Some tips to wrap your gifts
An important feature of presents is their package: wrapping, indeed, is a presentation of the gift itself, and when we make a present to someone, we would like to make a good impressions even before the gift is unwrapped. In this sense the wide choice of boxes, packets and wrapping paper that you can find on the market are certainly a big help to wrap your gifts in an original and impressive way, but if you make a little effort you can create nice packets also with your own hands, following some tips and using your imagination.
On the one hand it is true that you should not judge a book by its cover or look a gift horse in the mouth; on the other hand, in the case of gifts we cannot deny that wrapping is an essential feature, as it can make a present even more special. This is true especially in certain cases, for example when we buy a present to a child, but in any case a nice wrapping works like a sort of “captatio benevolentiae” in the mind of the receiver, who becomes more favorably-inclined towards the contents of the packet if s/he gets a good impression from the wrapping. To have an evidence of this you only need to think about the moment when you receive a gift: one of the best thing is unwrapping it, and if the gift is non unwrapped you do not appreciate it in the same way, do you? And have you ever received a gift wrapped with a creased wrapping paper or in a bad way and you got disappointed by that, even if the gift itself is not as bad as that?
To avoid this, you can use many tricks and types of wrappings. You can find many nice little boxes, for example: colored, decorated and realized with different materials, you can also embellish them with bows or something like that. This is the perfect casing if you have to wrap small, irregularly shaped objects, which might be difficult to wrap with paper.
If the objects you need to wrap are irregularly shaped but also big, and you cannot find a box with the right shape and size, you can wrap them with a very light paper, like tissue-paper. In this case, indeed, the wrapping paper that you usually use might not be able to model itself to the object because of its rigidity. Another solution is using organza bags or bags realized with other materials, which you can close with a ribbon.
Last tip: if you have to wrap a present for a child, the most important feature of the wrapping is the color. Choose bright and vivid colors and paper with the images of animals or cartoons characters. When a child receives a gift, indeed, the first thing that s/he notices is the color of the packet, as well as its size.
These are only a few tips, but if you follow them you can be sure to “dress” your gifts in the best way.

Generous melodies abound, rising from a gospel-derived groundwork, spun around street-tinged jazz rhythms, and enlivened by wonderful touches of humor like the Dixie frills of “Big Black Buck” that underscore an otherwise valuable criticism of consumerist society. And lest Donnie be dismissed as an imitator (a studied, well-versed disciple clearly, yes, but certainly not a clone), he explores a wealth of his own refreshingly original ideas, stretching out with genuine invention (the gorgeous cosmic explorations of “Heaven Sent,” the jittery electronic backdrop of “Masterplan”) as often as he reaches backwards into retro styles (invigorating bossa nova on “Do You Know?,” the romantic, Baroque string arrangement of “Turn Around”). Wrap Your Arms Around Me $12.99 Mike Chapman’s production of ABBA’s Agnetha Faltskog gave birth to the Top 30 hit “Can’t Shake Loose,” which charted in the autumn of 1983. Though it’s a good song, it is not as memorable as Phil Collins’ production of ABBA cohort Frida, whose “I Know There’s Something Going On” went Top 15 eight months earlier. That Russ Ballard composed both hits for both exiled ABBA woman is worth noting. Truly the gals couldn’t “shake loose” or supersede the fame they found in ABBA, and that’s a pity as the music here, from the innovative first track, “The Heat Is On” (not the Glenn Frey tune from two years later), to “Shame,” is all radio friendly and so much more refined than a lot of the dreck the major labels were issuing at the time. If anything the album covers as much stylistically as it can within the format that this singer was identified with. “Stay” would be perfect for Celine Dion as would “To Love” on side two, and that both Agnetha and Frida didn’t become as well-known individually as Laura Branigan or even Debbie Gibson says something about the unkindness of the music industry. “Once Burned, Twice Shy” is grown-up girl group, taking a theme Ian Hunter worked and creating an irresistible mini-pop masterpiece. This album is not only fun, it has much depth. “Mr. Persuasion” is a throwback to Lesley Gore/Patty Duke/Shelley Fabares days. Tiffany eat your heart out. The title track, “Wrap Your Arms Around Me,” is some strange mixture of 1973′s “Love’s Theme” by the Love Unlimited Orchestra morphing into 1978′s “Love Is in the Air” by John Paul Young. The second Russ Ballard contribution, “I Wish Tonight Would Last for Ever,” on the other hand, is a nice about-face, like much of this record, shifting tempos and ideas, a departure from the formula of Bj?rn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson’s hit machine that was ABBA. Chapman’s production work is appropriate and solid, the album feeling much like a similar Polygram release from around this time, Robin Gibb’s How Old Are You? — another member of a hugely successful group stepping out of the safety zone to create a dance-pop album of substance. At 46 and a half minutes, Wrap Your Arms Around Me is a healthy serving of charming melodies, Agnetha even penning a decent song she calls “Man.” “Stand by My Side” concludes the disc in ABBA fashion, the only tune emulating the band she came from. American Experience: The Massachusetts 54th Colored Infantry - $14.99 Originally telecast on the award-winning PBS series The American Experience, this documentary chronicles the formation and battlefield heroics of the first all-black Union regiment, the Massachusetts 54th Colored Infantry. Early in the Civil War, most whites thought that blacks would never be able to fight in the disciplined manner of the U.S. Army. But as Union casualties mounted, President Lincoln realized that the country would need every able-bodied man they could muster. As noted in this program, once the Emancipation Proclamation was signed at the start of 1863, recruiting of black soldiers began, and they answered the call enthusiastically. Led by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, the 26-year old scion of a white abolitionist family in Boston, the 54th stormed the Confederate Fort Wagner in a bold attack that generated heavy casualties, but galvanized Northern admiration for black soldiers and spurred enlistment. Highlights of this documentary include archival daguerreotypes, tintypes, lithographs, and commentary by various historians. Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes/Wine Colored Roses $15.99 BGO’s 2011 two-fer pairs George Jones’ 1985 album Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes with its 1986 sequel, Wine Colored Roses, two albums that arrived just as Possum’s popularity was beginning to downshift into a lower gear. George mourns the twilight of the country titans on the title track of Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes, implicitly acknowledging his place among them, and although his lament has lost its power over the years — almost every one of the singers name-checked in the song wound up having at least two other decades added to their career — the album as a whole has a burnished sunset quality to it, Jones and producer Billy Sherrill quite clearly touching upon past glories, always looking upon the past with rose-tinted glasses. Even the album’s obligatory novelty, “A Whole Lot of Trouble for You,” is a laundry list of brands from the past, its parade of products sitting quite comfortably with “The One I Loved Back Then (The Corvette Song)” or “If Only You’d Love Me Again.” There’s a skillful blend of ballads and honky tonk, spiked with just a little bit of Nashville corn, but Sherrill’s clean, contemporary production, tastefully dressed with echoes and synths, winds up sounding older and fussier than George himself, keeping the album somewhat at a distance even if its best moments have lots of life, whether it’s sorrowful or joyful. Wine Colored Roses is cut from the same cloth as Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes but it has a distinctly different feel. Billy Sherrill has peeled back some of the slicker, poppier elements of his ’80s productions — these still surface toward the end of the LP, with “If Only Your Eyes Could Lie” easing along like a country crossover Alabama could have sung and synths sprucing up “These Old Eyes Have Seen It All” — leaving the album feeling a bit purer than its predecessor. It is by no means sprightly, with only the novelty “The Very Best of Me” boasting a tempo approaching a trot, but this is a comfortable setting for George, and he sings expertly, his surroundings never masking his gossamer phrases. Everything is in place for a fine album, apart from the material: there are a couple of songs that hook in the mind, like “If Only Your Eyes Could Lie” and “The Right Left Hand,” but most of the album is merely competent, pleasing only on a generic level. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine |
