peter’s brother Jack (Bill Pullman), though Jack is suspicious about her claim to be Peter’s intended. ~ Michael Betzold, Rovi

The Nearness of You

The Nearness of You

$14.99

Personnel: Bennie Wallace (tenor saxophone); Kenny Barron (piano); Eddie Gomez (bass).Bennie Wallace has long been known for his sudden interval leaps and somewhat angular approach, and this studio date is no exception, though it focuses exclusively on standards written between the 1930s and 1950s. The tenor saxophonist chose two top-caliber musical partners, pianist Kenny Barron and bassist Eddie Gomez, to join him on his excursions, all of which are delightful. Barron’s blues-drenched piano sets the table for Wallace’s mournful sax in “Willow Weep for Me,” while Gomez provides a series of intriguing responses to the leader in an anything but hackneyed treatment of “Cocktails for Two.” Hoagy Carmichael’s warm ballad “The Nearness of You” is clearly in the hands of three masters as it is recast with a distinctively modern touch. This is easily a high point in Bennie Wallace’s long career. ~ Ken Dryden

A guy who’s having jitters about his relationship ends up polarizing nearly everyone he knows in this comedy. Robert thinks his life is just the way he wants it until his girlfriend announces one day that she’s going to be having his baby. While she wants to get married, Robert isn’t sure he wants to make that commitment. When he shares his predicament with his buddies, most of them tell him to stand his ground and are willing to back up their opinions; however, her friends are just as adamant in their support of her, and soon a teetering relationship turns into a battle of the sexes. With or Without You was the first feature film from writer and director G. Stubbs. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Personnel: Kenny Chesney (vocals, guitar); Don Potter (acoustic guitar); Brent Rowan (electric guitar); “Cowboy” Eddie Long, Paul Franklin (steel guitar); Joe Spivey (fiddle); Bobby Ogdin, Barry Beckett, Phil Naish (keyboards); Michael Rhodes (bass); Eddie Bayers (drums); Terry McMillan (percussion, harmonica); Mandy Barnett, Curtis “Mr. Harmony” Young, Dennis Wilson, John Wesley Ryles (background vocals).Pricipally recorded at Masterfonics, Nashville, Tennessee.Disdaining the power-ballad pop-rock style favored by many contemporary Nashville artists, this young cowpoke concentrates on straight-ahead, two-stepping honky-tonk numbers on his second album. Chesney has an earthy, unpretentious vocal style, and he likes to sing simple, direct songs. “Turn For The Worse” and “(Turn Out The Light And) Love Me Tonight” are powerful evidence of his way with a country footstomper, while the gentle, piano-based title track shows off his dynamic range. If you’re a fan of artists like Lee Roy Parnell and Shawn Camp (both of whose compositions appear here), you’re bound to appreciate the modern country sound of YOU AND ME.With his second album, All I Need to Know, Kenny Chesney began to make inroads onto the charts, a position he consolidated on its 1996 successor, Me and You. While he bears no songwriting credits here, these 11 tracks showcase a more fully rounded Chesney, where the rockers pack more punch and the ballads don’t seem quite as big and glossy. For instance, “When I Close My Eyes” is a great soft rock crossover, tuneful and easy but never forced and not dripping with sentiment. Not that he totally avoids sap here, either on the nostalgic hometown tune “Back Where I Come From” or the slow-dance title track, but he’s developed into an old pro in spinning this corn convincingly, and when that new trait is balanced by the crackerjack country-rockers that dominate this album — the opening one-two punch of “Back in My Arms Again” and “Ain’t That Love,” the superb “(Turn Out the Light And) Love Me Tonight” — it makes this his most entertaining record to date. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Recording information: 12/31/2003.Sometimes a band finds its career virtually on hold. The Proclaimers had enjoyed a couple of major hit albums and especially two very memorable hit singles in the 1980s, “Letter from America” and “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles),” but the hits dried up and the two identical twins Charlie and Craig Reid had carried on regardless, churning out their unique brand of guitar-based folk-rock with witty and clever lyrics. In fact, their previous three albums had all failed to reach the Top 60 in the album charts and only a belated compilation, The Best Of…, released in 2002, brought them briefly back to the Top 30. Then in 2007 their song “I’m Gonna Be” was chosen by the team behind the Comic Relief charity as the unofficial single (the official one being the Girls Aloud-Sugababes collaboration “Walk This Way”), and just like two years previously, it was the unofficial song that captured the public imagination and became the bigger hit, in fact reaching number one on the singles chart for three weeks in the spring. The Best Of… was quickly reissued and became their biggest album to date, and while the iron was hot, the twins released their seventh studio album, Life with You, which was produced by Steve Evans, who had previously worked with the Waterboys. The trademark Proclaimers sound was still there, including the finger-snapping opening title track, the staccato guitar that introduces “In Recognition,” and the thoughtful lyrics, discussing religion on “New Religion” and “If There’s a God.” There was also misogynistic gangsta rap rhyming and swearing on “Here It Comes Again,” and they didn’t forget their roots, producing a faithful cover of the Wreckless Eric song “Whole Wide World.” ~ Sharon Mawer

On this release, the base quartet augments its rock vernacular with keys, electronic performers, and strings on this most interesting release, as the musicians’ broad vernacular features a stylistic fusion of progressive rock, art rock, late-’60s psychedelia, urban folk, and so on. One of the sometimes-unusual characteristics of the band’s makeover has to do with Chris Warland’s understated vocals, whereas the group pursues dreamy riffs with the hard-edged dynamics of progressive rock icons King Crimson, Yes, and other products of the early ’70s. At times, the group morphs their sound with a distinct sense of Americana, with odd-metered time signatures and blaring guitar parts, while also perpetuating pleasingly melodic choruses. On pieces such as “Barefoot Hymn (Bluebird Reader),” guitarist Nathaniel Braddock’s crunch chords provide a noticeable contrast to Warland’s whispery but slightly out-of-key vocals. Nonetheless, they elicit a vibe and sound that covers a lot of musical terrain. And with all of the humdrum rock ensembles flooding the scene, this outfit stands tall among its peers. Hence, a comprehensively entertaining listening experience from a consortium of musicians who are not content with parroting the tried and true. ~ Glenn Astarita

Personnel: Norman Blake (vocals, acoustic & Hawaiian guitars, fiddle, dobro); Nancy Blake (vocals, acoustic guitar, cello, mandolin).Engineers: Jim Emrich (tracks 1-3, 5-9, 12-14); Bill Lumaye (tracks 4, 10-11).Recorded at Cedarhouse Studios, Arrington, Tennessee on June 9-12, 1994 and Windstar Studios, Colorado Springs, Colorado in August 1992.WHILE PASSING ALONG THIS WAY was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album.Following his highly prolific relationship with Rounder Records, multi-instrumentalist Norman Blake found an equally congenial home for his music at Shanachie. The first fruits of this new partnership were four collaborative albums with his wife, Nancy, all of which earned the duo Grammy nominations for Best Traditional Folk Album. A pair of folk music faithfuls, Norman and Nancy Blake balance the traditional material they love with original compositions in the old-timey vein on While Passing Along This Way. The Blakes cover a wide spectrum of traditional styles and themes from “He’s Passing This Way,” a hymn that recalls the Stanley Brothers and “Sweet Freedom” with its echoes of the Carter Family, to the bluegrass-tinged “Sweet Heaven” and the fiddle showcase “Old Mother Flanagan.” Nancy Blake’s harmony work and acoustic guitar playing mesh expertly with her husband’s. For the most part her voice remains well in the background, but it’s plainly obvious, listening to material like “The Grave of Bonaparte” and “Old Stepstone,” how much it is enriching this music. The couple’s two guitars sound like one instrument on the graceful, finger-picked instrumental medley “Bonaparte Crossing the Rhine/Going Down the Valley.” Adept at a number of string instruments, Norman Blake sticks largely to guitar, though he’s also in fine form on fiddle, dobro, and mandolin. These are expert musicians who, through their loyalty to this rich tradition, have done a great deal to keep its spirit alive. ~ Nathan Bush

This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.Jawbreaker: Blake Schwarzenbach (vocals, guitar); Chris Bauermeister (bass); Adam Pfahler (drums). After a trio of underground classics built a fanatical fanbase and a critical buzz, Jawbreaker hit the majors with its 1996 debut (and ultimately swan song) on Geffen Records. While shunned by many of the Cali band’s hardcore fans at the time–the melodies were purer pop, Blake Schwarzenbach’s affected accent more pronounced-DEAR YOU would go on to be cited as one of the forefathers of the ’00s brand of emo.Its re-evaluation is overwhelmingly deserved; DEAR YOU contains some of the sharpest, most psychotically searing lyrics the soon-to-be English professor Schwarzenbach ever composed. While opening track “Save Your Generation” is a tad preachy and obvious, the neurotically sinister “Accident Prone,” the ultimate love/hate song “Fireman,” and the Christopher Walken-sampling stalker-y “Jet Black” more than make up for it. Perhaps the best moment comes near the end on “Bad Scene, Everyone’s Fault,” where in pure first-wave punk style, Schwarzenbach excoriates a 1990s hipster party tableau.

The cheeky bookends of You Will Go to the Moon, their latest collection, are “Michigan Militia” with MC 900 Ft. Jesus-goes-Fr?vous stylings, and the a cappella title track. “Get in the Car” condenses an entire afternoon of taking in the autumn changes along country roads into two-and-a-half minutes. Wurlitzer and theremin dress up their version of “I’ve Gotta Get a Message to You.” This’ll remind you of the pre-soul/disco sound of the Bee Gees but without interrupting the flow of mostly acoustic, many-voiced gems. Duke Ellington identified two kinds of music, good and bad. Serious fans of music in any way will place this Moxy Fr?vous album in the “good” category. ~ Tom Schulte

What You Need

What You Need

$12.99

Side Effect reached its creative peak with the Wayne Henderson-produced What You Need, which was the group’s second album as well as its best one. This time, the songs weren’t simply decent — they were excellent, and Side Effect had a gem of a female vocalist to help bring them to life. The quartet’s new female singer was Helen Lowe, who had replaced Sylvia Nabors. While Nabors was competent, the brassy, big-voiced Lowe was a treasure — and she shows herself to be major asset on the hit “S.O.S.” and a remake of Ronnie Laws’ “Always There,” which was originally a soul-jazz instrumental in 1975 but becomes a gutsy vocal tune thanks to added lyrics by Paul Allen. Equally strong are the funky “Honky Tonk Scat,” the mournful ballad “Changes,” and a cover of the Crusaders’ “Keep That Same Old Feeling.” Regrettably, What You Need was Lowe’s only album with Side Effect, and it’s equally regrettable that she didn’t go on to become huge as a solo artist. ~ Alex Henderson

Why You Running (EP)

Why You Running (EP)

$10.98

On her 2007 debut, Lissie’s songwriting sometimes struggled to keep up with her voice. The two share more equal footing throughout Why You Runnin’, a five-song EP that mixes Americana, folk, and Southern balladry into swirling patterns. Recorded in her adopted hometown of Ojai, CA — one of the few places in the world to have a “pink moment” at sunset, where rose-colored light splashes across the Topatopa Mountains — the songs are indebted to the stunning geography that inspired them, and Lissie uses her vocals to conjure up landscapes of rivers, prairieland, and heartache. She’s a fantastic singer, blessed with enough power to rival a pop vocalist but more aligned with folk sirens like Neko Case and Patty Griffin. On “Wedding Bells,” she tweaks an old Hank Williams song by adding minor chords, handclaps, and thickly stacked harmonies, while the piano ballad “Oh Mississippi” (produced by Ed Harcourt, no stranger to piano ballads himself) finds her serenading the river that bordered her childhood home. Why You Runnin’ may only be an EP — one can only hope Lissie has enough slow-smoked melody in her arsenal to sustain an entire album — but it’s one of 2009′s finest folk releases regardless. ~ Andrew Leahey

John Cazale’s resume as a film actor isn’t long, but it’s distinguished. Cazale appeared in five feature films, and each one received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture, while three of them — The Godfather, The Godfather Part II and The Deer Hunter — won the category. Al Pacino, who made three films with Cazale, considered him one his finest acting partners, and many film buffs cite Cazale as one of the best actors of his generation. But Cazale was thirty-seven years old before making his film debut after distinguishing himself in the New York theater community, and shortly after completing work on The Deer Hunter, cancer claimed his life in the spring of 1978. I Knew It Was You: Rediscovering John Cazale is a short documentary celebrating the life and art of Cazale, featuring clips from his memorable performances and interviews with friends, colleagues and fans, including Meryl Streep (who was also Cazale’s wife), Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Gene Hackman, Francis Ford Coppola, Sidney Lumet, Steve Buscemi, Philip Seymour Hoffman and many others. I Knew It Was You was an official selection at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

You See Me Laughin' -

You See Me Laughin’ -

$14.99

In 1991, Matthew Johnson was an on-and-off college student who in his spare time wrote record reviews for Living Blues magazine. Johnson liked the raw, primitive sound of rural Mississippi blues, but was disappointed that so little of it was being committed to record; after discovering a juke joint in Holly Springs, MS, where proprietor Junior Kimbrough and his friend R.L. Burnside played raucous, electrified country blues til the break of dawn, Johnson decided the music should be committed to tape. Using 400 dollars left over from a student loan, Johnson started Fat Possum Records, and began recording deep Southern blues artists such as Kimbrough, Burnside, T-Model Ford, Cedell Davis, and Johnny Farmer while struggling to bring their music to a broader audience, pay their artists and keep the business afloat. You See Me Laughin’ is a documentary which offers a look at Johnson and partner Bruce Watson’s ongoing mission to capture this music before it’s too late, and more importantly profiles the musicians who record for his label, exploring the wild and often violent lives that inform their work and fuel their often wary relationship with Johnson and Watson. Featuring rare live footage of Burnside and Kimbrough on-stage, You See Me Laughin’ was the first feature film from director Mandy Stein. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I Hate Everything But You

I Hate Everything But You

$15.99

A simply enormous affair by Rick Berlin and the Shelley Winters Project, I Hate Everything But You is their 2002 release named after the final track on Berlin’s 1982 CBS-distributed album, Berlin Airlift. This sparkling hour’s-worth of music produced by the band, along with Neighborhoods guitarist David Minehan, is a very special reinvention for the Boston-based singer: it’s a combination of what the previous six-song EP by Shelley Winters Project was exploring, blended with the undressed escapades initiated on Berlin’s solo LP, Live at Jacques, his singer/songwriter disc. At close to 59 minutes, it is not only the most band music ever released at once by the singer who fronted Orchestra Luna in the ’70s, it is also the most powerful. “Hate” is the new title for “I Hate Everything But You,” and the song rocks harder than Bill Pfordresher’s thin production recorded in 1982 ever allowed it to. The new version borrows that riveting intro from the Atlantics’ 1980 classic “Lonely Hearts,” and gives Berlin the opportunity to take one of his big titles from the past and give it a splendid update. Berlin Airlift was a great band that evolved out of the original Orchestra Luna, but that was a different place and time, and the musicians had to contend with all sorts of production and legal issues. Here, now, the seasoned studio and stage veteran composes a collection of definitive statements without major label distractions: “Somebody” has charging electric blasts from horn and string arranger Dave Berndt, while Meredith Cooper’s violin glides alongside the lead vocal. It’s also interesting how Rick Berlin’s keyboards are the core of which the thick vocals and deep instrumentation surround and embrace, while remaining an integral part of the web, but not its dominant sound. “Taxi, Take Me Home” works a lament into the mix, as does “Tired,” with its heavy percussion playing nicely off the string sounds Cooper provides, but it’s “Xmas Face” that immediately jumps out at the listener with all the mood of the Beatles’ driving pop allure, and one of the CD’s highlights. Fans of John Cale will totally understand “Only One of You,” both lyrically and vocally, while “Bad Day” has the band sweeping through the speakers and providing the icing for the singer’s descriptive poetry. “Monk”‘s originality is precious — riffs from yesteryear swell up to be part of something very new. This Shelley Winters Project material is striking in its solidity. These musicians respect Berlin and put their talents in all the right places: they’re all over the map, but only when the time is right, and the music is nice and dense, and worth playing loud. Berlin controls his powerful voice here, and unlike some of Orchestra Luna and Berlin Airlift music, where the ideas were overplayed and too studied, this stuff boasts a focus. The album is 14-songs deep, but they work so well, and Berlin’s vision is delivered with such an intensity. It is his, and Shelley Winters Project, most impressi

Are You Happy Now?

Are You Happy Now?

$22.99

Having already broken down some barriers with her own fusion of punk, R&B, and rock, J-Pop wunderkind Aya Kamiki’s third album Are You Happy Now? continues her signature blend of pop infused with punk sensibilities. This is J-Pop if Avril Lavigne (in her more mature form) had been writing it. Where it differs from a straightforward Lavigne, though, is in two main spots — first, Kamiki’s voice is more powerful, and flexible. She moves around the notes with a surprising dexterity, belting out the heavier choruses while slinking a little more on the ballads. She can turn notes in a manner reminiscent of Yoko Kanno’s Ghost in the Shell vocals, alternating styles rapidly and keeping a high level of emotive ability in the more powerful portions as easily as the lighter ones. The second difference with Lavigne’s style is the overarching influences of J-Pop embedded into the album. Kamiki is of course a Japanese pop artist, and such influences should be par for the course. However, her music tends toward a more American rock format for the most part, with only tinges of the overwrought guitar-stomp common in Japanese power pop and the sudden flat notes that tend to accompany the occasional English lyric. Surprisingly good music, breaking out of the shell of idol singing that’s so common with young Japanese singers. ~ Adam Greenberg

Broken Social Scene: Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, Jason Collett, Andrew Whiteman, Charles Spearin, John Crossingham, Emily Haines, Evan Cranley, James Shaw, Leslie Feist, Justin Peroff.Nothing less than an indie-rock milestone, this is what happens when a number of musicians from the Canadian post-rock scene (including members of Godspeed You Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. Zion, and Do Make Say Think) abandon their extended-jam conceptualizing in favor of short, optimistic, pop-oriented songs. Things start out in a jazzy, bass-heavy space before morphing into “KC Accidental,” a guitar-layered track that sounds like the Allman Brothers covering Sonic Youth’s “Teenage Riot.” Catchy hooks triplicate alongside hand clapping, fuzz guitar, and Brendan Canning’s whispered vocals on “Stars and Sons,” while the mellow, acoustic “Looks Just Like the Sun” gives way to the twangy neo-Tropicalia and cockeyed (but uplifting and cohesive) experimentalism of “Pacific Theme.”Emily Haines (of the Metrics) lends a vocal to “Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl,” which ends in a roundelay of swirling violins and banjo. “Cause = Time” is an even more tuneful brother to “Stars and Sons” that’s so good, by the time the mournful, gorgeous “Lover’s Spit” comes up one might be too satisfied to appreciate its obscene levels of craftsmanship. For a band with so many members, Broken Social Scene creates a remarkably spacious and well-orchestrated atmosphere on YOU FORGOT IT IN PEOPLE.
